ヴェゾン ラ ロメーヌ、南フランスのローマ遺跡が残る美しい街のマルシェと街歩き / プロヴァンス地方 / Vaison la Romaine, South of France
Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre Saisons. This time, I visited the town of Vaison la Romaine in southern France with my husband Matthieu in the end of May 2025. Every Tuesday morning, a market takes place in Vaison-la-Romaine. There is a lot to see here, so we must hurry around a bit, but let’s get started. Perhaps because many people live in houses with gardens in this area, the market sold a wide variety of plants, seeds, and seedlings. This market is very large. There were cooking utensils made from olive wood, so we decided to take a look. (Matthieu likes looking at things like that.) Matthieu didn’t find anything he liked. It’s nice. In late May, melons were already being sold in large quantities in Provence. The ones on the right are 4€ each, and the ones on the left are 3€ each. They’re the same Cavaillons melons, so what’s the difference? Maybe the size? The olive embroidery on the lavender petal sachets was very cute! The colourful patterns of the fabric are typical of southern France and really catch the eye! I was interested in the olive oil. I should have bought some. There were also Espelette peppers, a specialty of the Basque region! The ham looked delicious. They were too big, so I wish there had been a smaller size available. It looks delicious. There was a spatula that seemed like the size Matthieu would like. And in the end, he decided to buy this spatula. The shop was quite spacious and sold kitchenware made from olive wood as well as other items. This reminds me of something my grandmother used to have at her house, which was hung at the entrance to the room and called a ‘Noren’ in Japanese. I wonder if it’s used the same way in France. The basket bags with cats and dogs on them are cute too. This market is really big. I already want to come back. It’s impossible to see everything. The garlic is so big it looks like onions! I think this is purple garlic. There are lots of olive wood goods. How far does this market go? It’s really big! It’s amazing that it’s this big even on a Tuesday. It must be even more crowded in summer. It was a colourful lizard figurine, typical of southern France. I also love handmade accessories like these. I wish I could have looked around more slowly. Let’s go down the street on the left. There’s a Shiba Inu. He is so cute. We saw a lot of cute dogs at the Market! I found a dress with a very stylish design and print. I thought it was really nice, but it was only available in one size, and it looked a bit big, so I decided not to buy it this time. I found a shop that sells lots of herbal teas! It was tea for skin detoxification. This one is very popular. This one is supposed to be for dieting. I wonder if it really works? I was looking for a herbal tea that was easy to drink and had a nice aroma, rather than one with specific effects. Herbal teas for stress relief and relaxation. This one contains cassis, orange, fennel, star anise, cinnamon, citronella, and other ingredients. We decided to buy this one. It was 7 euros. This shop had many herbs with unusual appearances and shapes that I had never seen before. It was very popular and there were always customers. I would like to come back and shop here again someday. This street is very nice. There were several restaurants in the area, so I decided to come back here for lunch later. Even if the market wasn’t open, this would still be a lovely town. They were selling cherries! Three packs of Carpentras strawberries for 10 euros was a great deal. There was also a Shiba Inu here. They’re very popular in France too! I was considering buying three packs of strawberries. But I thought I couldn’t eat that much, so I decided to buy just one pack. This is so cute—is it a pot? It would look great as a decorative item in a room. We’ll look for a restaurant to have lunch at. Matthieu liked this restaurant, so we decided to go in. This is a beer made in Vaison-la-Romaine. He thought it’s a white beer. I ordered sparkling water. Cheers! Matthieu wondered if this was really white beer. This is an amuse-bouche. Olive paste, called tapenade, is spread on bread and eaten. It was difficult to put the tapenade on the bread while filming. It’s very delicious! The bread is garlic bread. Matthieu ordered a dish made with calf’s liver. Looks delicious! It’s been a long time since we have eaten liver. We feel like eating it sometimes! The potatoes were also very delicious, and he was very satisfied with this dish. I ordered a Caesar salad. In France, Caesar salad always comes with chicken, but how about in your country? It looks very delicious. But it was so filling that I was a little worried I wouldn’t be able to finish it all. (With Mathtieu’s help, I managed to finish it all!) This bistro has delicious food and isn’t too expensive, so if you ever have the chance to visit, I highly recommend it. After lunch, we took a stroll around the town. The market was quite empty after it closed. When we went down a different street, the market was still going on a little. This street is narrow, so I thought it might take a while to clean up because many cars couldn’t enter at once. The bridge ahead is very famous in this town. There was a sundial for sale at a souvenir shop. It’s lovely! This bridge is named the Roman Bridge, a very old bridge built in the Gallo-Roman era (BC). The river flowing underneath is the Ouvèze. There was a major flood in September 1992, but luckily this old bridge was not damaged and remains as it was. Let’s go to the other side. I’m not sure if it was because of the strong wind or because there were so many people passing by, but the bridge was swaying a little and it was a bit scary. Let’s take a look at the bridge from the outside. The bridge from the opposite side. On the hill we are about to go to, there is a town built around the 12th century, where you can visit a castle and a church. (the castle is currently under restoration and cannot be visited.
