The Tokai Maru was one of four
Kinai Maru-class cargo ships built in 1930.
This type of cargo ship surprised the world
by shortening the travel time between
Yokohama and New York by approximately
10 days, compared to the previous 35 days.
This was the moment when Japan’s shipbuilding
technology caught up and overtook the rest of the world.
The Tokai Maru was primarily used to transport raw silk, but
at the start of World War II, it was commandeered by the Navy,
and then in 1943, it was torpedoed by an American submarine and
sunk here.
This is a very famous ship in the history of shipbuilding.
