I aim for Hachioji from Nihonbashi
I head towards Hachioji using Route 20 (Koshu Kaido) and the old Koshu Kaido from Nihonbashi
I used to live in Hachioji, so going back there is also a source of joy for me
This is my first time cycling to Hachioji, so I’m looking forward to the new experience

From here, I’ll head towards Fuchu City
19 kilometers to Hachioji.

About Okunitama Shrine
Ookunitama Shrine’s history traces back to the 41st year of Emperor Keiko’s reign (111 AD),
when the enshrinement of Ookunitama Okami as the protective deity of Musashi Province began on May 5th."
Since the Taika Reforms, local government functions, known as ‘Kokuo’ (provincial offices),
were established in this area, and the ‘Kokushi’ (provincial governors) conducted the rituals.
In the Heian period, a system called ‘Sosha,’ which involved the enshrinement of various deities together, was established. In Musashi Province,
Ookunitama Shrine became the chief shrine under this system
In the late Heian period, it became known as ‘Musashi Rokusho-gu,’
Worshipped as a deity for dispelling misfortune, protection from all directions, bringing good luck, and fostering connections.
The annual grand festival, known as the ‘Kurayami Matsuri,’ has been cherished since ancient times
Starting at 5:00 PM on New Year’s Eve, the ‘Ooharai-shiki’ purification ritual is conducted to cleanse away impurities from the passing year
"At midnight on New Year’s Day, a ceremony called ‘Hatsu Taiko Uchizome Shiki’ is held with 60 worshippers,
using the sound of drums to dispel evil influences."
