This is a gathering festival centered around Tamasaki Shrine, the Ichinomiya of the former Kazusa Province. It is said that the spirit of Tamasaki Shrine appeared as a jewel from the sea, and once a year, the various deities associated with the shrine’s deity, Tamayorihime, gather together. The reason for the twelve shrines is that, as written in the “Sannomiya Fukudaigongen Yushusho” (Sannomiya Fukudaigongen History Book), which was transcribed in 1690, “The twelve portable shrines of Shimonogo Tamagaki Daimyojin No. 1, Sannomiya Fukudaigongen No. 2, Honno Daimyojin No. 3, Ninomiya Daimyojin No. 4, Kanedamura Minamimiya Daimyojin No. 5, and Ichinomiya Tamasaki Daimyojin No. 6, are carried to a place called Taito Tsurigasaki.” In the past, six shrines and twelve portable shrines gathered together, but the number has changed over the years due to several changes in the number of shrines.
The current festival is held every year from September 8th to 14th, but the annual festival on the 13th is the most popular, when a total of nine mikoshi from five shrines – Tamasaki Shrine in Ichinomiya, Ichinomiya Town, Chosei County, Nangu Shrine in Miyahara, Ichinomiya Town, Tamasaki Shrine in Nakahara, Misaki Town, Isumi City, Tamasaki Shrine in Shiiki, Ichinomiya Town, and Tanigami Shrine in Tanigami, Ichinomiya Town – gather at the festival grounds in Tsurigasaki, where they each perform a ritual to unite the divine spirits before setting off one by one on their return journey.
The sight of shirtless men carrying the mikoshi and running up the shore in a valiant performance called Shiofumi is commonly referred to as the naked festival.
