From Deer to Temples: A Day-Long Adventure in Nara and Kyoto šÆšµ
Good morning everyone. This isĀ our second full day here and we’re going toĀ Ā go eat some breakfast. Right across the street isĀ a 24-hour place that serves up like riceĀ Ā bowls with meat and stuff and eggs. So we’re goingĀ to eat that. It’s a cheap meal hopefully. And thenĀ Ā
We’re going to take the train to Kyoto and Nara to see the deer. So hopefully we’ll have a greatĀ Ā day and have no problem catching the subway there.Ā It seems pretty straightforward and I like ourĀ Ā
Hotel. It’s right by Dontonburi and all the eats andĀ it’s just across the street. And we have a 7-ElevenĀ Ā right next door a few steps away and also a LawsonĀ and then right after that is the subway station.Ā Ā
So I’m pretty happy with the location. Let’s go.Ā It’s right here, right across the street. ThatĀ Ā bus is blocking it, but we’re going to crossĀ the street there and go to breakfast. Okay hereĀ Ā it is. Kind of diagonally across the street fromĀ us. It’s got all these bowls of eggs and stuff.Ā Ā
Sorry the ambulance is coming, but that’s whatĀ it is. Pretty affordable. It’s like maybe $3 to $4 a bowl. Okay this is like really complicated. Let’sĀ see. What do you want dude? Beef bowl or…? Curry’sĀ Ā
Kind of heavy for… You want like a kids meal?Ā What’s a kids meal? What you get? You gotĀ Ā egg and hamburger steak with rice underneath. ThatĀ looks pretty good. And I got the like stirĀ Ā fried pork with onions and there’s riceĀ underneath. A soft boiled egg to throw it on
Top. And there’s miso soup. That was a wonderfulĀ breakfast and we didn’t really want to film inĀ Ā there because it said no cell phones and stuff.Ā So we didn’t want to be rude, but the meal – theĀ Ā
Hamburger steak with egg and my…I think it’sĀ gyudon, but I’m not sure. It’s like a sliced porkĀ Ā with onions and a soft boiled egg over riceĀ and seaweed miso soup was both together only aĀ Ā little over $7 maybe $7.65 or something likeĀ that when I used my converter. So super cheap.Ā Ā
We might go there again for breakfast. It wasĀ very delicious. And now you can see the OsakaĀ Ā Metro. We’re going to go into the station. OhĀ we went to the station across the street theĀ Ā other day but there’s different entry points. SoĀ we’re going to take the train to Nara first andĀ Ā
See if we can do that. We found our way aroundĀ to Universal Studios and back yesterday. SoĀ Ā we did a pretty good job of that. So we did haveĀ a little hiccups here and there, but it’s prettyĀ Ā self-explanatory. It’s just more hard toĀ get the ticket on the machine and know whichĀ Ā
Amount to pay. That’s my problem more thanĀ finding what line to pick and what platform. Okay we made it to Nara. It was veryĀ simple and one train from our station inĀ Ā Osaka. This is the train station or the subwayĀ here and it’s got all the deer. So Nara is famousĀ Ā
For their Deer Park where the deer roamĀ free there and they actually bow to youĀ Ā for crackers. So the directions are prettyĀ simple. It tells you where to go if you want toĀ Ā catch the bus to the park or if you wantĀ to walk on foot. It’s this way. If you useĀ Ā
Google Maps too, it’ll tell you to go thatĀ way as well. So we’ll meet you at the park.Ā Ā Alright we got the rice crackers from theĀ rice cracker man. They’re here all over inĀ Ā Nara. So Aiden’s going to try to feed him. GoĀ ahead. You got to break it out into pieces though.
