The Night Before the Competition: Staying in an Ancient Village B&B Near Badaling**

The ancient village of Chadao, built during the Han Dynasty and reinforced in the Ming Dynasty 🤩
As soon as we entered, we felt as though we had traveled back in time, like stepping onto a movie set.
Being able to stay in such a precious ancient town is truly a blessing.

Strolling through the ancient streets, every stone on the pavement exudes an elegant, historic charm.
We enjoyed lamb skewers, authentic Beijing delicacies such as tripe hotpot, dumplings, braised beef shank, and more at the village’s restaurant—a thoroughly satisfying experience. After dinner, we were treated to a stunning sunset, where the sky turned into a golden “salted egg yolk” 🥰.

As for the B&B, there was an adorable and clingy cat. The moment we stepped in, it jumped onto our laps, letting us pet it. The next morning, as we were about to leave, we called out to the cat, and it immediately turned back to let us pet it again and say goodbye. It was just too cute 🥹😍.

Historical Introduction to the Ancient Village:
Chadao Town, located in Chadao Village, Badaling Town, Yanqing District, Beijing, is the site of a Ming Dynasty fortress. The existing ruins suggest that the fortress was originally built during the Han Dynasty.
In the 30th year of the Jiajing Emperor’s reign (1551), the Ming court adopted the proposal of Minister Wang Shiqiao to strengthen border defenses and rebuilt the Chadao fortress. In the 5th year of the Longqing Emperor’s reign (1571), further reinforcements were made to Chadao fortress, with the addition of blue bricks to the outer walls, forming the structure known today as Chadao Town. The exposed walls suggest that the fortress was not built all at once but evolved over time, transitioning through phases of earth, stone, and brick fortifications. The fortress, also known as the “Military Town,” was used to station garrison troops. At its peak, Chadao Town housed a command center, three subordinate battalions, and 788 soldiers.

Historically, Chadao Town was well-known in the northwest of Beijing, not only for being one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Yanqing” (Chadao Autumn Wind) but also for its critical role as a gateway and post station between Beijing and the northern deserts.
The *Juyong Zhilue* records: “Badaling is the key to Juyongguan, and Chadao is the shield of Badaling.” Chadao Town served as a military outpost for both Juyongguan and Badaling. Ancient commentators noted: “To defend Chadao is to defend Badaling; to defend Badaling is to defend Juyongguan; to defend Juyongguan is to defend the capital.”

During the late Ming Dynasty, the rebel army of Li Zicheng failed to capture Chadao Town after three days of siege and had to bypass the fortress via Shixia Pass to attack Juyongguan, eventually capturing Beijing.
