Base! Nepal🇳🇵To Japan 🇯🇵 by bicycle || S2 E68 || World Tour || Japan
In this episode, we started our day early in the serene Higashi Village, witnessing a breathtaking sunrise over the lake. The tranquil beauty of the lake was a perfect start to the day, and we packed our bags and tents, ready to ride back toward Naha, via a different route.
A Scenic Ride Through Coastal Roads and Forests
Due to the strong winds, we decided against heading further north and instead chose an alternate road. This route offered a challenging ride through steep inclines and dense forests, but the spectacular views of the vast blue sea made every effort worthwhile. The coastal scenery and untouched nature of Okinawa truly highlighted why this island is so special.
A Taste of Japanese Hospitality
On our way, we met a kind villager who offered us some food. Although he only spoke Japanese, his warm gestures and hospitality spoke a universal language of kindness. Encounters like these are what make traveling through Japan a heartwarming experience.
History and Culture: US Military Bases and Religion in Japan
As we cycled further, we passed by some US military bases and war sites, a stark reminder of Okinawa’s historical significance. During World War II, Okinawa witnessed devastating battles, and even today, the island houses a significant number of US military bases, a topic of both local and international interest.
We also learned more about Japan’s two primary religions:
Buddhism: Introduced to Japan in the 6th century, it emphasizes spiritual enlightenment and practices like meditation. Buddhist temples are common throughout the country and often serve as places of reflection and prayer.
Shinto: An indigenous religion unique to Japan, Shinto focuses on the worship of kami (spirits) found in nature, ancestors, and sacred objects. Shinto shrines are widespread and are often characterized by their torii gates.
The coexistence of these two religions reflects the cultural harmony and spiritual richness of Japan.
Stocking Up and Camping for the Night
After exploring, we stopped at MaxValu, a popular Japanese supermarket chain, to buy some fresh meat and snacks for our evening camp. We returned to our first campsite from the beginning of our journey, reminiscing about the incredible experiences we’ve had so far.
Stay tuned as we wrap up our cycling adventure in Okinawa, reflecting on the beauty, history, and culture of this unforgettable island.
