神奈川県足柄下郡箱根町の箱根関所。
江戸時代の姿をそのまま再現された芦ノ湖畔に立地する箱根関所。
当時の旅人たちはこの関所で厳しい改めを受けたそうです。「入鉄砲出女」と言われるように特に女性には厳しく改めを行われたのでした。人見女と呼ばれる女がそこを通過する女性の身体的特徴を事細かく検分したそうです。
１７０２年には江戸へ奉公に出ていたお玉という女の子がホームシックになり箱根関所を越えようとしました。しかし、その試みは成功せず関所で捕まると、2ヶ月後に処刑されてしまいました。今でも関所の近辺にはお玉が池や於玉坂など彼女の名前が由来の地名がいくつかあります。
そんな箱根関所。旅人を検分をしている様子足軽番所の役人たちの生活、高台にある遠見番所での見張りの様子などが人形で再現されています。また箱根関所資料館には様々な資料が展示されています。

Hakone Checkpoint in Hakone-cho, Ashigarashita-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Hakone Checkpoint is located on the shore of Lake Ashi and is an exact replica of the Edo period (1603-1867).
It is said that travelers in those days were subjected to strict inspection at the Hakone Checkpoint. As the saying goes, “A woman who enters with a gun and leaves with a gun”, women in particular were strictly punished. It is said that a woman called “Hitomi-onna” meticulously inspected the physical characteristics of women who passed through the gate.
In 1702, a girl named Otama, who was serving in Edo, became homesick and attempted to cross the Hakone Checkpoint. However, her attempt was not successful and she was caught at the barrier and executed two months later. Even today, there are several places near the barrier named after her, such as Otama-ga-ike and Otama-zaka.
Such is the Hakone Checkpoint. The Hakone Checkpoint Museum features dolls showing the life of the Ashigarubanjo officials inspecting travelers, and the guard station on the hilltop. The Hakone Checkpoint Museum exhibits a variety of materials.
