This is behind the counter at Taruya, a Japanese father and daughter run Traditional style Teppan Okonomiyaki izakaya aka drinking restaurant, that’s been around for almost 100 years. It’s tucked away in Hyakkendana, a hidden little area between Dogenzaka and Bukamura, once the busiest part of Shibuya…back in the day before 109 and even the famous Shibuya scramble crossing ever existed. This Tokyo restaurant has a warm, homey vibe often found in Japan’s countryside and today we’ll get a rare glimpse at how this family has kept their business running for generations.

  1. Your videos are the highlight of my YouTube viewing on Fridays, lol. Keep em coming!

Much love from Georgia, U.S.A 👊🏿

  2. Do you have a google map pin list of all the places you featured in this series? Would love to see them all in a map.

I love your hot sauce! Wish I bought more but it just means I need another japan trip

  3. I love watching these videos in traditional Japanese restaurants. But sometimes I feel a bit worried about the amount of visible build up of dirt. I really don't mean to be rude, I know their shops are often very old, but I just wonder why some of them are not clean, in the interest of food hygiene.

  4. Completely falling in to this videos. I love the stories behind the old shops weather it is food or anything other related.
    ありがとうございます

  5. I just love the Behind the Counter videos, every place has it's own charm, so it never gets old.
    Keep up the good work!

  6. When you started filming in the kitchen 🤢
he has his knifes in a dirty box.. 😳

  7. What a hardworking family! The food looks amazing. Wish nothing but happiness and success to them.

  8. I wonder if the shots of kitchen can get them in trouble. I guess is normal in Japan, but in western restaurants that could get the place shut down.

  9. out of curiosity; how are these family run spots doing after your episodes? are they able to handle the uptick in business?

I'm a budding travel company, my first organized tour abroad is Japan, and I would love to focus on places like this; especially as I can now see one can book the whole place out (is that common?)

could a US travel agent potentially book locations like this as well, for small groups?

thank you for your videos, Pablo; and ty to anyone who may provide answers! ❤❤

  10. Yes! I was just hoping for an episode and I got to say I absolutely love the quality of the video it looks so great! The colors of every dish just pop and I am so envious of how there isn't food in the states that have the quality and care as well as menu like these and a family generation restaurant just has me in smiles 🥹 I loved the episode!
