Join us on a winter campervan adventure through the heart of Japan! We’re driving from Nagoya up to the historic village of Shirakawago and the beautiful town of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture.
From hunting down the best A5 Wagyu Ramen in Nagoya to DIY fake food crafting in Gujo Hachiman, this trip was full of surprises (and a few lessons learned about parking a 2.8m tall campervan!).
📍 HIGHLIGHTS & LOCATIONS:
Nagoya Food Hunt: Queuing for the famous A5 Wagyu Ramen at Ramen Shishimaru [00:16] and exploring the Osu Shopping Street.
Gujo Hachiman: A visit to the “Water City.” We tried our hand at making DIY food wax samples [07:17] and fed the massive koi in the local canals [21:56].
Shirakawago: Exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site. We took the observatory shuttle [32:31] for that iconic view of the gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
Takayama Shopping: Parking the campervan at Frespo Takayama to hit up Uniqlo and ABC Mart [41:22].
🚐 CAMPERVAN TIPS:
Parking in Small Towns: Be careful in Gujo Hachiman! The streets are narrow and private parking is strictly enforced. We share our “police encounter” story so you can avoid the same mistake [16:13].
Shirakawago Parking: For March 2026, use the designated parking lot across the suspension bridge [31:02]. Do not attempt to drive up to the observatory!
Winter Driving: Check out our stop at a snow resort to see the driving conditions [25:18].
💡 TRAVELER TIPS:
Cash is King: Many shops in Shirakawago and the traditional districts still prefer cash—make sure to have enough on hand [37:07].
Early Starts: Arrive at Shirakawago by 8:30 AM to beat the tour bus crowds and catch the first shuttle to the viewpoint at 9:00 AM.
