くらやみ祭 大國魂神社 2024年5月6日 神輿還御

The annual festival of Okunitama Shrine in Fuchu, Tokyo. Originating from the “Kokufu Festival” in Musashi Province, this historic festival has been held for over 1,000 years and is designated as an intangible folk cultural asset by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Various religious ceremonies are held over the seven days from April 30th to May 6th every year, but the most exciting event is the “Mikoshi Togyo” on May 5th. Six large drums are beaten along with the fireworks as the signal, and eight mikoshi are carried to the Otabisho (the intersection of the old Koshu Kaido and Fuchu Kaido). The name “Kurayami Festival” comes from the fact that this “Mikoshi Togyo” used to be held in the dark after the city lights were turned off.

Other events worth seeing include the “Komakurabe” (horse race) (May 3rd), in which six horses race back and forth along the old Koshu Kaido, and the “Dashi Procession” (May 4th), in which as many as 22 floats are paraded. During the period, the area is bustling with around 500 outdoor stalls, and many visitors also flock to the area for the Kanto Plant Fair, which is held on the east side of the temple grounds, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the town.
