Shiogama Port Festival #shorts #japaneseculture #japan #travel #traditional
The Shiogama Port Festival is one of Japan’s three major boat festivals. It began in 1948, shortly after World War II, with the hope of reviving the industries of the port town of Shiogama and revitalizing its exhausted citizens. The highlight of the festival is the Mikoshi Kaijo Togyo, where two mikoshi (portable shrines) from Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine, known as ‘Ichinomiya of Mutsu Province’ and boasting some of the highest numbers of worshippers in the Tohoku region, are placed on the ceremonial boats ‘Ryuho Maru’ and ‘Ho-o Maru.’ These boats, accompanied by a fleet of about 100 vessels, parade through Matsushima Bay, one of Japan’s three most scenic spots. The sight of the majestic and splendid flotilla against the backdrop of beautiful islands and the sea resembles a Heian-period picture scroll.
