ペーチ市を訪れるべき理由 | ハンガリー旅行ガイド

If you’re looking for other cities
to visit in Hungary besides Budapest, then this video may give you some inspiration
because we are going for this weekend all the way to southern Hungary to visit a city that’s full
of history, culture, and it is also home to one of the most important families of our cultural
heritage and our art world. So, let’s take the train and go all the way to the wonderful city of
Pécs. Pécs is the fifth largest city of Hungary, located close to the southern borders and it’s
about a 3-hour train ride away from Budapest. Welcome to the city of Pécs. Now, if you are
interested in what the train ride was like and how you can get tickets to the domestic trains,
then we will talk about that at the end of this video and we will also show you the hotel that
we have booked for our stay here. But for now, let’s cut to tomorrow and let’s start exploring
Pécs. Yay. Good morning. The plan for today is to first start exploring the inner city, go to some
of the sites, and also grab some food, some coffee especially, and then later on we will go and visit
the Zsolnay part of the city. That’s the family I mentioned about. Let’s go start exploring.
Learn some fun facts and history of page. So today we will start with visiting one of
the most iconic buildings of the city. That behind me is a Christian church. But it
doesn’t look like one now, does it? Well, it looks more like a mosque. And that is not a
surprise. Pécs has a very very long history and during a period Hungary was attacked by the
Ottoman Empire and part of Hungary was under Ottoman occupation and when Pécs the city was
attacked. It was completely destroyed down to the ground. Nothing was left here and the new
city was erected with lots of structures that are more prominent in the Ottoman Empire. You
would find mosques and other kind of Turkish bops in other cities of that empire. And this
city was completely rebuilt to be one of its main cities of the empire. And that’s why
we have this mosque here. But after Hungary took back its territories, this remained. We did
not destroy it and it became a Christian church. By the way, as you walk the streets of Pécs, you
might see these palm tree kind of things. It feels like we are in the Mediterranean, more like in
Italy. Well, we are so south in Hungary that we are almost also at the exact same latitude as
Italy is, which is also one of the reasons why a nearby village here called Vine is very famous for
their wine, their red wines, which is something that the Italians are very good at, but we are
also very good at those. And if you’re wondering what that place, Van is like, we have a video
about it. So, check it out. Maybe if you come to Pécs, you would also consider visiting Van as
well. Now, Pécs lies on the slopes of the Mecsek Mountains, which also gives us an opportunity to
climb a little bit cuz there’s a little chapel nearby from where hopefully we can get a nice view
of the city itself and our next destination, too. So, we finally made it to the top of the Calvary
Hill and from here we get this gorgeous view of Page. But let’s talk about the name of Page.
What does it mean? Does it have a meaning? Well, there is no real clear answer. However, there
may be a few clues because the German name of this city is Fken and that actually comes
from a very old Latin name. As I have said, Pécs has a very very long history. Even during
the Roman Empire’s times, there was already a settlement here. Based on some records, this place
was known as Quinque Ecclesiae. It’s Latin. I don’t know if I’m pronouncing it correctly, but
apparently it could also mean five churches, five basilas, five temples. During some
excavations, five churches, five ruins of five temples have indeed been found. Now, what
does that have anything to do with pitch? Well, perhaps if we look at Slavic languages and how
you count, five sounds like eight. Maybe that’s the reason how over centuries the name of this
city turned into P. And we’re actually very close to other Slavic countries, Croatia, Serbia.
So there is definitely a Slavic influence in the name of this city. Now, Pitch is not only
home to lots of gorgeous looking buildings, but it is also home to one of the most
famous artists when it comes to optical art, opart. Victor Vasarelli was born here. He was
Hungarian before he immigrated to France where he perfected his art. And actually, you can
find over here a museum about his life if you want to learn more about the art of Victor
Vasarelli. and of course his life as well. Now, many cities throughout the world
have something called the love locks. And as you can see, there’s quite a few
love locks here as well. Now, to be fair, I’m not a huge fan of any of this. However,
here there’s at least a dedicated spot where for a very very long time now, as you can
see, people have been leaving their locks as a symbol of their foreverlasting love.
And this is something that I kind of more can appreciate versus when you kind of put
locks on bridges or other buildings just because you want to showcase your love. This is
pretty spectacular, the amount, I have to say. Now, as I have mentioned on top of the Calvary
Hill, this place dates back to Roman times, precisely the time when in the Roman
Empire, Christianity started to became more prominent. And here you can
find a early Christian Necropolis, which is also part of the UNESCO World
Heritage list. You can find some tombs, some burial sites and moseliums. And you can
visit some of these. And these sites are part of the biggest cemetery from Roman times
that you can find today outside of Italy. So next we will check out the great basilica
of Pécs which is also one of the most iconic structures of the city. However, first here’s
a little bit of a fun fact. I already mentioned that the original Latin name of the city used to
be Quinque Ecclesiae. However, that’s not truly the original original name. During Roman times,
