I’m coming to Hikone Station. This time, from here we will visit Hikone Castle, one of the 100 most famous castles in Japan. Now, let’s check the route on the map. This is the current location, the west exit of Hikone Station. And this is Hikone Castle our destination. It takes about 15 minutes on foot from the station. Let’s go straight away. Shiga Prefecture Gokoku Shrine Remains of the outer moat of Hikone Castle 【Iroha pine】 【Ii Naosuke’s Poetry Monument】 Hikone Castle was built in 1622 by Ii Naotsugu. Naotsugu’s father, Naomasa, was one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa and the first lord of the Hikone clan. Construction of Hikone Castle began after Naomasa’s death and took approximately 20 years to complete. The construction of the castle was carried out as part of the national construction project led by the shogunate. Additionally, building materials were reused from demolished castles such as Otsu Castle and Sawayama Castle. From then on, it functioned as the residence of the Ii clan until the Meiji era. A part of Sawaguchi Tamon Yagura has been maintained as a memorial hall for the opening of Japan. You can get stamps and castle seals here. It’s a stable. This is the only castle in Japan where you can see an existing stable. 【Eight Views of Lake Biwa: Hikone Castle Monument】 Cross Omotemon Bridge. Let’s take a look at the guide map. Hikone Castle is a hirayama castle built on Mt. Konkiyama (Mt. Hikone). The territory is a renkaku style. You can get to the Honmaru from the Omotemon Gate, but this time we will take a detour and head to the Honmaru from the Otemon Gate. Proceed through Kane no Maru, Honmaru, and Nishinomaru, then visit Genkyuen and the museum. I’m walking towards the Otemon gate. Beyond the inner moat, you can see the hachimaki stone wall and koshimaki stone wall of Kanenomaru. Otemon Bridge came into view. I’m going up the main road. It’s a one-way street like Komakiyama Castle and Azuchi Castle. Also, the height and width of the stone steps are not constant, making it difficult to climb up. It is a crank-shaped entrance. The stone wall of the tower base is made of otoshi-zumi stones on the left. And on the right is a different stacking method called gobou-zumi. To the left of the store is the bell kane-no-maru. Was there a bell tower at this slightly higher place? Looks like the view is nice. Let’s cross the rouka-bashi and enter Tenbin Yagura. 【Sawayama Castle Ruins】 The hourly bell was here. The castle tower can be seen from the Taikomon gate. 【Taikomon turret】 Now, we have finally arrived at the castle tower. First, let’s take a look at the stone wall of the castle tower and the decoration of the building. Hikone Castle’s castle tower uses a variety of decorations, including plover gables, gambrel gables, kara gables, and flower head windows. Enter the castle tower. There is a gap that is difficult to see from the outside. The stairs are very steep and difficult to climb and descend. This is the view from the castle tower. You can also enter inside the Taikomon turret. A high railing is attached. When you go outside, you can see Lake Biwa. Move to Nishi-no-maru. I’ll put this inside too. Move to Genkyuen. A high stone wall is visible. It looks like Ruins of gate. There was a well-kuruwa ahead of us, and high stone walls were built in front and behind it to protect it. This is Genkyuen. This angle overlooking the castle tower across the pond is a popular photo spot. You can’t cross this bridge. “Do not cross this bridge!?” You can cross this bridge. Hikone Castle Museum. There is also a garden inside the building. Hikonyan appears at the Omote-goten! 【Umoregi-no-ya】 Hikone City Hall. Go up to the observation space. You can see a panoramic view of Hikone Castle from here. You can also see Lake Biwa. So that’s all for this video. Thank you for watching until the end. See you again in another city. Please subscribe to the channel, Like, and Super Thanks!
