NOVA PETRÓPOLIS – RS: Conhecemos a Alemanha do Brasil
In this video, we’ll introduce you to a city inspired by Germany, but located in Brazil. It’s popularly known as Jardim da Serra Gaúcha. There’s a place to eat strawberries straight from the tree, a lookout point with a spectacular view of the Serra Gaúcha valleys and mountains, and even a restaurant serving a selection of Dutch dishes. We also took advantage of this day to visit the largest waterfall we’ve ever seen, which has become one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been. Come with us to discover Nova Petrópolis. [Music] And today we begin another adventure here on the channel. We’re in Gramado, right, staying there, but we left and wanted to do some tours around the surrounding area. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do them all because of the weather, but we’re doing everything we can, right? So, today we came here to Farropilha to visit Salto Ventoso Park, a park with a beautiful waterfall that’s going viral on social media. And here there are several activities like ziplining, quad biking, and tree climbing. Since the weather is quite rainy, we won’t be doing those others, but we came to see the waterfall. Here at the park, admission is R$20, and it’s open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guys, I always get embarrassed in places that have these figures like that to represent. I swore, I said with great conviction, “Go there, love.” I asked him for directions. Then I got closer and saw it was a figure. You guys… This happens to you too. And we walk along the trail. Then there’s an opening, and we can already see the waterfall. Guys, how beautiful. It’s strong, you know? It’s powerful. I haven’t been to the ones in Foz do Iguaçu yet, have I? The famous falls there. But does it remind you a little? It’s strong, just a little intense, okay? A little. It probably doesn’t. I think this one is weak compared to the ones there. But it’s very beautiful here. But it’s cold, people. It’s really cold today. You see, you’re all bundled up. Here I am, look, pulling on my sweater. I’m almost going to make it a glove, but it’s really beautiful. [Music] And this one here is the famous “leap of wind.” I said it was viral, but it’s not. It’s pretty empty here, and it’s much further away, grassy, right? Most people probably don’t do this hike, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s really beautiful. It’s scary, but it’s beautiful. [Music] And we leave there like this, look. Completely soaked. Don’t come dressed. Come with a raincoat. I mean, come dressed, but come with a raincoat. Even an umbrella won’t help because the water hits the rock and rises up, not from above. So come with a raincoat. No. Or a waterproof coat, right? No, but you have to worry about that, right? If you don’t mind living there. Yeah, if you don’t mind if it’s hot, it’s normal. In the park, there’s a restaurant that serves steak. Right here on the road, a little before arriving at the park from Farropilha, there’s a viewpoint where we can see the waterfall head-on. We were down there, now we’re up here and can see the viewpoint. This viewpoint is free; the park has an entrance fee. [Music] And now, look. We’re leaving the park for our next destination. And look, I’ll give you some tips from when I researched this tour. I didn’t know about it yet. Importantly, as Gabriel mentioned, we get really wet. We’re soaking wet here, guys. Look, my hair looks like I just got out of the shower. Yeah, if you don’t want to bring waterproof clothing or don’t have one, bring another change of clothes too, because there’s a bathroom, so you can take the opportunity to change there. And thank goodness I had shorts here. I’ve already changed them, at least we have them. Since it’s cold, I’m wearing layers here. I’m wearing another shirt, maybe I’ll take it off at the next destination. And that’s it, you really do get wet, so don’t underestimate the strength of the water at the waterfall; it gets quite wet. I don’t know if it’s because there’s been a lot of rain in the last few days and it’s more intense. Maybe at other times it’s a little weaker and not so soft, but today I get quite wet. And another tip is that as you walk along that walkway, right, at the waterfall, it’s for those who like to take photos and film, just like us, your cell phone is practically… wet. So be careful with your phone too, so it doesn’t get wet if it’s not a water-resistant phone. And then what do you do? You move away, right? Have the person positioned at those angles closest to the waterfall. And if you’re taking the picture with your phone, move away, because otherwise, first the lens will be covered in water droplets, you won’t be able to see anything. I’ll go later, if I have any shots here from the ones we took, you’ll see. The photos look like they’re underwater, covered