Cross the white bridge. This is right in front of the builing “Irene” Keukenhof gardens. The most beautiful gardens of the world. And this is Keukenhof in full bloom. We will take you on a tour through the entire park. We arrived at 8 o’clock and went home at the end of the day. Keukenhof changes as the days pass by. This is the second time this year that we went. The first time was on April 11th, when the famous 42 kilometer long flower parade (“Bloemencorso Bollenstreek”) took place. This video is our visit on April 28th. Two weeks later, and Keukenhof has transformed. We will start with all the highlights: the little water with the soft hills of flowers left and right; the floral pattern, the blue river of flowers and more. And we will visit Miffy – of course – the Mill, the lake. And we some parts we visited twice that day. The light changes, and so does the view. Enjoy The lake side. “Vijver” The floral pattern / tulip tapestry: in the early morning The same spot in the after noon And at the end of the day Keukenhof: The Garden of Europe Each spring, for just eight weeks, a quiet corner of Holland becomes one of the most photographed places on earth. Keukenhof is not a wild landscape, but a meticulously designed park where color, light, and movement are carefully planned. Here, over seven million bulbs burst into bloom, planted by hand each autumn by a team of expert gardeners. Winding paths, reflecting pools, and sculpted trees create a floral stage that changes every year. The garden is silent in winter. But in spring, it wakes, and every step reveals another layer of beauty. Keukenhof is an artwork in motion—but timing is everything. And the best moment is still to come. Tulip Mania: A Bloom of History The true peak arrives in early to mid-April, when late bloomers meet early varieties in a perfect storm of color. It all depends on the weather. In our experience, peak tulip is from around the third week of April. Not all tulips flower at the same time—some rise early, some late, creating different moods with each passing week. April light is crisp and clear. Even overcast skies give the petals a kind of saturated intensity that feels surreal. This short window, just before the fields are harvested, is when the colors burn brightest across the garden. But this tulip bloom is more than seasonal. It recalls a deeper story of wealth, trade, and obsession. And that obsession extends far beyond Keukenhof, into the surrounding land that once made the tulip famous. The flower fields around Keukenhof offer a great opportunity to rent a bike and explore Early flower fields are often of hyacinths and daffodils. This is in March. Tulip fields are at their best in the second half of April. But the tulips are harvested at “Queen’s Day”: April 30th. If you want to see the biggest flower fields: visit North Holland (towns Schagen, Kolhorn) and Noordoostpolder. The Beatrix area The Bloemen Corso and the Bollenstreek Just outside Keukenhof lies the Bollenstreek—the bulb-growing region where flowers and farming meet history. Each spring, the Bloemen Corso, or flower parade, passes through here, linking the towns and tulip fields in motion. Floats made entirely of flowers roll slowly past, covered in fragrant layers of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils. The parade has been held since 1947 and draws hundreds of thousands to see it in motion each April. Keukenhof stands beside the route, connecting the fixed beauty of the garden to the moving theater of the parade. Mind you: you cannot see the parade from inside Keukenhof. The parade passes by Keukenhof, going from Noordwijk to Haarlem. Together, the park and the Bollenstreek tell the story of a flower that changed the Dutch landscape forever. The Journey of the Tulip Tulips did not grow here originally. They came from the steppes of Central Asia and later flourished in Ottoman gardens. In Istanbul, they were bred for symmetry, color, and form, symbolizing both paradise and royal power. In the 16th century, tulip bulbs reached Europe through diplomatic exchanges and merchant networks. By 1594, they bloomed in the Leiden Hortus Botanicus, the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands. Soon, rare tulip varieties became collectors’ items—especially the striped or flamed ones caused by a virus. By the 1630s, tulip bulbs sold for sums larger than a merchant’s house. Then the market collapsed—Tulip Mania was over. The flower remained, though. And the Dutch made it their own, mastering its cultivation over generations. Today, that history still blooms each spring, quietly rooted in the soil beneath Keukenhof. A Gallery of Varieties Keukenhof features over 800 tulip varieties, arranged in curated displays that change with every passing day. From the dark and dramatic Queen of Night to the pale, star-shaped White Triumphator, variety is the theme. Some tulips are bold and geometric—others ruffled, twisted, and soft, like brushstrokes on a living canvas. There are tulips named for royals, artists, cities, and even fictional characters, each bred for a distinct purpose. Some are centuries old. Others are the result of years of patient crossbreeding in modern greenhouses. Keukenhof shows them all—not as products, but as living sculptures shaped by light, soil, and human hands. And every visitor walks among them, discovering a new favorite with each turn of the path. Miffy. Nijntje. Right next to the “Willem Alexander” compound, the cute Miffy store is located. And behind the Miffy store is the blue river of flowers – Muscari flowers. The Dutch windmill of Keukenhof. We will go into the mill. Keukenhof by the Numbers The park spans 32 hectares—roughly 80 acres—making it one of the largest flower gardens in the world. Each autumn, more than seven million bulbs are planted by hand, timed precisely to bloom in waves. The park includes pavilions, ponds, wooded areas, and sculptures, creating moments of surprise and calm. Over 1.4 million visitors come during the short season, from all over the world, to see the fleeting spectacle. Keukenhof is more than a garden—it’s a carefully choreographed experience of scent, sound, and silence. But for those who want to see it, preparation is essential. Knowing when and how to visit makes all the difference. Practical Tourist Information Keukenhof is located in Lisse, about 40 kilometers southwest of Amsterdam and easily reached by public transport. Direct buses run from Schiphol Airport during the season, with combo tickets that include entry and transport. The park is open from mid-March to mid-May, with the highest bloom usually in the first two weeks of April. Weekdays offer a quieter experience; early mornings or late afternoons are best for photography and peace. Spring weather in the Netherlands can be unpredictable—bring layers and something waterproof just in case. Outside the gates, bike rentals let visitors explore the flower fields of the Bollenstreek up close. The season is short—but once seen, Keukenhof stays with you, like a painting that only appears once a year. Part of the fun of visiting Keukenhof is seeing people from across the world Together with Amsterdam, Efteling and Giethoorn, Keukenhof ranks at the top most visited tourist attractions But Keukenhof is something special: people dress up in springtime or traditional dresses from around the world We saw quite a lot of photo- and film shoots happening: beautifully dressed women with a personal camera crew to capture it all And we saw a couple of marriage proposals happening in the garden Juliana – keukenhof The light dances on the colour and shape of the flowers Oranje Nassau Beatrix The Lake – early morning We were on the road before 6 o’clock to be here at Keukenhof when it opened at 8 The park has a very special atmosphere in those few early morning minutes The park has a very special atmosphere in those few early morning minutes For only just a while, you have the park for yourself. And it is wonderful to see how the traveling sun changes the scene during the day We immediately walked to the heart of the park, away from entrance to catch this rare moment The Lake – at noon At the end of the day This is around 16:00
