Kilimanjaro Safaris (officially) opened with Disney’s Animal Kingdom on April 22, 1998. The whole safari is about 110 acres, so this one attraction is the size of Magic Kingdom. Even though there was the thrilling Countdown to Extinction (Dinosaur) ride on opening day, the safari was the headline attraction. Busch Gardens Tampa had a popular African plains area which opened in 1965, so in true Eisner fashion he built his own savanna so guests won’t leave Disney to go to Busch Gardens. The safari trucks travel on two miles of faux “dirt” road as riders bounce around and take pictures. The animal enclosures are hidden in the landscaping. When this video was recorded in 2003 the story of the safari (as seen on the queue TV) was to educate guests about poaching. The end of the ride was an exhilarating chase to save the elephant Little Red from poachers. Game warden Wilson Matua was our eyes in the skies with his passenger Miss Jobson. Little Red was removed around 2012 and new narration eliminated most of the poaching story.
In this 2003 video you will see…
0:06 Harambe. This fictional East African town is home to The Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Kilimanjaro Safaris offers photo tours of the savanna. Its entrance is next to a huge baobab tree. In 2003 the standby entrance was on the left, Fastpass distribution was in a hut in the middle, and the Fastpass return was to the right. Today, the Wild Africa Trek meets in the hut and the Lightning Lane is on the right. A sign at the entrance says: “Kilimanjaro Safaris ceases touring at 5:45 today.” Except for special nighttime safaris, the attraction doesn’t operate after dusk. Thirteen Zulu craftspeople from South Africa built the thatched huts. Imagineers used influences in countries like Kenya and Tanzania to design the decayed, water-stained buildings in Harambe. The name is a Swahili word meaning “let’s pull together.” Outside the safari a chalkboard is advertising “Harambe School” with the programs: “Environmental Travel Tips”, “Wildlife Lessons”, “The Story of Harambe Village”, and “Cultural Studies”. Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is advertised in the distance, which is now called Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
NOT SHOWN: Since I use the Fastpass queue, not shown in this video is the standby entrance which is a covered walkway with pictures of African animals and their Swahili names on the wooden frames above. Next, guests walk through a safari booking office, and if the queue is really long they loop around outside and come back in under the wooden walkway. After that they pass by an enclosure for the West African crowned crane and sacred ibis. This is the only live animal exhibit in the queue. After passing the birds, the standby queue in 2003 would move alongside Fastpass.
1:16 Fastpass queue. I enter the line from the Fastpass entrance and this queue is next to the standby commoners, separated by a single rope. Stroller parking is on the right. Signs overhead signify the left side is “STANDBY” and the right is “FASTPASS”. Another sign says: “Welcome to Harambe Wildlife Reserve”.
2:28 Bridge. I cross over a bridge and out the windows I can see the safari jeeps passing under. In the distance is the exit bridge. The window shutters used to move, and I would close them back in the day, but now they are bolted open. Signs in the bridge give the rules of behavior while on the safari. “No. 1: Wild animals always have the right of way.” “No. 3: Do not make excessive noise. This causes unnecessary stress to the animals and makes them flee from vehicles.” “No. 5: Never attempt to feed the animals. They are wild creatures with natural diets and should not be made dependent on handouts.” [I did not record No.2 and 4.] Leaving the bridge and back under the covered walkway is another sign stating a summary of safari rules.
4:00 Wilson Matua video. Overhead in the queue are TVs and ceiling fans. The TV starts playing a video from warden Wilson Matua. There is also a video from Miss Jobson talking about the animals on the safari, but I didn’t record that one. Wilson Matua, played by Abdoulaye N’Gom, warnes us about poachers. Grow eyes for poachers. In the end we see his plane flying off.
6:26 Merge point. Right before the double sided load platform a cast member collects Fastpasses, at the end of the walkway. This has moved up by the bridge now. Guests can head to the right or left. I go right. A poaching alert sign is on the wall and a safety spiel plays. The poaching nods have since been removed. On another wall is a “Photography Tips” sign. Riders should be ready to snap pictures and not block others. The safari truck will not stop for photos.
7:56 Load. The 32 passenger truck pulls up to load guests. In 2007 the ride vehicles were extended to include another row of seats for higher capacity.
