The topography around here is the edge of a hill? A river terrace? I wonder what it is. We make a detour and start climbing. There it is. It’s Myorakuji Temple. The Enma Hall? Enma in the center Apparently this temple is famous for its hydrangeas. There are about 1,000 of them. The hydrangeas are just starting to bloom. The construction noise is so loud that I’ll put on background music again. Here you can see a row of antique stone statues with mouths hanging from them. Since the era name is Bunka, it must be the end of the Edo period. The hydrangeas around here are still in bud. I’m not sure if it’s visible in the footage, but there is a Buddha statue at the top of a steep staircase. This is too sudden. I’ll stop. I kind of feel like he’s calling me. Rent a bicycle and head towards Mukogaoka-Yuen Station. This area is called Nagaodai, and there are ancient ruins there. They have been living on the high ground upstream since the Kofun period. Please enjoy a leisurely bicycle ride. This road is the Fuchu Kaido. It was built during the Edo period and remains a narrow road. We are now in front of Mukogaoka-Yuen Station. この町は、静けさの中にひそかにざわめきを抱えている。向ヶ丘遊園駅から遠く離れ、川を越え、丘の縁を歩いて妙楽寺へ向かった。閻魔堂のまえに立つと、文化の元号が刻まれた石像が時の深みを語る。開きかけの紫陽花が風にゆれ、遠くで工事の騒音が響いても、花たちは何も答えず、ただ次の季節を待っている。見上げた階段の先に仏像がこちらを見ていたが、なぜか足は止まった。仏に呼ばれない日もあるのだろう。自転車にまたがり、長尾台の高台を滑る。そこは古墳時代から人が暮らしていた場所だという。川沿いの府中街道は、江戸の痕跡をかすかに残しながら、新しい都市の輪郭に飲み込まれようとしている。向ヶ丘遊園の駅前に戻ると、高層ビルの影が街を覆い、昔日の気配は遠ざかっていた。それでも、静かに進むペダルの音だけが、見えない何かを引き留めているようだった。静と動、過去と現在。その境界をまたぐようにして、今日の旅は終わった。