They bow. It’s so cute, they’ll bow for crackers. Try make them bow. This way go feed them there. Alright you’re very hungry. Here you go. There you go. So this is Nara Park. It just goes on and on and pretty muchĀ Ā
The deer in the city just kind of roam aroundĀ the sidewalk and then you’ll see these vendorsĀ Ā it’s about 200 yen for a bunch of rice branĀ crackers that they like to eat. I heard that ifĀ Ā
If you don’t come here early…you don’t have toĀ come too early. It’s like about 9:00 am now. They’reĀ Ā still hungry, they’ll eat. But if you comeĀ towards the end of the afternoon because theyĀ Ā get fed all the crackers from all the touristsĀ they won’t eat your cracker. So you’ll be stuckĀ Ā
With a whole bunch of crackers. So it’s good toĀ come I would say probably before noon time soĀ Ā that they’re hungry. Otherwise you’re going toĀ buy crackers for nothing because they’re going to beĀ Ā full from all the tourists feeding them. ButĀ they can get aggressive. I guess it’s earlyĀ Ā
In the morning because they’re hungry and theyĀ were attacking my jacket. So my jacket smellsĀ Ā like nasty deer breath. It’s like a bad breathĀ smell and they were eating my backpack straps.Ā Ā So they can get really aggressive if they areĀ hungry, but I don’t think they actually biteĀ Ā
You they’re just trying to get into your pocketsĀ because they think there’s food in it. Alright we’reĀ Ā going to keep walking up this way and try toĀ see some temples. This town is pretty small andĀ Ā
It’s just known for the deer. So we’re not goingĀ to spend too much time here. It took about maybeĀ Ā a half an hour by subway or train or whateverĀ you want to call it to get here. We took theĀ Ā
Kintetsu line and it comes right to the entranceĀ of the park. Not too bad of a walk. It kind of doesĀ Ā go uphill a bit, but after that it does go flat.Ā So after that it’s a pretty easy walk. We’re here at a famousĀ confectionary place that does mochiĀ Ā and they do it right in front of you. The nextĀ show is at 11:15, but we don’t have time for that.Ā Ā But they make it right in front of you and theyĀ dip it in kinako, which is the grounded up roasted soybeans.
Mmm! So soft. I think the inside has azuki beans. Yeah the inside has azuki beans. There itĀ is. It’s really soft and fresh and good. AlmostĀ Ā like melts in your mouth. Not a fan of azuki beansĀ but that’s pretty sweet and good. Alright lastĀ Ā
Stop in Nara before we head to Kyoto is some NaraĀ Zushi and they spell their sushi with a “Z”. This isĀ Ā a traditional form in this area. I read that theyĀ used to preserve it in persimmon leaves. So you’ll seeĀ Ā
It in the leaves because they were not nearĀ the sea. So let’s try a little one. I like thatĀ Ā they sell these little boxes. Maybe we’ll getĀ a mackerel and a salmon. So that’s what it looksĀ Ā
Like. That doesn’t look too bad and I guess it’sĀ preserved in this leaf and it ferments on itsĀ Ā own. So it has that vinegary taste. AlrightĀ we got our Nara Zushi. A little small boxĀ Ā
To just sample it. I’m going to sit down and eat.Ā It’s wrapped like this and that’s cute. I don’tĀ Ā know what that is, but it’s in these little persimmonĀ leaves. You’re supposed to unwrap them. So you gotĀ Ā one mackerel and one salmon. So this is theĀ salmon. That’s cool. Alright here she goes.
The rice is fermented, but it tastes likeĀ vinegar, but a little bit stronger. But theĀ Ā salmon actually tastes like smoked AlaskanĀ salmon. It has a smoky flavor to it. Saba the mackerel. That one’s really good. I like thatĀ one. We made it. We’re here in Kyoto and thatĀ Ā
Was a ordeal and we’ll talk about that later. ButĀ getting here on the train was very interestingĀ Ā and hard. They make it very difficult to travel by train. Yeah that was a very difficultĀ Ā
Thing to do by train. You had to go on a LimitedĀ Express, which we did for the airport. So you’reĀ Ā paying extra on top of the subway ticketĀ because you’re doing a train. That was fine.Ā Ā
It got us to the station, but to get out of theĀ station it wouldn’t let us out. So we askedĀ Ā the help there who was not as helpful. He ranĀ away. But he did say you have to pay extra toĀ Ā
Get out, which doesn’t make sense to me. But itĀ is what it is. It’s very confusing. This is theĀ Ā famous street where you can possibly seeĀ geisha. But they’re usually not out until later. Usually around 5:00 p.m. But we’reĀ not going to stay that long, but I like theĀ Ā
Architecture and the old schoolness of it.Ā Supposedly if you walk down this streetĀ Ā you can see very nice old style JapaneseĀ architecture. If you’re wondering too,Ā Ā interestingly enough the timing is close. ButĀ in April the Japanese government is going to beĀ Ā
Banning the tourists from this area becauseĀ there are a certain few number of tourists thatĀ Ā are very rude and they harass the geisha. TheyĀ tug at their kimonos, grab at them, and insist onĀ Ā a photo, which is very rude. So they will beĀ banning the tourist here because of that.Ā Ā
That’s unfortunate. I’ll just be showingĀ some sites around here and there’s a lotĀ Ā of tour groups here too. But I’m not going toĀ talk too much because obviously I’ve never beenĀ Ā here and I don’t really know the history ofĀ it and I am probably just as excited as youĀ Ā
Or interested as you on this architecture andĀ this old city. All I know is Kyoto used toĀ Ā be the capital of Japan before Tokyo became theĀ new capital. So, this was once the area whereĀ Ā the capital was, which is very interesting. AndĀ I’ll just let you see all the beautiful old buildings. Okay we’re going toĀ try lunch here at Tokkyu Ramen. I think thisĀ Ā is the one. Or is it this one? I don’tĀ know. Oh yeah this is it. Yeah let’s try it. Tokkyu Ramen is very popular and a veryĀ tiny hole in the wall. I will say this wasĀ Ā
The best ramen I’ve ever tasted EVER includingĀ the ramen we had in Osaka. The mamasan that madeĀ Ā this put a lot of love and care into it. TheĀ broth was really rich and the noodles wereĀ Ā nice and chewy and cooked to perfection. All forĀ only 900 Yen with char siu.
