While other markets open at 6:00 a.m. Senju’s market opens at 4:00 a.m. “He who looks for five-grain vegetables or river fish…” “are becoming more prosperous by the day.” Senju Kawaramachi, Adachi-ku, Tokyo Date of establishment unknown It is assumed that the history of the Senju market goes back to the birth of the market, as it was the town guardian of the Senju Yado’s produce market (commonly known as “Yaccha-ba”). Senju Aomono-Market was founded in 1576 and was one of the three major markets in Edo along with Kanda and Komagome. Around two o’clock in the early morning, shippers enter the market with their carts along Midosuji Street, which is quiet and still. After unloading their cargo at the wholesaler, the shippers take a nap on the second floor of the wholesaler until 4:00 a.m., when the auction begins. Meanwhile, the buyers, the grocers, also arrive by cart. The carts are driven into the yard of a store called a teahouse at the back of the market. The teahouses take care of the carts and help with the loading and unloading of the goods, and there were about ten of them in Kawaramachi. The greengrocers and teahouses were contracted on a monthly basis, and as of the end of the Taisho era (1912-1926), the contract was 3 yen per cart per month. The number of people using these teahouses was said to have exceeded 500, so the sound of the carts must have been considerable. Fukurokuju, a deity enshrined in the Senju Seven Lucky Gods Tour, is also enshrined here. Next time, we will introduce Nakamachi Hikawa Shrine, a 6-minute walk from Kawaramachi Inari Shrine.