in droplets. And then that’s it, you move away and the person stands close by, and then the photos will be nice. [Music] Now, we’ve arrived at our destination for the day, right? We’re in Nova Petrópolis. Uh-huh. Doing it here. It’s a really cool trip, especially for those who are in the Gramado area but want to explore something more. There you go. Perfect trip for a day trip. You spend the day here in this region. You’ll see throughout the video that there are lots of cool things to do here. It’s 20 minutes to half an hour from downtown Iriamado. It’s really close, especially if you’re already near the end. And it’s a destination well worth the trip. If you visit the parks we showed in the Lamado video, like Aquion, they’re a little before the halfway point here. They’re quite far from downtown Gramado. So you’ll pass them, continue a little, and you’ll arrive here. You go through a toll booth, right? It costs 7.10 or 7.40. The E is very quiet, the road is very quiet. Although it rained the other days, it was fine; there were no speeding up, widening, or anything like that. And for those who watched our Gramado video, you saw that it rained a lot the days we were there, and we were lucky; today here in Nova Petrópolis, it’s sunny. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the sun, and the day is beautiful; it looks like it’s going to get even brighter. It’s really nice. So, I think we’ll be able to see a lot of tourist attractions here. [Music] And our first stop here, look, was at Zandan, which is very focused on Dutch cuisine. We stopped here to get to know its theme a little, which has really cool architecture, and we’re still deciding where we’re going to have lunch, where we’re going to have our meal of the day, but initially, the atmosphere here is really cool, really cool. Even if you don’t stop here for lunch, you can go in and take some photos to get to know the space. It’s totally worth it. It’s cool that they give you the ticket on a little passport-style paper. [Music] [Music] Now we’re here at the covered street in Nova Petrópolis. It’s a little different. Gramado is a shopping mall, right? Here it’s more like a little market. Then we go by and there are several handicrafts right on the street. Sweets. Really cool. Yeah, there’s a sweet one over there. Let’s go check it out. It looks like they have a lot of homemade sweets. Look. Levarante. Look, pasta sweets. Coconut candy. Maltine egg. Look at this, guys. There are so many different sweets, like truffle bonbons, so many things. Kitcat brigadeiros, so many different things. How cool. And here we are, look, homemade sweets. Let’s see if they’re any good, shall we, love? Yum. Guys, I’ve never seen such a variety of homemade sweets in one store. Did you like it? Mine is really good. Gabriel ordered choquita. I got one with Maltine egg. Let’s see. The paper doesn’t die paper. Well, very sweet, but it’s delicious. [Music] Look. And right here near the square, where the covered market is, we have a maze that ‘s another tourist attraction here, and the mission is to get through it. So let’s go. Ouch! I missed the exit. We hit the wall again. Back, back, back. And here’s a bathroom in the little square below, next to the labyrinth. And this square here where the labyrinth is located is the flower square. It’s famous in the spring. It’s all colorful, and it’s perfectly colorful. We’re not in the first one, so we can’t see it like that, but even so, it’s very [Music] and these are the first impressions we’re having here, right, love? What are the ones you just said you thought? We have to get to know it a little better, but it looks like Gramado, only calmer. Yeah, less chaotic. And it has more of a city feel too, there’s not so much… It has that unique architecture, reminiscent of Europe, but there are some more specific points. It’s not all over the street, right? Like Borja de Medeiros. Absolutely everything. Yeah, but it’s really nice. I found it more peaceful. The sidewalks are the same style, the street is everything, but here people don’t stop for you to cross the street, no. Be careful. Yeah. And one cool thing I feel is it has the same sense of safety as Gramado, right? Like, we’re walking around here with our cell phones, recording, so it’s also a very peaceful area for those who want to stroll, I think you’ll really enjoy it. Look, this street already reminds me a little more of the architecture, like Gramado there, look. Those more European houses, look. Very charming too, beautiful, guys. And here there’s also a very famous gallery called Sangdor. There are several shops inside it, and it’s really cool for those who like taking pictures. There are those famous umbrellas in the sky, and the architecture here is also really cool, so you should put it on your itinerary, stop here and come see it. It’s worth it. Several stores sell