Alright this isĀ our last stop in Kyoto. I know you’re probablyĀ wondering like what the heck you didn’t go toĀ Ā the Kyoto Castle, the bamboo forest… Yes I knowĀ about those things, but our feet are gettingĀ Ā tired and it’s going to be a long train/subway/Ā whatever ride back to our hotel so we canĀ Ā
Have dinner in Osaka. This is the birthplace ofĀ Kabuki theater and I think that’s so cool. It’sĀ Ā actually the original birthplace and they have aĀ sign here with the stone of where it was born. SoĀ Ā if you don’t know, it is Japanese theater whereĀ they put on the makeup. Pretty interesting andĀ Ā
Cool. It’s right here in the middle of thisĀ bustling city right next to a subway stationĀ Ā and a bridge. Kind of crazy how there’s all thisĀ old history in this now modern bustling city.Ā Ā Alright we’re back in Osaka in Dontonburi and we’reĀ going to go on a mission to find some reallyĀ Ā
Good sushi or sashimi. Hopefully we can getĀ to where we’re going because it is dinner time andĀ Ā this place is full of tourists. So you knowĀ everybody has probably the same idea. So let’s
Go. As you can see there are many tax free shops. SoĀ if you go to the Visit Japan website and apply forĀ Ā the tax free thing, which is super easy, when youĀ buy things and as long as you don’t open themĀ Ā
And they’re gifts to take home you don’t haveĀ to pay taxes. They’ll give you a discount.Ā Ā Most of the price that you see and you payĀ for is straight up. It’s not like in theĀ Ā
US where they add tax to it. the tax is alreadyĀ added. So they’ll minus it from your receipts, butĀ Ā you have to keep the receipts when you get toĀ customs at the airport to show that you paid forĀ Ā
Tax free and show your QR code that you appliedĀ for – the Japan tax free program as a tourist.Ā Ā But as you can see this is the main street of Dontonburi. I’m horrible at pronunciation as you knowĀ Ā
So I’m probably killing that. But this is just aĀ whole street of food and the other side streetsĀ Ā as well. Look at these beautiful strawberries. OhĀ my goodness. I saw strawberry mochi the otherĀ Ā day too at night. So hopefully I can find someĀ tonight if I have any stomach room. The reasonĀ Ā
If you’re wondering why did I pick Osaka overĀ Tokyo – one day I might go there – but Osaka isĀ Ā known as “Japan’s Kitchen.” It is all about foodĀ and that’s what I do. I eat. And I’m interested inĀ Ā
The culture and the food of everywhere I visit. SoĀ that is the reason why and I just love all theseĀ Ā 3D signs like the crab back there, the dragonĀ and the strawberry, and then there’s Spider-ManĀ Ā climbing into a scallop shell back there. Alright this is our first try. I’m not sure we’reĀ Ā
Going to get in. It is night time. Look at allĀ these people. We’re going to go to Kura Sushi. ItĀ Ā is a popular revolving sushi restaurant similarĀ to Genki, but much better quality of course. AndĀ Ā
This is their headquarters. We’re going to goĀ and try to get a a seat. I’m not sure if we canĀ Ā because the Google Map said it was slightlyĀ busy. So we shall see if we can get a seat here. Alright it’s super crowded in here,Ā but it’s all self-service. You got toĀ Ā
Punch in your information and then youĀ get a number and then they’ll tell you what seat to go to.Ā Ā Alright we finally gotĀ in. That was a lot of people in there, but itĀ Ā wasn’t too bad of a wait and it’s kind ofĀ very organized. So you have to use thisĀ Ā
Little app and you can pick stuff here too.Ā Let’s…I don’t know. What is this? Normal. In the middle of a meal.Ā I don’t care. I don’t know. Whatever. Okay let’s see. Let’s get someĀ fatty tuna. Get two. Oh no. So complicated. Two.
