Hey, everyone! We’re kicking off today’s adventure with a train ride from Budapest to Visegrád! I’m boarding at Nyugati Station, one of Budapest’s main railway hubs, for a scenic 45-minute journey. The trains to Visegrád run regularly from both Nyugati and Keleti stations, and tickets are super affordable, around 1120 HUF, or roughly $3 USD. We’re heading north along the Danube River, and already, the views are stunning, rolling hills and glimpses of the river through the window. Visegrád is a small town nestled in the Danube Bend, a region famous for its dramatic scenery where the river curves through lush, forested hills. Fun fact: the name Visegrád comes from Slavic roots, meaning “high castle,” which hints at the star of our trip today, the Visegrád Castle! This train is comfy, and the route is a favorite for day-trippers from Budapest looking to escape the city. Now, we are going to take a ferry from Nagymaros to Visegrád, it’s just a quick 5-minute ride across the Danube! It’s so cool to see how the ferry hooks onto this platform and carried it across the river We’ve arrived in Visegrád, and wow, this town is like stepping into a postcard! Visegrád is a small, charming village with a population of just under 2,000, nestled right along the Danube River. The town’s history goes back over a thousand years, tied closely to Hungary’s medieval past and its strategic spot on the river. As I walk through the streets, you can see colorful buildings, quaint cafes, and a relaxed vibe that’s perfect for exploring. Visegrád was once a royal seat in the 14th century, when King Charles I moved his court here, making it a powerhouse in medieval Hungary. The town’s location made it a key trade and defense point, with the Danube serving as a vital route for goods and armies. Check out these cobblestone paths and old houses, some date back centuries, giving the town a timeless feel. There’s also the Solomon Tower nearby, part of the lower castle complex, which was used to control river traffic back in the day. Fun fact: Visegrád is famous for the 1335 Visegrád Congress, where kings from Hungary, Poland, and Bohemia met to form an alliance. It’s like a medieval G7 summit! I’m popping into a local bakery to grab a quick kürtőskalács, a Hungarian chimney cake, it’s sweet, crispy, and perfect for the walk. The town also hosts Renaissance-themed festivals, where locals dress up as knights and royalty, how cool is that? You can feel the history everywhere, from the old stone walls to the riverside promenade with views of the Danube Bend. If you visit, don’t miss the local restaurants serving hearty Hungarian dishes like pörkölt, a paprika-spiced stew. Visegrád’s small size makes it easy to explore on foot, but there’s so much history packed into every corner. Before we head to the castle, I’m strolling by the river, it’s so peaceful, with the forested hills looming in the distance. The Danube Bend is one of Hungary’s most picturesque spots, and Visegrád is right at its heart. Alright, it’s time for the main event, let’s hike up to Visegrád Castle! The trail starts just outside the town and winds through a dense, beautiful forest in the Visegrád Hills. This is a moderately challenging hike, about 2.8 miles round-trip, and it takes roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. The path is rocky in parts, so I’m wearing sturdy shoes, trust me, you’ll need them for this climb! The trail offers glimpses of the Danube through the trees, and the fresh forest air is so refreshing. This area is part of the Duna-Ipoly National Park, home to diverse wildlife like deer and even wild boars, though I hope we don’t meet one today! The hike is steep at times, but the views get better with every step, perfect motivation to keep going. Locals say this trail was used centuries ago by knights and royalty heading to the castle, imagine that! There’s a legend that a secret tunnel once connected the castle to the river for quick escapes during sieges. As we climb higher, you can start to see the castle’s walls peeking through the trees, it’s getting exciting! The trail is well-marked, but it’s a good idea to bring water and maybe a snack for the journey. Some tours even combine this hike with a sauna experience afterward, which sounds like the ultimate reward! Almost there now, the anticipation is building as the castle comes into full view! Here we are..Visegrád Castle, perched high above the Danube Bend! This medieval fortress, also called the Upper Castle, was built in the 13th century and expanded by King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century. It’s famous for its epic views of the Danube Bend, where the river curves dramatically through the hills. The castle was a royal residence and a key defensive stronghold, thanks to its strategic spot on this 328-meter-high hill. Fun fact: the Holy Crown of Hungary was kept here for safekeeping during turbulent times in the Middle Ages. The castle’s hexagonal keep is a highlight, it’s one of the best-preserved parts and offers panoramic views. Inside, there’s a small museum with replicas of the Hungarian crown jewels and exhibits on medieval life. Did you know? In 1330, there was an assassination attempt on King Charles I right here, but he survived! The castle was partly destroyed by the Ottomans in the 16th century, and what we see today is a mix of ruins and restored sections. These stone walls have witnessed centuries of battles, royal feasts, and political intrigue. It looks delicious! Visegrád Castle also inspired the name of the Visegrád Group, a modern alliance of Hungary, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia. Standing here, you can imagine knights in armor and kings plotting their next move, it’s like stepping into a history book. The castle hosts jousting tournaments and medieval festivals in the summer, bringing the past to life.
