This is the most important annual ritual at Fudatan Shrine. Praise is given to the gods, and prayers are made for the safety of the Imperial family, the prosperity of parishioners and worshippers, and bountiful harvests. The festival, held every year on September 23rd, features a ritual called “Mitama Utsushi” to transfer the divine spirit to mikoshi (portable shrines) gathered from the districts of Kojima, Kamifuta, Shimofuta, Kamigagake (Nakayoshi Festival Association), and Tenjinmae. Led by a scaffolder’s wooden bell, nine large and small mikoshi, four drums, three floats, and a procession of children pass through the torii gate and parade down the old Koshu Kaido road, which has been closed to vehicular traffic.
In the Kagura Hall, performances of biwa, koto, and Japanese drums and Kagura dances are held, and festival stalls and food trucks are set up within the shrine grounds. The Tenjin-dori Shopping Arcade, which is the approach to the shrine, is turned into a pedestrian paradise, and the “Children’s Tawara Mikoshi” parade through the streets. Children who wish to participate can apply at the shrine with their guardians
On the 25th, a priest and a representative of the parishioners will hold a traditional Shinto ritual called the “Grand Festival” at the main hall, and a shrine maiden will offer a dance. In the Kagura hall, the Saito troupe will perform Sato Kagura, which acts out myths from the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.
