NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿 The Magical Routeburn Track – Hiked In A Storm!

I hiked New Zealand’s famous Routeburn Track — and it was wild! – Head to www.squarespace.com/paddydoyle to get 10% off your first website or domain with Squarespace!

We battled through relentless rain, heavy winds, and freezing mountain conditions… but just when we thought the entire hike would be a washout, the skies cleared. What followed were some of the most breathtaking alpine views I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t easy, and it definitely wasn’t cheap, but it turned into an unforgettable adventure.

Just like on the Milford Track, I booked the full experience with Ultimate Hikes, who provide a guided version of the Routeburn complete with warm lodges, hot showers, and hearty meals at the end of each day. It’s a premium way to experience New Zealand’s Great Walks — and when the weather turns bad, it makes all the difference. Even with the stormy start, the trail’s beauty still managed to shine through.

If you’re considering hiking the Routeburn Track — or just want to know what it’s like to spend $2,000 on a wild adventure in the mountains — this video is for you. Drop a comment if you’d do this hike yourself, rain or shine, and don’t forget to like, subscribe, and check out my Milford Track video for more epic New Zealand hiking content.

  1. Never seen Lake MacKenzie that low. You probably had the first wet days for weeks….but as you now know Fiordland is good when its fine and sunny and pouring with rain. Some water tanks at many huts in Fiordland and the West Coast this summer had run out of water. Hardly any rain for weeks prior to your Milford and Routeburn trips.
    I really enjoy your videos…..

  2. Loved that video mate……mainly because I did the Routeburn a few days before you and snagged 3 perfect weather days, no clouds, sunshine & no wind!! I feel a little sad you werent able to get the views I got (although that summit lake is mind blowing beautiful & will last with me forever) but ironically the Fiordland National Park comes into its own when it rains. The waterfalls and lakes are Godzone beautiful 🙂
I did get a lot of fomo watching you eat rack of lamb and all those naughty snacks as I did the 2 nights camping, carry all my gear and pitching the tent…..but 2 nights only cost me $50 NZD ($30 USD). This is exactly why I was able to pick the best weather as I only booked it 3 days prior to going and had about 20 others pitching tents also. I wouldnt want to do that if the weather was crap.
Thanks Paddy for showcasing what I believe is one of the greatest walks in the world (& I'm a local). Cheers buddy!

  3. I love how hard you’re going with all the hikes. Which is the best way to see NZ.

If you have a bit of time, please check out lake Marian track. It’s incredible.

  4. If you do it without a tour you only have to pay for huts which are only 80 bucks a night on season and 25 off season

  5. You are even making Kiwis want to rediscover NZ ! Thank you Paddy for your kind words about Aotearoa New Zealand . We are stupidly grateful when travellers love it!

  6. Love seeing you explore my back yard. will be out and about in the Wilds over the next couple of weeks.

  7. OOH PADDY THIS IS JUST MAGICAL 👏👏👍👌🌈✨ YOUR NZ HIKE IS WORTHY OF A TV DOCO 👏👏👍👌🎉😃 AMAZING THANKU

  8. As a kiwi. The best time to be in Fiordland is when it’s wet as the bush is spectacular ❤ enjoy our country

  9. You should come to Alberta!!! Banff national park and Jasper National park during summer time is incredibly gorgeous!!! Assiniboine is breathtaking during larch season!!! This is my backyard and I enjoy it so much😍😍😍

  10. . just found your videos on a trip to vietnam.loving all your filmed adventures and the way you film

  11. Chocolate 🤣😂🤣you bought the wrong brand, Whittaker's the one that rules them all…

  12. I live and work in New Zealand, but I need to move abroad and become a tourist so I have enough money to come back on a holiday and experience it.

  13. You nailed it here man! Cinematic masterpiece so nicely executed and narrated! Just wow!

  14. Kia ora paddy love everything you have done, my wife and i have been following for a while now, we are so glad you are in AOTEROA nz our home,,just a little little correction on the spelling of Te Anau and is prounced (te ar_no) which means place of swirling water anyway no biggy my wife and i live in the cook islands and would love it if you were to come here.

  15. Hey Paddy its spelt Te Anau😊..shame I can't paste photos of when we walked last year as day 2 and 3 were clear and beautiful. Note the cost also includes helicopter repatriation in case of weather or accident. Sorry during copped a typical kiwi mountain storm.

  16. Your recent videos have been fantastic! The footage quality / editing / overall watching experience is great thanks!

  17. Hey Paddy, Great vid. I wouldn't normally post about a typo but just in case a viewer wants to Google mapm search, its spelt Te Anau ( not Te Anu) . Pronounced Tee-R-Now. Cheers

  18. Another great adventure although unfortunately less than ideal conditions. Your comment about bringing your umbrella made me laugh. I’ve done a fair bit of rainy hiking and I’ve done it with rain gear and ponchos and even the brolly. If it isn’t too windy or too technical the brolly wins every time lol. Don’t let folks take the piss out of ya lol. Cheers mate!