). We can see a strong wall on the upper left side. This hilltop town is fortified. There is a crepe shop. The fountain is running. The stones at the bottom and top of the tower with the bell tower in front are different. The lower part was built in the 14th century, and the bell tower part was built in the 18th century. This building is very beautiful. This street is Church Street, so there seems to be a church ahead. It’s always difficult to climb up for the church, so maybe they built a church in the lower town as well. To get to the castle, you have to climb this slope. It’s quite a challenging path. The church came into view. Since both the church and the cathedral have names, should I translate it as ‘cathedral church’? Cathedrals aren’t always big buildings, are they? It was supposed to open at 13:30, but the church was closed. Shortly after, a staff member came and opened the door for us. (The key was very large.) The admission fee was 1 euro per person. Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral Church was built in the mid-15th century, and the nave and choir were added at the end of the 16th century. Decorations were added until the end of the 18th century, but they gradually disappeared due to looting during the revolution, and in the 19th century, the residents moved to the valley, and the church fell into disuse. After restoration work, it now holds cultural events. The blue stained glass windows inside the church were created in 2019 by Korean artist Kim En Joong. There was also an exhibition of paintings inside the church, which were available for purchase. The church is usually closed, but it seems to be open for events such as exhibitions. The old town is located on high ground, and it was a windy day, so wind noise may be loud in the video. Please adjust the volume and enjoy the video. There were many people riding bicycles up this steep slope. There are no cats here. It is very inconvenient for residents not to be able to drive here. What a lovely house.
So peaceful in this area. There are no cats here either. What a cute house. There was a very nice café. Normally, cats would probably be sleeping around here. This town seems like it would be fun to explore for a whole day. This area has a similar atmosphere to Lourmarin. I imagine it must be tough for the restaurant staff here to carry vegetables and other items. Cars can pass through, but trucks might have a hard time. It’s beautiful. The descent was a bit slippery and scary. Although it was a short stay, it was a very enjoyable walk. We stayed in the old town for about 50 minutes and returned to the Roman bridge. This side, where the market was held earlier, is home to ancient ruins built by the Romans in the 1st century and modern streetscapes from the 19th century. I thought this street looks beautiful, so we decided to take a look. The road ended here, so I decided to go in a different direction. I returned to the area near the souvenir shop I visited earlier. We arrived at Vaison-la-romaine Tourist Information Centre. The Vaison-la-romaine Tourist Information Centre was quite large and surprising. The tourist information centre had a well-stocked souvenir corner. They also sold the same series of beer that Matthieu had been drinking for lunch. This wine was the same one we bought in Sablet, which I introduced on YouTube the other day. They also sold books and guidebooks. There seemed to be many people cycling, and there were many pamphlets with cycling routes. There were also standard postcards and magnets, which were fun to look at. This is the entrance to the ancient ruins called Puymin (Le site antique de Puymin). There is also an ancient theatre that can accommodate 5,000 people. There is also a museum where sculptures and everyday tools from 2,000 years ago are on display. (Admission is required from here on.) This silver statue is a work by Swiss artist Cesar Henao, who was born in Colombia, and is based on the 14th Roman Emperor Hadrian and his wife. It is made up of over 3,800 stainless steel tubes and was donated in 2024 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the town’s name change from Vaison to Vaison-la-Romaine. On the way to the cathedral, there was another ancient ruin, Villasse. It was the centre of the old Roman city.. The gate appears to be closed. The first discovery of these ruins dates back to the 18th century, when Roman mosaics were found, followed by the gradual excavation of an ancient theatre. We are approaching the cathedral. It is much larger than I expected. This Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth Cathedral was built in the 11th century on the site of an ancient Christian building and was rebuilt in the following century. Some of the Roman-era building blocks reused during construction remain. This is the tomb of St Quentin, who died in the 6th century, discovered during restoration work on the cathedral in 1950. This also appears to be part of a column from Roman times. We can enter the cloister through this door. The cloister, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, features arched openwork corridors supported by columns and capitals, and was once used as a residence for monks. We will now pass behind the cathedral and return to the car park. This time, we visited Vaison-la-romaine. The market in this town is very large, and there are so many places of interest in the town that I couldn’t see everything. I definitely want to visit again someday! We are going to Séguret now. See you! We have already posted a video of our visit to Séguret, so please take a look. Thank you for watching the video until the end. See you in the next video!