they actually took over the name that was kind of referring to the place that the old Celtic people
who used to live here even before the Romans used, which kind of was referring to marshlands in their
own Celtic language. And so is not really a word that we can easily say out loud, but fun fact in
Hungary, one of the most popular tobacco brands or cigarette boxes used to be Sopianae, which
is really difficult to say out loud. So all of us Hungarians always went into the shop and
asked for a packet of Szofi cuz it’s more easy to pronounce it. It was the average worker man’s
cigarette. But do note cigarettes and smoking is bad for you. So this is just a fun fact. Don’t
go and start buying boxes of Sopianae if you visit Hungary. Nevertheless, let’s go and check
out the basilica. The Saints Peter and Paul’s Cathedral Basilica stands stall in Page as sort
of an architectural time capsule. Its roots go all the way back to the 11th century, but it’s
been rebuilt so many times that you can observe signs of many architectural styles from history
just within this one building like Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and many more. Thanks to all
the upgrades and extensions over its long history, it’s one of the most unique-l lookinging
religious buildings in Hungary today that’s unlike any other. One of those unique features is
its four towers, which is a very rare feature as most other religious buildings will have
one or two towers. And if you’re up to a bit of a physical challenge, you can climb the
stairs leading to the top of one of the towers. And from there, you can get an excellent
perspective of the city surrounding you. Now, the insides of this basilica was really
extraordinarily gorgeous. I really enjoy some of these details that you can find in churches
like these. But now I’m getting a little bit hungry and also my caffeine levels are dropping.
And thankfully with our tickets, we actually get a discount at a nearby cafe. So, let’s try
to get some coffee, maybe some snack as well. with the beautiful view. M. There’s a little bit of
Hungarian sausage in here, which is one of the reasons why I chose this.
But there’s also some sort of a salad dressing, which gives it a little bit of acidity. It
makes a good pair, I have to say. Really nice, refreshing, but also a little bit
spicy from this nice sausage. Okay. Now, as you watch this video, you see that Pécs
is full of history and culture. But it wasn’t always like that. During the socialist times,
this was actually a center for industry. Even the local soccer team was bearing the name the
Pachi Miners Sports Club, the Pachi Bas because mining was really dominant here. They’ve been
mining all kinds of coal, even uranium. And there is a part of the city which was built during
that particular time and it’s called Uranos, uranium city. Now it’s not radioactive but the
people who were working in the mines used to live there. However, in the 2000s all the mining
has stopped here and basically pa needed another kind of way to make it appealing for people to
move here and they chose science and intellectual industries. Even the local university is really
really famous because it’s the first university that they have ever created here in Hungary
and it’s still operational and it’s one of the largest universities. Today you may have seen
that this city is a little bit more peaceful. But yesterday when we arrived here it was full
of people. There was such a lively vibe here. lots of young people possibly because this
today is a very popular university city. As you explore Pitch, you will find many
remains and structures from the Ottoman Empire’s era. Like for instance, these are the ruins
of a Turkish bath. Not too far from here, there’s also a mosque. And Pécs actually has
the most structures and ruins from these times. And that’s not a surprise because when Hungary
took back Pécs, they did not destroy it. The Hungarian troops tried to fight for it, tried to
take it, and instead of completely demolishing it, they wanted to use it as headquarters for their
further conquest to push the Ottomans out. And because of this move, which was strategically
important, thanks to that, it’s also historically important because today we can enjoy lots of these
very unique lookinging buildings here in Pécs. And now that we have explored most of the inner
city, we will take the bus to go a little bit further outside of the city because there is the
district of Zsolnay. It’s because of the famous family was named Zsolnay. It’s where you can find
the famous factory. And today we can visit it, check out some museums, and learn more about this
fantastic family of Hungarian heritage. Let’s go. So now we have arrived to the cultural quarters.
This used to be the old factory site of the Jeai family who are very famous for creating
architectural ceramics and china wear. Now they were a truly truly family-owned business
and familyrun business. They were so dedicated to their crops that they were actually living
here on the site of the factory. You can also visit their old house here. But if you come
here, I would highly recommend visiting the Judi Collection Museum. There you can get an
idea of why they are very important for our cultural heritage. Now the Jean family already
became really famous for their arts and crafts in the 19th century. But the real breakthrough
was when they figured out how to make ain, which is a glazing technique for ceramics.
It was something that a lot of people tried to figure out how they can do it. In very old
times, there were people who could do this, but it was a forgotten technique. However, they
were the first ones who could revive this very unique glazing technique. You can see in some of
their arts and some of their products where the colors have this weird metallic kind of coloring
on them and it’s a very unique thing to that’s how they have been one of the most outstanding
China wear and ceramics makers of Hungary. Now in one of our earlier videos which was about