clothing, gifts, crafts, and cosmetics. I heard there was a shop here selling cuckoo clocks. We just found it. It’s right here in the Z. Look how cool it is. Then when the time comes, I wonder if anyone here will do it now. How do we get around? There are several shops along the street, especially like this, for warm clothes for people who want to shop. Hey, there are many outlets here. Since it’s a little further away from Gramado, I think you can even find some warm clothes at a slightly more affordable price. There’s also a little market selling tights and scarves, right there near that covered market, they also had some clothing options for sale. So, here’s another option. This one behind me is the immigrant gallery. It’s just a mall, but it’s a traditional photo spot here because of its architecture, right? And the streets here are really beautiful, guys. It really reminds us of European architecture. We walk around like this, it’s surprising, right, love? It’s really nice here. Really nice, really cozy. We’re really enjoying getting to know this area here. Now I like it here more than Granada. What’s up? Seriously? Seriously. Why? I don’t know. It’s great. After walking around the city enjoying the tranquility of the place, we went to see the Aldeia do Imigrante park, which tells the story of German colonization in the region. The seat is short, so we paid for a special option where he takes us on a short tour of the park, but in an electric cart, so we can get to know the park faster and have time to see the rest of R. [Music] [Music] There are also pedal boats here, but we don’t really care for pedal boats. So we’re just stuck in the park. Really cool, really beautiful here. I’m back with more time to enjoy and stay longer. I came with time, right? To spend the day, right? [Music] And here’s the historic village, which is part of the park, which tells the story of German immigration to Nova Petrópolis. Gu was explaining to us that all the buildings here were reproduced exactly like the original village in the countryside of Nova Petrópolis. Of course, they’re not the same houses, but they made a more or less faithful reproduction to tell what it was like. It’s really cool, right? Quite a European-style village, even when you compare it, right? There’s the little chapel there, a café there, the houses around there, there’s a center there that’s the village cooperative. Really cool. [Music] Here in the park, you can dress up, take an old-fashioned photo there. The water part is also traditional, right? Next to the church is the cemetery of the first pastors , and here’s also the cafeteria, right, which would be the village store. Let’s go and try some traditional sweets, shall we? Let’s see if there’s anything tasty for us to take. Look, some different things. Look, several types of viral shorts. How cool. I thought Cuca was just banana, but there are cucas in many flavors. Pineapple, grape, and coconut. The slice there has a twist, it has… I thought cuca was just banana. There are many flavors. What is cuca? So cuca is a bread-like dough with… A lighthouse and so on. Hmm. Look. There are several cakes here, savory ones too, several little cookies. Look how cool. How cute. These ones here. Really cool. For those who want to take home as a souvenir, this one is filled with dulce de leche. Several different types. Oh, look. How cool. Kids love it. And here’s also a cozy little space. It’s like grandma’s little house here. Really cool with this view, guys. Seriously, you teleport in a place like this. It’s like you’re somewhere. Look how cool. Look here, Cuca is so traditional that they even sell toast, like real toast. Look at this, guys. I thought it was very different. I swore Cuca was just a banana cake, but no. Look, there are so many flavors. This one is made with, I think, cream cheese. Grape tiramisu. This one is made with chocolate, apple, banana, blackberry, guava, dulce de leche, orange, and even dulce de leche with peanuts. Wow! And we decided to choose the grape one to try. Guys, it’s good, you know? It’s very moist. The grape galley they put in. It looks like this, some chunky and some doughy. Nice doughy. Mmm. Very good. You tasted it until this morning, right? Mmm. Which one is tastier? I don’t know. They’re both good. I didn’t try it at the hotel. I’ll try it. Try it. Tasty. Very good, right? Different. Mmm. And it’s not too sweet. I didn’t find it too sweet, especially because the jelly is a bit tart, so it’s quite balanced. It’s balanced, very tasty. Good. Worth trying. Now I want to try the other flavors. Did you see they had tiramisu? Wow, so many different flavors. Good. Let’s go check out the museum, shall we? The Municipal Historical Museum. A little wind-up mouse, like a toy. How cool. Right there are the clothes they apparently wore back then, even at the Zandã restaurant. And the waiters, right? The