The Shimotani Shrine Festival, which has a history of over 1,000 years, is the earliest summer festival to be held in downtown Tokyo.
The distinctive feature of the “Shimoya Shrine Festival” is that the “Hon Matsuri”, in which the main shrine’s mikoshi is passed, and the “Kage Matsuri”, in which only the neighborhood mikoshi is carried, are held every other year.
The mikoshi of the main festival is a large mikoshi, also known as the sengan mikoshi, and 7,000 people from all over the country gather to carry it.
It is usually held from Friday to Sunday, close to May 11th, and on Saturdays and Sundays during the period, around 140 festival stalls set up stalls around the shrine, making the festival even more exciting.
