Hokkaido in the harsh winter. A fantastical station covered in powder snow and a silver world visible from the train window. “Japan’s northernmost station”, “a diesel train running through a snowstorm”, “an encounter with wild animals”, and “a platform at night”. We invite you to the fantastic world of snow trains that everyone should experience at least once. This is Nayoro Station, the gateway to Nayoro City located in northern Hokkaido. Approx. 76 km (47 mi) from Asahikawa and 183 km (113 mi) from Wakkanai. The name “Nayoro” comes from the Ainu word “nay-or-putu” (river, place, mouth). The Nayoro Basin is known for its “cold, snowy climate,” and has in the past recorded minimum temperatures of -35.7 °C (-32.2 °F) and daily maximum temperatures of -20.3 °C (-4.5 °F). This is Wakkanai, the terminal station of Japan’s northernmost line, the Soya Line. Approx. 396 km (246 mi) by train from Sapporo and 1,560 km (970 mi) from Tokyo. This may be the most famous “terminus” in Japan. Wakkanai Port is about 400 m (440 yd) north of Wakkanai Station. In the past, a railway ferry operated to Sakhalin. In 1936, the 427m long, semi-arched Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome was built as a breakwater. Later, “Wakkanai Sambashi Station” was also opened, but the sea route and railway were abolished in 1945 at the end of the war. It is now a popular tourist spot. Now, it’s almost time to leave. A special lavender train with lavender color accents (usually operated by regular cars). Japan’s northernmost station. The name “Sarobetsu” comes from the Ainu word “sar-o-pet” (river in reed field), and The Sarobetsu Plain stretches out along the line. The name “Wakkanai” comes from the Ainu word “yam-wakka-nay” (cold, water, river). It is said that about 80% of Hokkaido’s place names are derived from the Ainu language of the indigenous people. In particular, there are many words like “pet” and “nay” that mean rivers, so you can imagine that rivers and water were very important. The train moves slowly along the only section of the line where you can see the ocean. appreciated! Unfortunately, I can’t see Rishiri Island today. The limited express Sarobetsu connects Wakkanai and Asahikawa 260 km (162 mi) in approx. 3 hours and 45 minutes. Also, if you go to Asahikawa by local train, it will take about 5 and a half hours. If you have time, it’s a good idea to take a trip that stops at each station. Horonobe Station. Is this snow removal work inside the station? The area along the line is designated as a particularly heavy snowfall area, and is famous for having snowplows running almost every day during the winter. From this point onwards, the train runs through an area where there are many wild animals such as deer. You can see Teshio River. It’s frozen because of the cold. It is a rare sight that can only be seen in the middle of winter. Teshio-Nakagawa Station. A quaint station building decorated with local fir. Anyway, there is a lot of snow. I’m worried about the roofs. Teshio River is 256 km (159 mi) long. It is the second largest river in Hokkaido and the fourth largest in all of Japan. Although it is much smaller compared to large rivers overseas. The line runs parallel to the river until near Nayoro. The Teshio River basin has a typical inland climate, with an annual temperature difference of more than 60°C (194°F), and is a cold and snowy region. Oh? The train started to slow down. Here comes “Ezo Sika Deer”. The reason why deer enter railroad tracks is to lick the rails to replenish iron. The driver sounds the horn, but the deer does not run away. According to JR Hokkaido (Hokkaido Railway Company), there were 3,145 collisions between trains and deer in fiscal 2023. Finally, the deer gave way. The train is rushing ahead. Otoineppu Station. “Ezo Sika Deer” appears again! There was a delay, but I’m glad there were no collisions with deer. The Soya Line and the Teshio River are in love with each other. The time when the western sky begins to turn red. After about two and a half hours, the train arrived at Bifuka Station. We’ll get off here today. Thank you, it was a wonderful trip. Asahikawa City is the central city in northern Hokkaido. Asahikawa Station, which opened in 1898, is a key railway hub. From here, trains depart for the big city of Sapporo, Wakkanai in the north, Abashiri in the east, and Furano in the suburbs. The sound of diesel engines echoes across the 180 m long big roof. Then, hop on the Furano Line train and head out into the countryside. The new vehicle “H100 DECMO” debuted in Hokkaido in 2020. It is an electric diesel car (Diesel Electric Car) that uses electricity generated by a diesel engine and runs on a motor. [Highlights along the line] Asahiyama Zoological Park in Asahikawa City. The “Penguin Walk”, which can only be seen during the snowy winter season, is popular. The Furano Line is a tourist route that connects Asahikawa and Furano, almost in the center of Hokkaido. The line is dotted with popular sightseeing spots that represent Hokkaido, such as Biei and Furano. It takes about 30 minutes to arrive at Biei Station. This is an elegant station building built over 70 years ago using Biei soft stone. [Highlights along the line] Shirahige Faterfall. Spectacular scenery created by frozen white waterfalls and blue rivers. [Highlights along the line] Shikisai-no-oka. Enjoy vast flower fields and alpaca farms in the summer, and Snowmobile and Snow Rafting in the winter. The Furano Line is full of charm throughout the seasons. Finally, head back to the Soya Line. We are located at Bifuka Station, the gateway to Bifuka Town. Approx. 98 km (60 mi) from Asahikawa and 161 km (101 mi) from Wakkanai. It is one of the coldest regions in Japan, with record low temperatures of -37.0 degrees Celsius (-34.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in the past. A lone local train on a silent platform covered in powder snow. It’s like a scene from a movie. The name “Bifuka” comes from the Ainu word “piwka” (a place with many stones). The station building houses a shop and a tourist information center. In one corner is Murakami Haruki library. There is also a reference room for the now discontinued Biko Line on the second floor. The French bell in the belfry is rung twice a day. Being here, you can realize how much this station is loved by the locals and provides a sense of peace to travelers. We sincerely hope that these railways and facilities will remain as valuable assets for the region. See you at our next destination!