Order. And then we’ll go throughĀ that. Oh they got uni. Let’s justĀ Ā go through this so you guys canĀ see. Soy nuggets. interesting. Lean tuna, dragon rolls, sashimi. That’s super cheapĀ too. 530 Yen. That’s really cheap. Ramen, sushi
Sets, steamed egg custard, red miso soup. We gotĀ nigiri, all kinds, shrimp, but you pretty much getĀ Ā the gist. We’re going to order a bunch of stuffĀ and show you guys. Alright so this is some ofĀ Ā our orders. We got some fatty toro or otoro or the fatty tuna. This is fatty salmon.Ā Ā
Got two orders each. This is aged fugu. I’veĀ always wanted to try fugu, and there’s fuguĀ Ā restaurants here, but it’s quite expensive. So IĀ don’t think we’re going to go there, but I canĀ Ā say I tried it. Abalone and more things coming.Ā Got the beer here. Interesting thing is all theĀ Ā
Stuff is in here. Chopsticks and all and gingerĀ and the green tea. If you want green tea, there’sĀ Ā hot water and this is where you put the finishedĀ plates in. But there’s no dish to put your soyĀ Ā
Sauce so I guess you just put it like that andĀ it’s quite thick. Interesting. Alright here we go. Oh my goodness that is super fresh.Ā especially for conveyor belt sushi. Ā Ā Oh my goodness! Wow! Alright so I’m going to try
The fatty tuna. Dip it in some shoyu. There’s likeĀ no wasabi too here either and it’s… I don’tĀ Ā think it’s underneath here. Interesting.Ā Alright this is the sashimi. Pretty good. LooksĀ Ā nice. Very thin though. Alright this is the fuguĀ fish. That’s poisonous blowfish. Here I guess I’ll dip it in soy.
That ain’t my thing. It’s veryĀ chewy and crunchy and has a weirdĀ Ā flavor to it. So I’m really glad IĀ did not go to a fugu restaurant andĀ Ā pay like 90 to 100 bucks because thatĀ ain’t for me. But at least I can say IĀ Ā
Tried fugu. But not my thing. This is someĀ abalone. Looks really good. I like abalone. That’s crunchy and fresh. This is the sea urchin. And then I guess when you’re done, you can startĀ putting your plates in here. That’s where it goesĀ Ā
And that’s how they count how many platesĀ you got. You can put some more in. There youĀ Ā go. When you put plates in, it plays this littleĀ game and you might win something. I’m not sure. No we didn’t win anything. Alright this isĀ the crab and shrimp mountain. That’s what it was called.
So good. This is so dangerous thoughĀ because you keep ordering stuff, butĀ Ā it’s reasonably priced compared to Genki Sushi or anything in the US. Did we win? We put ourĀ plates in. Even if you win whatĀ Ā do you win? I wonder. Oh it’s crying. YouĀ didn’t win anything.
Alright last one. This is my scallops. I’m not totally full.Ā We’re not full, but we want to eat someĀ Ā food outside. So on the street. Food likeĀ the dessert. So we’re going to save our appetite. So it’s Ā„6080. What is that?
So for all that and we ordered a lotĀ $40.23 with beers and drinks. That’s not bad. NotĀ Ā a bad deal at all. So if you want to have prettyĀ affordable conveyor belt sushi and consideringĀ Ā what we had we had a whole sashimi bowl full ofĀ different sashimi, like four orders of fattyĀ Ā
Tuna, scallops, abalone, sea urchin, all that withĀ the beer. Can’t go wrong. For two people that’s aĀ Ā deal. Alright that’s our second day. Is it secondĀ day or third day? At Osaka and trying out someĀ Ā of the food here in Dontonburi and our sushi andĀ everything. So hopefully you enjoyed that and ourĀ Ā
Trip to Nada and Kyoto. If you like this pressĀ the like button, subscribe if you’re new, andĀ Ā join us on our last full day and also I’ll beĀ making a separate video (Hopefully it works out.Ā Ā
I’m not sure because I’m just speaking on the fly.)Ā of just street food. So join us then. ProbablyĀ Ā two more videos to go that I can make in this trip.Ā And thanks for joining me have a great night. āšš¤šŗš£
In this video we took a short day trip from Osaka to Nara, then to Kyoto by train. We saw the deer at Nara Deer Park, visited Todai-ji Temple, Hanamikoji Street and the Yasaka Shrine.

