FlightPub Cornwall Pub Tour Part 1 Flight to Bodmin and The Hole in the Wall Pub

Welcome to part one of our three-part Cornish
pub crawl. On our way where? Oh of course We’re off to Bodmin aren’t we. A nice quick tour of
the coast down in Bodmin You got some cracking pubs lined up Ladies and gentlemen welcome to
Flight Pub We didn’t think we’d be going Well the problem then is you got the cowling off, the
prop is spinning, how do you put the cowling in back on without getting your head chopped off
by the propeller? That’s the challenge. That would be a bit of a downside really would ruin
your day. Thank you very much I’m here all week. Oh my god. Yes the jokes can get worse. So we’ve
found our level then. Right we are in the hole in the wall in Bodmin and we’ve kindly been invited
behind the bar. So what is that? Skull would be my guess. It’s actually… I’ll tell you what it
is Don’t say anything No clues. Why is there a white stuffed lion here Steve Well that is
a very good question It is a good question Why you looking so happy then Gav I don’t know
why I’m looking happy Pete got no reason to be happy You can see we’ve got a tiny minor technical
hitch, flat battery. So uh flat battery John and the technicians here at Horizon are brilliant.
So they’re just swapping that out for a non-flat battery. So we should be all right but it’s
cost us a bit of time But look at the day, look at the weather It’s fantastic We’ve got
an incredible trip in front of us So we’ll be on our way We’ll just be a bit later but yeah
looking forward to it mate. On our way where? Oh we’re off to Bodmin aren’t we? A nice tour
of the coast down in Bodmin You’ve got some cracking pubs lined up. I’ve got the pubs, you’ve
got the plane. Well hopefully. Will it fly is the question? We just need a couple of buckets of
electricity so we’ll be fine. Ladies and gentlemen welcome to Flight Pub We didn’t think we’d be
going but we are. Or should I say Flight Pub. The beauty of this one is we both get to our
drink because we’re stopping over which is lovely That is a beautiful thing Yeah it is
beautiful thing Right Golf Victor X-Ray ready for departure. Victor X-Ray alpha one line
up runway 07. Via Alpha one line up runway 07 Golf Victor X-Ray. Right we’re rolling We are
rolling. Speed’s alive. We’re on the centre line Straight down the centre, 40 knots 45 50 55
Pull the stick gently back And we are flying And we are flying Okay never gets boring Never
gets boring mate Never ever gets boring Yeah what I was going to say is I don’t want to
be a backseat a driver but remember straight out to sea Yes thank you all right Thank
you Just being helpful That wasn’t sarcasm Uniform 22 clear touch and go. It turns out
that airplanes are not quite as simple as cars You can’t just stick a couple of jump leads on it
and go. We’ve done something similar in the past, the problem then is you’ve got the cowling off,
the prop is spinning, how do you put the cowling back on without getting your head chopped off
by the propeller? That’s the challenge. That would be a bit of a downside really spoil your
day. Hey Gav want to hear a homemade joke? Is it funny? It’s [ __ ] brilliant mate I made
it up myself. Self praise is no praise at all Go on. What’s the opposite of a plane? What’s
the opposite of I don’t know, a Submarine? No a fancy! Um got some cracking pubs lined up for you
Gav. Going to start with the Hole in the Wall in Bodmin Okay Proper boozer No food Um characterful
proper pub I got high hopes for it And just speaking to John at Horizon he went there years
ago and he also said that it’s a proper boozer, a good pub So yeah I’m kind of looking forward to
seeing that All right I hope I’m not bragging it up too much but I I love it Yeah depending
on time We’ll have to see how how we go Uh there’s potential for as many pubs as you know
uh you want but obviously uh we got to end up in Polperro Oh twist twist my arm I’ve got to
end up in Polperro sounds like worse places to be mate And it’s got one of my top three
favourite pubs which is… the Blue Peter That’s the one That’s the one Uh again I don’t
want to over-egg or sell it but perhaps it’s it’s just a proper pub mate You know it’s um
And it just happens to be in a chocolate box pretty location Yeah Yeah Yeah You’ll have been
in fancier pubs but it’s proper mate It’s proper I look forward to it mate For the first time
we’re doing an overnight trip so we both get to have a drink So obviously we’re not going to go
silly because we got to fly back the next day but we are going to have a couple of beers So I’m very
much looking for that So we’re just about overhead the Avon Dam reservoir Not particularly big Oh
it’s a nice flight plan has been activated Worthy of note So okay we’re approaching overhead
Plymouth. Astonishingly we can actually fly over it. Do you know what the red light area
in Plymouth is called Gav? Everything… the red light area? Plymouth “ho”! Thank you very
much I’m here al week. Oh my god. Yes the jokes CAN get worse! So I think we found our level
then. Overhead Plymouth Hoe Look at Smeaton tower Very picturesque I do like Plymouth Yeah
There’s the naval dockyard, not many ships in at the moment. Once you’ve seen one naval dockyard
mate, Yeah once you’ve see one. I don’t want MI5 after me. Strangely enough I can fly over
it, it’s not restricted. You’re joking? No, part of it is I think the Royal Marines
barracks is restricted but you can actually fly over it Oh I got it now I know where we
are now Know where we are now. You’ve got your bearings. I’ll slow this down. A bit bit jiggly,
bit jiggly Yeah I’m I’m going to slow it down Yeah we got the wind side on We got the wind
side Oh we got the that Okay Yeah got it. I can make a loop. Well I can’t go all the way
in because of the restricted area but I can do that Okay Yeah Wow Lovely Okay So
uh where next is the next point of interest? Looe is the next point of interest I’ve got her centre screen and she’s steady Oh go Nice Well this is looking good Nicely done sir After landing we took a taxi
into Bodmin, collected our hire car and headed to our first pub, the Hole in the Wall in the
centre of Bodmin Yeah So we’re in the Hole in the Wall. Doing a bit video here Pete, would you
care to explain to me why there’s a stuffed white lion in a case? I don’t know It’s a quirky pub and
that is a quirky thing We are going to find out. Well fair play Pete. You can’t get me on camera.
