Thank you for always watching our videos. In this episode, we’re taking you on a virtual tour of the Ashiya Town History and Folklore Museum in Ashiya, Fukuoka Prefecture. Filmed using the GoPro HERO8, this video offers an immersive experience as we explore the museum’s charming Showa-era retro atmosphere.
Ashiya Town was once a thriving port town, known as “Ashiya Senken, Seki Senken,” standing shoulder to shoulder with Shimonoseki as an important gateway at the mouth of the Onga River. The History and Folklore Museum showcases precious artifacts that tell the rich story of this area. Highlights include Jomon period human remains from the Yamaga Shell Mound, traditional Ashiya iron kettles, and materials related to Ashiya Kabuki, providing visitors with a deep dive into the town’s cultural and historical heritage.
The museum houses approximately 16,000 items, ranging from fossil and archaeological artifacts to items related to agriculture, commerce, trade, fishing tools, religion, and performing arts. As you walk through the museum, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time to the Showa era, making it a fascinating and nostalgic experience.

The Ashiya Town History and Folklore Museum is located at 1200 Yamaga, Ashiya Town, Onga District, Fukuoka Prefecture. The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM), and it is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and during the New Year holidays.