What a nice trip….Spring Break? Aiden's breakfast looked like a Japanese loco moco! Just needed more gravy! When I visited Nara Park, I actually DID get bitten. The deer were so aggressive as I was trying to open the bag that the crackers were in. I'm sure it wasn't aiming to bite me, but in all the frenzy, I got nipped. No blood, but it was kind of painful initially!
After watching this, I really miss visiting Japan š¢š¢š¢š¢š¢ Great vlog Misty , I have some travel envy now.
Excellent video Misty !
Awesome video of y'alls trip. I love it. Really can't beat the prices and quality of food in Japan. At the conveyor belt sushi, you usually just pour the shoyu right on the sushi instead of in a plate/bowl.
Aloha Misty and Aiden; Thank you for taking us along while you tour the sights and enjoyed the great food. It was nice seeing the friendly deer, the Shinto temple and the Buddhist temple. Your dining experiences were awesome, and at such reasonable prices. Aidenās Japanese-take on the āLoco Mocoā got the me, and the sushi restaurant was like a Japanese-version of dim sum, but with really fresh, and delicious, food. Looking forward to the next segment of the Osaka trip. Best wishes and much š§§, fellow šÆ! š¤
Loved this! So at conveyer belt sushi place, did you get anything off the belt or did you just order what you wanted from the tablet? Loved the deerā¦
Great eats Misty. It ll looks so fresh and tasty. That Ramen & sushi looked really good. Mahalo for sharing and making us drool š
š WOW! THANKS MUCH for sharing and OMG >>> BREAKFAST ALL DAY for me please š Nara Deer were amazing to see, and Old Kyoto š ALL the BEST and Cheers! š
Awesome video Sista. I don't know about the transit system around there. Seems very confusing. I love the fact that your son eats the same food as you. Kudos to you. Sashimi especially. Take care Sis.
Boy, you pack a lot in one day. I really admire your sense of adventure. My dad and I found the trains and subways stressful and difficult to navigate…and he was born there. š
Oh yummy mochi looks like matcha and adzukiā my fave! Really cute wrapped sushi. The train station would seem confusing. I would love to see Kyoto one day for its history, culture, and architecture. Amazing day! Ramen looks so ono ono. Interesting tax free QR card explanation. Thank you for valuable info.
Glad to see you had a packed day figuring out the Train system and then to see the deer. Aiden must have loved it.
Food looked amazing! Thank you for bringing us along. Looking forward to the other Osaka vids!
Interesting that you said you chose Osaka for the food – I would have guessed the amusement park for your son. Honestly, you can't go too wrong with the food anywhere in Japan as long as you don't have dietary restrictions. Though if I were going to travel somewhere specifically for food in Japan (which I wouldn't for various reasons) I would probably pick Hokkaido.
Too bad the trains were confusing. I am a big Japanese train fan. Did you get to take the Hello Kitty train (goes between Kyoto and Kansai airport)?
Yes, he is doing a great job with the camera.
Train ride sounds no fun and that would stress me out beyond control. Other than that the day looks awesome! š
Misty & Aiden Mahalo for sharing your journey ! Beautiful Nara deer park ! Love the temples and the shrine ! Enjoy & safe travels !
Dear Misty, thank you for sharing your wonderful video and your adventure such a beautiful trip. Have a great day. Peace out to you and Aiden.
Aloha Misty. I've always wanted to go to the deer park and also Kyoto – I'm sorry to hear tourists will not be allowed in that area because they were harrassing the Geisha's, it's unfortunate that those people ruined it for the rest of us who wanted to one day walk in that area. I've heard when it's cold/snowy there's an area where you can visit the snow monkeys that's on my list as well. Mahalo for showing your travel videos!!!
My wife and I were in Osaka, Kyoto and Nara back in 2018. I think those deer are hungry 24/7.š The Gion district in Kyoto is famous for its geisha. Glad that you and Aiden were able to walk through there, especially the older cobblestone section. Kyoto is famous for its inari sushi. Shinto shrines are guarded by stone figures of foxes. They were highly regarded for protecting rice storehouses from rodents. Thereās a mountain in Arashiyama, Kyoto where you can hike up to see monkeys. Itās a morning train ride from the city. Thereās a nice little onsen (hot spring) place at the foot of the mountain. Oh man, missing Japan more than ever.
