This hall is located in the outlying grounds of Homyoji Temple and enshrines Kishimojin, the Buddhist guardian deity of safe childbirth and child rearing.
The current main hall is said to have been built in 1664 with a donation from Jishoinden Eishinnimyo Daishi, daughter of Maeda Toshitsune, lord of Kaga domain, who married Asano Mitsuaki, lord of Aki domain, during the reign of the fourth Tokugawa shogun, Ietsuna. The statue of Kishimojin in the main hall is not in the form of an ogre, but a beautiful bodhisattva wearing a feather robe and a yoraku, holding a baby.
The large ginkgo tree in the temple grounds is also a historic tree that is said to be about 700 years old.
There are a variety of events held throughout the year, such as the Kishimojin Bon Odori dance in July and the Oeshiki Grand Festival in October.
An artistic building near Minami-Ikebukuro Park. Its exterior exudes an extraordinary atmosphere, leaving many curious as to what on earth it is. This piece of architecture is called “Hiraki: Philosopher’s Stone” and was designed by Bon Juko, an architect known as the “Japanese Gaudi.”Although it is currently only used as an office, it was once used as a residence, and its entrance can still be viewed today. Experience this mystical space overflowing with vitality. On the first floor of the building is the standing bar Tachinomiya Kihei, so if you want to linger on the afterglow a little longer, we recommend stopping for a quick toast on your way home.
Animate Ikebukuro is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and has been a favorite of anime and manga fans for many years. But Animate has another reason to celebrate: it recently completed a renovation that transformed it into one of the largest anime shops in the world. The 10-storey complex expands into the former Ikebukuro Health Centre, doubling the floor space and adding a new theatre and exhibition hall.
To mark the completion of the renovation and expansion, the walls of the first, second, fourth and fifth floors will be adorned with around 350 autographs from famous anime creators.
The second and third floors are dedicated to young adult manga and feature light novels, fanzines and art supplies. It might be a challenge to browse the entire second floor, but the shelves are stocked with staff recommendations.