waitresses were wearing traditional clothes. Look how cool. But walking, what is it? It’s Dutch. And here, what is it? German. It doesn’t seem like it. It’s because I get confused. I speak Brazilian, I get confused here. But look how cool. Different, bro. Butter churn. Have you seen that before? Have you seen that before? No. Any typical food here? It’s typical German. It’s very strong German cuisine. Can you film it? Yes. Oh, yes. It’s because we have a channel, we give travel tips. Wow, there’s Pierog here. Hi. Pierog. Is that around here? Is it football? It’s not a, it’s a kind of savory. It’s pasta, right? Yeah, but now I don’t think it’s a, it’s the cranial, right? Yeah, you live here? I live here. Yeah. And what’s it like here? Is it quieter here than Gramado, or is it peaceful there? It’s too quiet. We found Gramado to be very busy. Yeah. Uh-huh. It’s quiet here. But there’s also a lot of accommodation here. It’s quite affordable, not even compared to… But it’s good to live here. A very calm, very peaceful city, except that at night, not many businesses are open, right? Even restaurants open until 2:30. 2:30, which is a hell of a time for lunch. I get it. You’ll find another place that has Alacart. But that Zandan was open. It’s the Zandan there. That’s like a Dutch one, right? Oh, yes, yes. They’re open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. That’s true. We wanted to go to a very typical one here, Colina Verde, but it’s already closed. Oh, Colina Verde is. Yeah, but we didn’t have time. It’s because we were still in Farropilha. We went to that one near Salto Ventoso. Oh, Solto Ventoso there. Yes. And are you guys going back to Gramada today? Very late. See? We could already live here. And what’s the weather like here? Does it usually rain a lot like Gramada or more? Yeah, it depends on the season, right? This is a rainy season there. And cold, right? Very cold. What do you think is the best time to come here as a tourist? Oh, in November, starting in November, summer, right? It’s already summer, right? It’s already a little warm there. It’s really nice. And then there’s the Christmas Lights in Gramado, right? Yes, yes. Right next to it. Yeah. And it’s also really close to Gramado. You can pop over there. Here. Nice. Thanks. [Music] [Music] And we couldn’t miss it, even with such a short time. We bought a stroller ride down there. It’s really worth it. I’ll come, I’ll come with time to see the park. It’s really cool. There’s a café with traditional things for you to eat. It’s really beautiful here. If you come in the spring, it must be crazy here. And now we’re moving on. We’re picking up the pace here because we really want to see some of the viewpoints they have around the region. A very famous viewpoint is the Tower Viewpoint, and another is what? The Eagle’s Nest. Yeah. So we’re rushing to see if we’ll have time to go there. But it’s a recommendation, maybe when you’re arriving, before you get here, you should stop by the Tower and the Eagle’s Nest. It’s really cool to watch the sunset. At least we saw some pictures, and it has a really cool view. So we’ll see if we’ll have time to see the Port of the Sun there, because we still have another tour before the lookout. Let’s see if we have time. Uh-huh. While we were also touring the park. Hey, it’s really cool that we ended up meeting the locals, right? We chatted a little with one of the staff, he took us on the tour. He was very friendly, very attentive, and told us a little about the park and also a little about the region. And it’s something I found really cool here in the South. The people are very welcoming and receptive, right, love? It’s loved , and so far, Nova Petrópolis. Yes, yes. It seems like the people are really prepared for tourism and are very, very receptive, very concerned, always asking if everything is okay, if everything is alright, if you need anything. Oh, the basics that many places end up lacking. So I really feel this care. Not to mention the friendliness. They’re very friendly. I thought, I had the impression that people in the South were a little colder, maybe. Yeah, I think so too, but maybe that’s from the other southern states, right? Yeah. Not from here, which isn’t a problem either, right? Each one’s own characteristic, but I thought it was cool. And these are so cool, look, you feel like you’re in a movie. Look here, look. Even the pharmacy here has this colonial style, guys. It’s very cute. I’m, I’m walking around the city, wanting to take pictures at every corner. And we arrived at the tower’s observation deck. I thought I wouldn’t have time, but I did. I wouldn’t have time to get there before dark. And right here, as soon as we arrive, there’s a restaurant, some little shops selling knitting. I was a little lost as to whether we were in the right place, but we were. You kind of pass the restaurant, then go