Celebrating KHMER NEW YEAR at SIEM REAP SANKRANTA!

Join us as we celebrate our first KHMER NEW YEAR! We are in Siem Reap, Cambodia celebrating Khmer New Year 2024, and attending the 4-day Siem Reap Sankranta celebrations.

We were deciding between attending Khmer New Year/Sankranta in Cambodia, or Songkran in Thailand, but ultimately opted to attend Siem Reap Sankranta celebrations, and we are so glad we did!

Khmer New Year, or Cambodian New Year, is the celebration of the solar new year in Cambodia, coinciding with similar celebrations in Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and many other Asian countries!

This video is the third day of the festival, April 15th. We head to the Royal Independence Gardens to check out the live music and activities. Plus, we wander along the Siem Reap River to see the various activities taking place there, and finish our day watching a leather water puppet show on the river.

We hope you enjoy watching us immerse ourselves in the Khmer New Year celebrations in Siem Reap!

    Thailand promotes Thai culture until it is famous all over the world, such as Thai costumes, Songkran, Loi Krathong, Muay Thai, Thai food, until the foreigners come to visit Thailand is number one in the world. The Cambodia thought of claiming Thai culture as their own. Thinking that if foreigners understand that Thai culture belongs to Cambodia. It will make foreigners come to visit Cambodia instead Thailand and Cambodia will have a lot of income coming into Cambodia. For example, Water festivals in Cambodia has been called “Chol Chanam Thmey “ for a long time, but Cambodia just changed the name Chol Chanam Thmey to the name of Songkran like Thailand in 2023. and about costume ever since past to 2018 real traditional costume of Cambodia is Sompot Dress after Cambodian watch Buppasanivas Drama Thai in 2018, Cambodia changed Sompot to Thai Dress and said Thai dress belong to Cambodia, Thai copy Cambodia

    I only went to Cambodia around five to ten times only, and I'm Khmer/Cambodian, plus, I don't think I experienced a special something at Cambodia at all. The only thing I remember is riding a elephant at a ancient temple and riding at the back of my grandma's motorcycle to the post office, getting free toffee, and getting a tub of ice cream at a supermarket. 😛
