Who wouldn’t fall in love with this? The name “St. Gilgen” comes from Saint Aegidius, the village’s patron. The main church is dedicated to him, and you can see its tower from almost any street. The famous Schafbergbahn cog railway starts here. It takes you all the way to the top of Mount Schafberg (1782 m), where you get one of the most breathtaking views in all of Austria. There’s a historic school here with original 18th-century murals — and it’s still in use today. Locals are proud of their deep connection to tradition and education. Most houses in the center aren’t tourist decorations — they’re lived in. Some families have owned the same homes for over 100 years. In summer, open-air lake concerts take place here — no stage, just music played from boats. People sit on the shore and listen for free, as the sun sets behind the mountains. Scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed just a few kilometers away. You can actually walk or bike to some of the filming locations. The Salzkammergut region is often called the “Lake District of Austria. Birds singing… nature’s perfect soundtrack. Can you hear that? Just birds and calm. This is the “Girl with the Rainbow” fountain in St. Gilgen. Listen to the sound of water — so calming. This is one of the most beautiful lakefront spots in the Salzkammergut region — the promenade in St. Gilgen. From here, you see Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) and Mount Schafberg in the background. The house on a hill, neat landscaping, and those reddish shrubs above create a cozy, peaceful feeling Let’s head back to the lake — I can’t wait to see the water, the mountains, and the peaceful atmosphere again. It really feels like time slows down here… 🌿🏞️ I really love that there are benches here — you can just sit down, relax, and enjoy the view of the lake and the mountains. Do you also like to stop and simply listen to the silence? Look how many cyclists are here! This place is perfect for biking — smooth paths, fresh air, and breathtaking views. Do you enjoy bike rides like this? Getting the boat ready for the season! Many people settle right by the lake — on a blanket, with friends or family. St. Gilgen is not just a place to relax by the lake — it’s also a perfect base for day trips. In just 30 minutes, you can reach Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. If you enjoy hiking, this is where trails to Lake Fuschl and the Zwölferhorn mountain begin. You can even take a scenic cable car to the top for breathtaking alpine views. Local food here is a real highlight: traditional taverns serve fresh fish from Lake Wolfgangsee, authentic Austrian schnitzel, apple strudel, and locally made wine. In the summer, there’s even a small classical music festival held right here — intimate, charming, and loved by musicians from all over Europe. The atmosphere in St. Gilgen is incredibly peaceful. Even in peak season, it doesn’t feel crowded — people stroll by the lake, enjoy the mountain air, or go cycling through the village You can easily rent a small boat or a paddleboard right by the shore — the water is crystal clear, and you can often see straight to the bottom. Families with children will love this place: there are playgrounds, ping pong tables, and shallow areas for swimming. And if you’re into history, don’t miss the house where Mozart’s mother once lived — it’s right in the center, near the main church. What I really noticed about St. Gilgen is how incredibly clean it is — not just the lake and the air, but even the smallest streets. Everything is neat, full of flowers, and people here are polite and relaxed. I was also impressed by how gently nature is treated here — everything is built to blend into the landscape. Even the boat docks and cafés by the water feel like part of the scenery. As the evening sets in, St. Gilgen becomes even more charming. Lights along the lake promenade come on, soft music drifts from the cafés, and everything feels peaceful — a kind of calm you rarely find in popular tourist towns. Locals love to stroll along the water in the evening, while others enjoy dinner at a lakeside restaurant — it’s especially magical when the lights and mountains reflect on the water. If you’re looking for souvenirs, check out the little local shops: you’ll find handmade crafts, herbal teas, natural cosmetics, and authentic gifts from the Salzkammergut region. If you’re staying here for a few days, don’t miss a trip to the nearby town of St. Wolfgang. It’s just across the lake — you can get there by ferry or bus. St. Wolfgang is famous for its historic church and the cog railway that takes you up Mount Schafberg — from the top, you’ll get one of the most breathtaking views of Austria’s lakes. Also nearby is Lake Fuschl — it’s smaller, but the water is emerald green and the scenery is picture-perfect. And of course, you can reach Salzburg in just 30 minutes — the city of Mozart, Baroque palaces, and incredible architecture. Thank you so much for walking with me through this beautiful place. I’m really happy to share these peaceful moments and stunning Austrian views with you. If you enjoyed the video, please give it a like — it means a lot! Or maybe you’ve already been here? This beautiful Pfarrkirche St. Gilgen, located in the heart of the town, is one of the most important historical landmarks in the region. 🎨 Murals like this are common in Austria and southern Germany, often telling stories from local or imperial history. This is a typical architectural gem of the Salzkammergut region — with wooden balconies, flower boxes, and painted façades. Most likely, it’s a family-run guesthouse or boutique hotel, with a small clothing store labeled “Mode” on the ground floor.
