This is the Welcome Gate of An Bien District, Kien Giang Province, on National Highway 63. An Bien District is an administrative unit of Kien Giang Province, the Southwest region of Vietnam. With a special location in the Mekong Delta region and bordering the Upper U Minh region, An Bien has a strong river culture associated with the history of land reclamation, struggle and homeland building of the people of the South. Meaning of the name An Bien. An means safe and peaceful. Bien means border, edge, remote area. The name An Bien means a peaceful border area, expressing the people’s desire for a stable life in a new land. History of the formation of An Bien district The ancient land of An Bien is a wild land full of dense forests and crisscrossing canals. Since the 19th century, in the process of opening up to the South, Vietnamese migrants from the Central and Northern regions have followed canals such as Cai Lon River and Xeo Ro Canal to reclaim land and settle here. An Bien used to be a part of Rach Gia Province, the old name of Kien Giang Province. It belongs to the area called Mien Thu with a system of artificial canals such as Xeo Ro canal, Thu Ba canal, Thu Tu canal. It was dug by the French to transport resources . This land gradually became a key agricultural area, especially rice cultivation and aquaculture.
