Koenji Awa Odori is one of the most representative Awa Odori festivals in Japan, second only to Tokushima Prefecture, and is a Tokyo summer tradition. The shopping streets and main streets north and south of JR Koenji Station become the performance venues, and over two days, more than 160 dancers perform Nagashi Odori to the light music. The sound of flutes, drums, and bells reverberates, and the dynamic scene is overwhelming.
Koenji Awa Odori originated in 1957 as a promotion measure called “Koenji Baka Odori” planned by the youth division of a Koenji shopping district. In response to the “Tanabata Festival” that was already being held at the neighboring station, Asagaya, they adopted the tropical Awa Odori. It later expanded to neighboring shopping districts and surrounding neighborhood and community associations, and has built up a history supported by the cooperation of related organizations and the voices of people who love Koenji. Awa Odori is a traditional Japanese performing art in which a group of dancers dance to the accompaniment of Japanese instruments called shamisen, taiko drums, gongs, and shinobue, while shouting in a two-beat rhythm. The chant of the Koenji Awa Odori is “A fool who dances and a fool who watches; if you’re both fools, you’d better not dance,” which is exactly the concept of the Awa Odori.