down some stairs , and right there we’d see it. Look, there’s a lookout point, like, what’s that called? Yeah, it’s a deck, but that symbol there is a compass rose. It’s the compass rose. That’s the lookout point right there. Really cool. It’s a little busy today, since it’s the weekend, but I think during the week, like any tourist spot, it’s a little quieter. So let’s go up close and see a little of the view, which is already beautiful from up close. So it’s definitely going to be even more so. [Music] [Music] [Music] And our last stop was here, look, at the strawberry house. Here we can visit the strawberry harvest, folks. Here, look, fresh strawberries, without any preservatives. So, how does it work? Here we can pick them here. And then, look, they fill this little basket here. We fill this little basket, and what was equivalent is a little plastic wrap here. Today it’s worth R$30, but she explained to us that the price varies, right, depending on the strawberry season. So it could be less or it could be more. Today this little box is worth R$30 , and today there aren’t many strawberries either because of the rain. So she already has this little box ready. But we can also go here and have an adventure and see if we can find any strawberries. Then they give us this little basket, scissors, and we pick our own fresh strawberries. Mmm. Guys, very good. Here, look. Little red. This one is just right. Really? Perfect. Too perfect. Sweet. It’s not that super sour, you know? The ones we bought at the market. Very good. Mmm. I’m just drooling here, watching her eat strawberries. Try it. Very good. It’s cool that they also sell some desserts and strawberry sweets here. เฮ [Music] [Music]
[Music] The strawberry house is a little further away from downtown Nova Petrópolis, closer to Gramado. So, after visiting it, we headed back to downtown. On the way there, we made a quick stop at the Hillbrand sawmill, a historic local property where corn, wheat, and rye flour were made, as well as rice, barley, and barley hulls. There Peanut oil was also made from pumpkin seeds, which was used in lamps for lighting at the time. Today, the place operates as a restaurant. After exploring all of Nova Petrópolis—you know, everything we could see that afternoon—we returned here to Zandan for the traditional Dutch experience, which is a sequence of dishes they serve here, which they say are made the Dutch way. And look, how cool! The menu is made of wood, covered with this little house-shaped wood, and people come inside to enjoy themselves. I thought it was really funny. There’s a song playing. We’re studying it so it doesn’t show, right, so as not to take away our monetization, but there’s a Brazilian song playing, only they’re singing in Irish. What’s the song, honey? Cry, call me. That cry, call me. It’s really funny like the Dutch version, but it’s very themed, the whole atmosphere is really cool. Now I’m curious to know if the food is good, folks. If it’s good, you’ll see because here you can have it again. So, if we’re repeating it’s because the food is good. This sequence, the coolest thing is that we can eat as many times as we want. And there’s flamon, right, love? Dutch cheese. But something different. Let’s see. We almost want to leave, right? Go back to Gramado, but we don’t. For the experience to be more complete, we have to eat something typical here. So, we’re here. Let’s have lunch. [Music] They do this super unique presentation, right, of throwing fire right there in the filet mignon. In fact, I almost burned my finger here scooping up some sauce. But let’s see if it’s tasty. It’s beautiful. Let’s see if it’s tasty. No. And how does it smell, guys? Really? Go. It’s good, it’s well-served. And here come the sides too, look. Comes potatoes, some mashed potatoes here, I think it’s mashed potatoes with bacon, potatoes, then comes rice and farofa. It actually looks pretty good. Now let’s see the most important part. If it’s good. Try it, love. Try it and tell me your honest opinion on what you think. They say it’s a Dutch cheese, so they flambé it, then add something that makes it so hot you think you’re going to burn yourself, but it all works out in the end. Very good. It’s a must-try. Absolutely. The cheese isn’t strong. I thought it would be a melting cheese. No, not so much. Not so much. Very tasty. Probably. Although the dish is very tasty due to the amount of cheese, it’s also quite cloying. We liked the Dutch pie with ice cream, but we found it a bit sweet. In addition to the restaurant, Zandan also has a little shop with various Dutch chocolates and some homemade sweets. We’ll have to leave you with our opinion on these, because we ended up not taking any this time. And so we say goodbye to this beautiful city in the Serra Gaúcha region. Keep following the channel, as more trips will be coming soon, and until next time.
