What is Hino-bayashi?
Hino-bayashi is said to have originated 150 years ago (at the end of the Edo period) in Toko-ji Temple in Hino, around what is now Hino Sakae-cho 5-chome. It is made up of seven pieces: Haya, Kamakura, Noboruden, Miyakamakura, Kunigatame, Yonchome, and Niba, and is characterized by its simple, unadorned performance.
The Hachioji Festival, said to be one of the Kanto region’s leading float festivals, features 19 intricately carved floats. During the night parade, the floats are lit up by lights, creating a fantastic sight that is different from the daytime, making the parade worth seeing.
In addition, you can fully enjoy the many traditional cultural aspects of Hachioji, such as the lion dance, an intangible folk cultural asset designated by Hachioji City and performed at shrines in the city, the Kanto Taiko Battle that reverberates through the summer sky, and the folk dance nagashi, where dancers in yukata gather on Koshu Kaido.
