Hachiman Shrine enshrines Emperor Ojin and has been worshipped by local people since ancient times.
The year of its founding is unknown, but it is thought to date back to 1312, the first year of the Showa era at the end of the Kamakura period, when the land of Oku was donated to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, and a plaque remaining at the shrine confirms that the main shrine building was built in 1385.
The annual festival is held on the first Saturday and Sunday of August. Held once every four years, the festival is called the Shinko Festival and sees a grand parade through town featuring the head shrine’s portable shrine and other items.
The sight of the portable shrine progressing alongside the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Toden Arakawa Line) is a very distinctive feature of this festival.
