Ryan it's straightforward North America connections dominating Haneda Airport simply explained as oneworld Alliance JL AA future HA vs Star Alliance UA/NH. What you could have done was China Eastern SkyTeam Alliance Tokyo Shanghai Taipei you don't have to deal with the mess if they can't put you on to China Eastern SkyTeam Alliance would provide you another route to reach TPE. Knew this from my parents Star Alliance reroute EWR-MNL via LAX/HND original plan second reroute option was EWR-LAX-TPE-MNL and then fixed to reach Japan original stopping point this time NRT. For an apex suit which one would you choose Korean Air Light Blue seat or JL version?

You can transfer from different airlines to different airlines at Terminal 2 which is not dominated by a single airlines but for some reason you cant in terminal 1 which is dominated by China Eastern
