There are lots of iguanas here. It’s the breeding season and this male is doing his best to impress the females. Here comes another one thinking about musling in on the territory. This is a turkey vulture on the side of the river. You see a lot of these soaring around the skies throughout Costa Rica. And let’s not forget our friend the tree frog. They spend most of the day asleep and they’re excellently camouflaged under broad green leaves.
Tortuguero in Costa Rica is a great place to start or end your trip and Mawamba Lodge is a great place to stay. It’s on the Caribbean coast in the rainforest and the wildlife is spectacular.

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. The rainforests and cloudforests contain many rare species of flora and fauna. It is an especially good destination to see birds as well as animals, insects and a huge diversity of plants.
This video shows what you can expect if you travel to Costa Rica in January, which is in the dry season – though you’re still likely to get caught out with the tropical rain showers!
From July to October, thousands of green turtles come to Tortuguero beach to lay their eggs. It’s one of the biggest turtle nesting areas in the Caribbean.
This video was shot in January though, so no sea turtles around at this time of year.
