Turning 30 in The Art Islands — Naoshima & Teshima ☆゚.*・。゚
Eight years ago, I came across this article about the art islands, and ever since then, I knew I really wanted to go. It always felt a little out of the way, but this being Cris and I’s first trip to Japan together, I knew it was the right time. We have a full length mirror, and then we have the whole room, pretty big I would say. Two twin beds again. Then the sink is right here. What’s our view? It’s a market! But we get a good look at the electronics store and the train that we rode to get here. This is pretty nice. It’s right in front of the port and it’s right next to the train. So I feel like we did a good job. Look at this. This is mine. This is mine. For dinner, we found a place called Osaka ya, just five minutes away from the hotel. It was simple, not flashy, and it felt like eating at home. I’m gonna share what I’m wearing today. My scarf is from Vou store in Kyoto. I’m wearing Gentle Monster sunglasses I got in Osaka. Ganni jacket, nerdys sweater, Max Mara pleated skirt, the Frankie shop pants, 7 11 tights, coming of age New York bag, and then Solomon’s. I feel pretty warm, I feel like a penguin. Time to drink coffee and then we’re gonna go to Te shima. We have one hour on this ferry It’s so quiet in here. I think we’re gonna go to the basketball court? Oh yeah, and there’s a ferry schedule here. Which is great. We’re here, all by ourselves right now. Isn’t that crazy? Literally the only ones in this cafe. And we were the only ones, for the most part, in the museum. Tomorrow’s my birthday too, so this feels very special. I’m whispering because it’s so quiet in here and no one is talking. We got some coffee and we got a little loaf, a lemon loaf. Right now it’s 1:30 we’re here until 4. And then tomorrow we’re gonna go to Naoshima. And we’re actually staying on the island. But yeah, can you believe this? This museum is very much worth it. If you’re coming here, you should definitely come to Teshima. I hope you can hear me. We’re in Teshima! We just finished at the museum And it’s cold We’re at, what’s this place called? Nobody Wins. Nobody wins basketball court. I should try. At times it felt like we were the only two people on this island. And one thing I didn’t prepare too much for was the lack of food options. Everything seemed to be closed and it was Friday. I would definitely pack a lunch if I were to come again. Okay, our next mission is to find food in this little island. Wish us luck. Let’s do this! Spider? Oh my god! What happened? A spider? It’s so far! We did end up finding a market close by. I think one of the only ones, to be honest. We got a few snacks to hold us over before our ferry. For dinner, we went to Kawaichi for okonomiyaki. Just a warning, there was no English on the menus and it feels like a local spot. but it was really, really good. Oh my god, you got the red face one. Just walked up these steps. We’re hungry now. Ready to eat some early dinner. Wow, she’s gorgeous. She’s so pretty. No, don’t jump. We still have a whole night of activities. Okay, you can run. Hi everyone I forgot my mic in the room, but we’re here in Naoshima, the sun is going down. Oh yeah. And today’s my 30th birthday, which I keep forgetting because being here is distracting me from that. But I’m so happy, I’m so blessed and grateful to be here right now. And the night’s not over yet. We’re staying at the Benesse House Park Hotel. The design is by Tadao Ando. This crazy roof. And then we have a balcony! And I’ll show you this again in the morning. Woah, art. You can’t forget the best part Hanna We’re sleeping with art It’s currently 9:59 turning 10pm. I’m in bed. I spent the whole day looking at art. I got this, aerial corn potachi We just went to the Benesse House Museum which is free for Benesse guests until 11pm.Isn’t that crazy? It’s been a long few days but really fun and we have about 4 full days left. It feels like it’s going really quickly, and I’m really sad, even though you’ve done so much. Yeah, I mean, it’s not my birthday in the States yet, or it is. It’s 5 in the morning in SF right now, so it hasn’t really felt like my birthday. Tomorrow, we’ll try to get to Mishima early and have a cake with my grandma before we leave back to Tokyo. We’re doing a lot. A lot of different things. I was thinking about going to the Denim District of Japan, which is in Kurashiki District. I feel like it’s gonna be an extra two hours in our journey. I don’t think it’s worth it. Maybe next time. Yeah, tomorrow we’re gonna take the ferry back to Uno. And then we’re gonna go to Okayama, which takes about an hour. Shinkansen to Kyoto, which is about an hour. And then a two hour train ride back to Mishima. Busy day. And then on Monday we’re gonna head back to Tokyo for the rest of our trip. I already know I’m gonna have major culture shock. Yeah, I’m sad to leave, but I’m really happy to be here turning 30. They’re so salty and so good. I really want this one this is stressful I got the same one! The odds are not in my favor. Okay, this is a gift. Pink! I think I should stop now. These would be good gifts. I really felt at home here. This hotel opened up in 1992 and the idea was to integrate a museum with a hotel. Fully designed by Tadao Ando and his concept was the coexistence of nature, art, and architecture. This has probably been one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited in Japan. I will definitely come back maybe in a warmer month. After some sad goodbyes, It’s finally time for us to go back north back to Mishima and Tokyo! Thank you guys so much for the support over the past month. I’ve had so much fun reading all your comments I’m excited to wrap it up and show you guys the last video of the series. So i’ll see you guys very soon
Hi ~ We’re back and now in Kagawa Prefecture. It’s my first time 🙂
We planned this trip to Japan around my 30th birthday so why not spend it in the most surreal, arty, and spiritual place I can think of? I can barely describe my experience with words so I hope that this video captures some of that essence. Felt like a little piece of heaven and I’m still humbled seeing Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, Tadao Ando, and Sou Fujimoto’s work in one day! Will forever remember these days on the islands and I’m already hoping to go back soon.
If you made it this far, thank you all for the support! I’m happy that I can express my experience through these small videos and maybe transport you to this beautiful country I’m so connected to.

You should try Awaji island next…there is a Tadao Ando complex called Awaji Yumebutai and the Water Temple. There's also a Kenzo Tange monument by the Naruto whirlpools, but It's far. Closest launching point is Osaka.

Is teshima museum the only work of art you visited in the island? there are more works of art in teshima, so are in Naoshima. you better come back during the next seto inland triennale in 2025. By the way another art festival ,Echigo-Tsumari Triennale directed by the same art gallary director, is held in Niigata pref this year.
I’m in love with your vídeos and editing and photography, it’s so calming 🌷
