The elephant is a mammal of infinite variety and paradox. From cumbersome, bulky bodies sprout delicate, wispy eyelashes; smooth, ivory-white tusks contrast with a million dark creases; while a pair of small, doleful eyes peers out from beneath huge flaps for ears. Profoundly intelligent, with a complex social structure, they are also fascinating to watch. When you have spent time with them, it becomes incomprehensible why anyone might want to extinguish an elephant’s life just to steal their ivory tusks, yet almost twenty years after the ban on ivory trade was implemented, the ivory trade is still booming.