Sorry, no you’re alright. You’re supposed to be in work are you? Okay no problem Fair play Pete
yeah you struck gold mate This is fantastic. Let’s get some pictures of this Pete this is
amazing. Right we are in the Hole in the Wall in Bodmin and we’ve kindly been invited behind
the bar which is great Peter’s after a job. I’m with our host sorry I didn’t get your
name? Uh Steve. Steve! Lovely to meet you Steve Thank you very much Steve’s going to
tell us a little bit about the history of the place Right Well the the hole in the wall
used to be a debtor’s prison It goes back to 1749. Bloody hell. It predates Bobmin jail.
It closed in 1779 when Bobmin jail opened up because that was multi-purpose Right Okay And
then in 1840 it became a depot for the Redruth brewery and it held beer wines and spirits on
this site and that’s how it got its license and it’s been a pub since then? No it’s been a pub
since the late 1930s. Right Okay Brilliant But Redruth was a sister brewery of Devonish
from way back. Possibly I don’t know It’s before my time. Yeah Pete’s a proper pub nerd
as you can tell Yeah Yeah Yeah Pub and brewery and brewery like all all the old breweries that
have disappeared, Pete’s into all of that stuff Oh are you? Yeah. Beer soaked shite as Gavin calls it. Breweriana is the technical
word but beer soaked shite Yeah. Just have a feel the weight of that Oh yeah
So you can get some good distance because you don’t want anything light Well just
I suppose the casing on its own is going to be heavy enough isn’t it Yeah Well it’s
um if you have a look here I’ll open it up You’ve done this before obviously Yeah But
you look at the engineering on it Look at the machining The machine work on that Yeah Yeah First
of all look And it’s in good nick in there Yeah Look at that I clean that is That looks like
it’s brand new doesn’t it? Yes That’s amazing. Right I’m going to tee this up with a really dumb
question now Okay so Steve the landlord on the left Peter on the right We still don’t know why is
there a white stuffed lion here? Steve? Well that is a very good question. It is a good question.
It is a good question. The reason why it was here it was actually stolen by Launceston Rugby Club.
Brilliant. And this goes back to 60 or 70 years ago They stole it from the White Art Hotel in
Oakhampton. So what is that? Human skull is my guess. It’s actually… I’ll tell you what it
is. Don’t say anything. No clues. No laughing, nothing. Go on Pete what do you think that is
then? So now it looks leathery. Uh it is leather It’s naturally… Elephant’s ball! Yes. What?
Straight up. Cheers. Did you know that? That was a guess. It’s a prop, go on you’ve got to explain
now. Well how it got here? Yeah. You know I was telling you about Bodmin’s Great White Hunter?
Yeah. He found an elephant out on the moors and shot it but he he didn’t eat it too well. I’ve
only had one pint I’ve only had one point Yeah Yeah It really all right now Could it No I don’t
know why it’s here So here we are Flight pub trip to Cornwall and usually you’ll notice I’m in the
left hand seat and Pete is driving Pete’s on the diet coke Pete’s on the diet coke I’ve not got
a gob on about it or nothing He’s not sulking We flown into Bodmin, picked up our hire car We
went to the hole in the wall which was out of this world I mean classic quaint little town A390 Thank
you Doris But the welcome from the landlord Steve and Matt the guy behind the bar there and the
locals was off the scale. They called us behind the bar! Yeah they got us in bar They give us a
job I think It was It was so good It was lovely So now we’re on our way to the Rashleigh Inn.
I pronounce it Rasley but I’ve probably got it wrong We have been picked up by our pronunciation
once already by the locals So Foy is not Fowey it’s Foy A390 Getting picked up for pronunciation
when you’re Welsh is a whole new board game to be honest But there we go But yeah so this will be
stunning and we’ll give you a report when we get there Coming up in part two of our Cornish
pub crawl I’m taking Gav to the Rasleigh, Rashleigh Inn. I have to reluctantly admit it
has got a H in the middle of it It probably is Rashleigh Oh my god Thank you Peter Yeah that’s my
resident annoying git So we are in the Lugger not the Luger as I first said which is completely
incorrect in Polkerris, Polkerris? Polruan. Polruan! Polkerris was the last place sorry. Yeah
we do this so you don’t have to I do like that That’s very good Thank you for watching Flight
