【箱根湯本】駅から歩ける名店10選|グルメとスイーツを一気に満喫

Hello, this is Yuzu’s Travel & Eats. 🕊️ Today, we’re taking a stroll around the area near Hakone-Yumoto Station. A town full of hot spring charm and nostalgic streetscapes. We’ll explore easy-to-enjoy local bites while walking through Hakone’s vibrant streets. This time, we’ll be visiting 10 spots—all within walking distance from the station. Even the farthest location is just about a 5-minute walk one way. We’ll guide you along a loop route, starting from the station and circling through the shopping street. From sweets to savory bites and cozy cafés—
it’s a casual food walk where you can sample a little at a time. Now then, let’s start our tour of the local spots. Our first stop is just outside the Onsen-gai exit of Hakone-Yumoto Station. Wagashi Nanohana is known for its dedication to crafting sweets with carefully selected ingredients. This time, we tried the freshly steamed “Hakone no Otsukisama.” It’s made with premium ingredients—
Hateruma brown sugar, Okinawa sea salt (Nuchimaasu), and Tokachi red beans. Each piece is steamed for 20 minutes to bring out the full flavor of the ingredients. Soft and chewy, with a gentle sweetness that highlights the quality of the ingredients. A perfect treat to start your Hakone stroll with a little moment of sweetness. Operated by Tokuzōmaru, a seafood shop from Izu Inatori—
this specialty store offers simmered fish, dried seafood, and more. It also serves great grab-and-go options perfect for strolling.
Their top seller is the umami-rich grilled abalone skewer. Heated on the spot and served hot right in front of you. Another favorite is the grilled rice ball,
made with simmered kinmedai (golden-eye snapper). Each bite is infused with the rich flavor of the simmering sauce. Perfect not just as a souvenir—
but for savoring right there, a taste of the sea in Hakone. Along Sakura Street, you’ll find Fukuya, a traditional Japanese sweets shop. It’s a sister brand of Nanohana, the popular store introduced earlier. Their specialty is fresh Kuzuryu Mochi, handmade in the in-store workshop—
but this time… We went for the Melt-in-Your-Mouth Mont Blanc Soft Cream. Freshly piped chestnut cream, finished right at the storefront. Smooth, rich, and full of chestnut flavor. Made with Japanese chestnuts from Ashigara and Kumamoto,
the cream is as delicate as threads. Its light, melt-in-your-mouth texture is the highlight. A perfect sweet break during your stroll. There’s even a small paid footbath beside the shop—ideal for a quick rest. The inviting aroma of freshly piped chestnut might just make you stop in your tracks. This long-standing shop has been part of Hakone for over 75 years. It’s been recognized as a Kanagawa Prefecture Specialty and named among Tabelog’s Top 100. Their signature treat is Yumochi—soft and delicately crafted. Made with premium Japanese glutinous rice and sweet bean jelly. We decided to try just one for now. A gentle yuzu aroma unfolds with each bite,
matched by a subtle sweetness. It melts like a dream—
offering a soft, comforting sweetness that lingers. At the storefront, we even met their mascot Yumotan,
born from the Yumochi itself. A lovely Japanese sweet to enjoy along your Hakone stroll. Just a 4-minute walk from the station—
this shop sits quietly beyond the bustling shopping street. The sound and aroma of grilling make you stop in your tracks. Their hamburg skewers are grilled over charcoal to order,
and the freshly seared aroma is irresistible. More than a snack—it holds its own as a main dish. Packed with the deep flavor of Hakone pork in every bite. Charcoal-grilled rice balls,
topped with their signature grilled eel—rich and flavorful. The smoky aroma and freshly made warmth
make it a welcome treat on your journey. Next, we head to Hojo Sanfuku Dango. This good-luck dango shop expresses wishes for three blessings—great fortune, happiness, and prosperity. The rich, savory sauce and chewy rice dumplings make a perfect match. As a symbolic gesture to “cut off hardships and welcome blessings,”
they actually cut the skewer before serving. Even a single skewer is quite satisfying. Soft and flavorful to the very last bite—never too much, never too little. This kamaboko workshop is run by Kagosei, a long-established shop from Odawara with over 200 years of history. It’s a live-cooking style store where they fry the fish cakes right in front of you. Perfect for snacking on the go, their items come on handy sticks. Today, we’re trying their two most popular items: the Onion Stick (No.1) and Mentaiko Mayo Stick (No.2). The Onion Stick features sweet onions that pair beautifully with the mild fish paste—simple, yet addictive. The Mentaiko Mayo Stick combines spicy cod roe and rich mayo—a match made in heaven. Enjoying freshly fried treats like this is one of the joys of traveling. Located just steps from Hakone-Yumoto Station, this tiramisu specialty shop is perfect for a quick stop during your journey. The shop’s name, Te-eramisu, is a play on words meaning “illuminating Hakone.” The shop is “illuminated” by three charming gentlemen—each inspired by historical figures who contributed to the development of Hakone. The rich, milky cream and fragrant cocoa combine to create a flavor just like tiramisu in soft-serve form. Topped with “Eiichi,” a character inspired by Eiichi Shibusawa! From flavor to packaging, this was a sweet that truly lit up the moment—with both charm and delight. As you stroll through the shopping street, you’re drawn in by a sweet, toasty aroma.
Kikugawa Shoten’s specialty is the Kasutera-yaki Hakone Manju. These soft cakes are filled with gently sweet white bean paste—simple yet satisfying. Enjoy them fresh off the griddle, or take home a boxed set as a souvenir. At the storefront, you’ll see the rhythmic motion of the automatic baking machine—
a long-standing scene that feels like a symbol of Hakone itself. This cozy sweetness makes you want to pause and take a moment.
Why not enjoy one on your next Hakone stroll? Lastly, here’s a calming café you’ll want to stop by when your feet need a break. Just a one-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station, it quietly stands behind the shopping street. The name “Timuny.” reflects a wish to offer a “one-of-a-kind relaxing time.” Their signature drink is specialty coffee made with Sarutahiko beans. Each cup is brewed with care using a cloth filter, delivering a smooth, clean taste with no bitterness. The warm wooden interior offers a peaceful moment during your travels. Their food is also popular—the grilled cheese sandwich is crispy on the outside, melty inside. The sweet and tangy honey mustard perfectly complements the richness of the cheese. The bread comes from “Ayapan,” a beloved local bakery. With local ingredients and thoughtful preparation, it’s a meal that elevates your journey. Other drink options include bold ginger ale and refreshing lemonade—both highly recommended. A quiet reset for the mind, in the midst of a busy trip. How was this walking food tour around Hakone-Yumoto? We hope you’ve discovered a few spots to visit on your next weekend outing.