what kind of souvenirs we recommend for all of you to buy if you come to Hungary. Porcelain and China
wear ceramics was one of those things especially from but Hungary is so famous for porcelain we
actually have three different companies who make unique China wear. Yes, one of them, but the other
one is Herendi. And we also have Hulu Hazi. Now, Jean, I think makes a little bit more of
an artsy different kinds of China wear, while Herendi is more famous for their hand
painted artwork. And Hulu has if you’re looking for something more classical type of China wear.
But nevertheless, you don’t need to come all the way to Pitch if you want to get yourself somehow
wear. You can also find them in Budapest if you visit the capital of Hungary. Now, as I have
mentioned, Zsolnay is also famous for their architectural ceramics. And if you walk around the
city of Pitch, you’ll notice lots of buildings use their porcelain and ceramics, especially the
tiles, the roofs have porcelain on them. And also in Budapest, many prominent buildings also
use products. Like for example the Matias church, the grand market hall. So if you look carefully,
you will notice all the other kinds of buildings in Budapest that also use products cuz they are
really, really different and really colorful. Look at all the lions. And now that we have explored most of what we
wanted to see here in the cultural quarters, we’re going to head back home, refresh a little
bit, and then go out and we’ll show you what the evening here in Pitch is like and what we’re
going to eat. But first, as I have promised at the beginning of this video, we’re going to
talk a little bit about how you can get here, how you can book your domestic train tickets, what
it is like to be on the train, and also what our hotel is like. So, let’s talk about that. Now,
welcome to the intercity train between Budapest and Beach. Now, this is an intercity because it is
only stopping at some of the major train stations. So if you want to cover longer distances then this
is probably the quickest option. For instance to get to page it takes about almost 3 hours from
Budapest. Now we are currently in a firstass carriage which is not like a very luxurious
first class. However it is more spacious and a little bit nicer than the standard secondass
carriages that we have here on these trains. It is actually a really good option even though
there are just a handful of seats available. But if you can plan ahead, you can also grab some
tickets for the first class as well. And I can highly recommend doing so. Now, if you want to
buy tickets, you can do so online on.mmouth.au. And I know that’s a mouthful, so you’ll have a
link down in the description to find it. And if you register on the website, you can also use an
app on your phone where you can have your tickets in a digital way. No need to print out anything
and no need to carry like a laptop or whatsoever with the digital tickets. Now, it’s important
to note that if you are 65 years or older, then you can ride the public transport
and the trains here in Hungary for free, but it’s also important that these are special
trains. You don’t need to pay for the distance, but you do have to pay for a seat reservation.
But if you do purchase on the website and you enter your birthday, the ticket prices and
everything will be automatically set. So that’s also very cool to know. So hopefully now
you are more convinced that using the trains is a good option to explore Hungary and you’ll
see more places here and visit more cities, not just Budapest. Welcome to our room here at the
Palatinos Boutique Hotel right in the center of beach. This is a really, really welldesigned hotel
room. I really like the colors and everything is really spacious. The bed we spent here two nights.
For me, it was okay. For my lovely producer, it was a little bit too stiff, but I think
it was fine. We also have a balcony, which is kind of redundant because you’re looking at
the neighbors and also we are on the first floor, meaning that if people go into the courtyard
to have a smoke, you can kind of feel that. So we were not sitting on the balcony itself.
Now another thing that I do want to note is if we come to the bathroom, this is a very nice and
spacious bathroom. However, I was wondering where is the hair dryer. Normally it could be right
here somewhere here anywhere. Cannot find it. I was literally sitting on the toilet wondering
about where could it be when I found out that this is like an Indiana Jones adventure because
it is hidden away right there. Now, to be honest, this is kind of a pricey hotel cuz one night is
more than €100. However, we cannot be at a better location. We are right in the center of Pécs.
As we walk out from here, we see the magnificent main square with the mosque, one of the icons
of Pécs. So, all in all, we had a lovely time, not just here in the city, but also staying at
this hotel. So, I can highly recommend considering staying here at the Palatinos Boutique Hotel if
you come to Pitch. And now I’m hungry. Let’s go find something to eat and then just casually hang
around in the city during the evening. Let’s go. Spicy from the That’s why I like it. Tender meat.
Perfect. By just the way I like it. Hey, hey, hey. By the way, this nice looking building here
behind me, this is a secondary school. And it’s special because my lovely producers’s mom
used to come here when she was in secondary school. And I know she would appreciate
highlighting this nice little building. Well, it was a lot of fun coming back to Pécs
after all of these years and also super exciting to show it to you guys finally so that now you
can see what a wonderful city this one is. And hopefully now you are inspired to visit beach
and perhaps also other cities here in Hungary. And if you want to see what else you can see here
besides Budapest, then maybe check out some of our other videos. And if you don’t want to miss out on
our future content, then definitely subscribe to the channel. Thank you so much for watching

