In the northeast of Tokyo lies Yanesen, a quiet sacred area that offers a glimpse into old Japan. Yanesen is made up of the areas of Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi (the initials of their respective names), each dotted with shrines, temples and small shops. These areas escaped the bombing raids of World War II and therefore have retained their original charm. Wander the quaint narrow streets, see old Japanese houses and shops, watch artisans make arts and crafts in the authentic way and enjoy traditional sweets and snacks.
A visit to Yanesen offers an interesting contrast to the common sights of modern Tokyo: the crowds of Shibuya crossing, the buzz of electronics in Akihabara, the blinding lights of Shinjuku and the futuristic buildings of Odaiba.
“Yanaka Ginza” Shopping Street is located within a five-minute walk from Nippori Station. About 70 shops line both sides of the narrow 160-meter alley. As you walk along, the delicious smells waft from the deli and the spirited shouts of the shopkeepers lift your spirits. You’ll also see people enjoying eating as they walk. You can enjoy the flavors of the downtown area, such as the crispy fried Genki Minced Cutlet at Nikuno Suzuki and the sesame-covered sweet potato Chonmageimo Tamaru.
“Nezu Shrine” is an ancient shrine that is said to have been founded by Emperor Yamato Takeru over 1,900 years ago. The grounds are famous for their azaleas, and seven buildings, including the main building and Karamon gate, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. After visiting the main hall, pass through the torii gate on the approach to Otome Inari Shrine. The torii gates were donated with the prayers and gratitude of worshippers, and the beauty of the overlapping torii gates is exceptional, and their magnificent appearance will have you feeling like your soul is cleansed.
