Every year in January and February, the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is held. Alongside the Sapporo Snow Festival, it is one of Hokkaido’s popular winter events. The Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival celebrated its 46th year in 2024. At the venue, numerous objects made using the waters of Lake Shikotsu are displayed. During the day, you can enjoy the naturally created color known as “Lake Shikotsu Blue.” The water of Lake Shikotsu has few impurities, allowing only the blue wavelength of light to pass through, making the ice blue. Ice sculptures making begins in November with the construction of frameworks. Once the frameworks are completed, Lake Shikotsu’s water is sprayed with sprinklers to create the ice sculptures. The Ice Festival’s nighttime illumination is also a highlight. The ice sculptures, illuminated by colorful lights, create a fantastical atmosphere, which is different from the daytime’s Lake Shikotsu Blue. The illumination can be enjoyed from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM during the festival period. During this time, the area around Lake Shikotsu can drop to around -10°C at night, so dress warmly. This year, ice sculptures are smaller than before. Here is the Monument Fire where you can roast and eat marshmallows. It was not allowed to enter inside the day I visited because the ice started melting due to the warm, which is very unusual this time of year, but the light shining through the ice and the white birch trees were still creating a fantastical atmosphere. Near the blue tower in front, there is a snow tunnel, which was off-limits, Hope there will be many people passing through the tunnel next year.