  1. Thank you for telling us about Pécs. It looks lovely! I will visit next Spring 🌷

  2. I just did Visegrad today and the Train went through there. Maybe tomorrow if it doesn't rain

  3. Hi Akos. Thanks for the tip, I will definitely visit next time I visit Budapest. I would just like to know how much time it will take to visit everything and enjoy it. Thanks for the great video and information. Greetings from the Czech Republic.

  4. I'll be in Budapest in three weeks again and i'm realy looking forward to it.
Your Videos already helped me the first time in Budapest a lot. Pecs will definitly be on my list next time

  5. How's the cafe culture? Asking as a digital nomad, so looking for places I can work on my laptop. Budapest was great for that. Gyor, not so much but just about doable.

  6. Adding this city to my list in Hungary. Thank You for sharing!

    Beautiful City!

One more thing, was breakfast included in your hotel stay or was it a separate bill?

  8. Is Herend and Hollohazy ceramics still available to buy? And are they still popular? I know they were very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. My mom had loads of them!!! But now, no one seems interested in them anymore.

  9. I was here last year on my trip to Hungary (btw I found your channel while planning that trip, thanks for all the info), and this is such a cool town, I felt like I could have easily stayed an extra day or two. Lots of history, beautiful art and since it's not too big, most of it is in walking distance. More people that visit Hungary should try to visit more cities than just Budapest.
