The city is renowned for its Zhoucun Sesame Seed Cake, which is hailed as the “No 1 Sesame Seed Cake in the World”. Zhoucun’s historical significance is further highlighted by its role as one of the starting points of the ancient Silk Road, leading to its reputation as “Gold Zhoucun”, “Dry Wharf”, and the “Home of Silk”. The Dye House, which specialized in sizing-dye, was a pivotal industry during the late Ming Dynasty, initially focusing on cotton cloth before Zhoucun evolved into a notable center for silk processing in China by the late Qing Dynasty.
