We are sixty days into our journey across Japan, and we just found our favorite place on earth. Welcome to Toyooka.

Toyooka is a town with a massive heart, the best strawberries in the country, and a local grill that puts high-end city restaurants to shame. To really see a place like this, you have to slow down. We traded the trains for bicycles and headed into the countryside – past family farms and ancient canals that haven’t changed for generations. No city noise, no crowds; just the wind in the trees and the “pure heart” of Japan.

From picking “red gems” at a local strawberry farm run by the kindest elderly lady, to a “leg-burner” hike for cherry blossom views, Toyooka reminded us why we fell in love with this country. We ended our day at a local Izakaya recommended by our homestay owner—where the marbling of the meat was world-class, but the atmosphere felt like a family dinner at home.

When you’re on the road as long as we are, you expect beautiful views, but you don’t always expect to find a place that feels like home.
