【沖縄 / 昭和レトロ】🌇与那原町の昭和時代📻(昭和博物館、軽便与那原駅舎、オリオン通り)【Petit OKINAWA PLUS!】

Haisai! So, Kana-san! Speaking of “Showa retro”, we went to an arcade in Okinawa City together before, and today we’re in Yonabaru! In fact, there are many places in Yonabaru where you can still feel the Showa era atmosphere!

– You came to Yonabaru Town before to report on the Tug-of-War festival, right? – That’s right! – And Izumi-san also appeared, right? – Yes, with Izumi-san! That’s right! It was when you were taking a break Kana!

That’s right! Due to childbirth! So I’m happy to be able to come to Yonabaru today! I’m kind of sorry… Like, every time it’s about Showa I’m calling you here…

– That’s true! – I guess you have the image of a Showa era woman!? – A Showa woman! ? – Yeah! – What! ? – But, you Vincent, are even more deeply rooted in the Showa era right!? – Yeah… that’s right… so what!? Anyway…

– But are there so many symbols of the Showa era here in Yonabaru? – Yes! There are so many! In fact, Yonabaru Town has long been a very prosperous transportation hub and industrial town, so there’s still a lot of it! So today, I’d like to take a look around!

Let’s start right away! Let’s Goya! Yonabaru Town is located in the southeastern part of the main island of Okinawa, and first light railway connecting Naha and Yonabaru was opened in 1914!

– So, before the war, it was the main artery of the industrial economy that connected the southeastern and central regions! – I see! So, today, let’s discover Yonabaru from the Showa era! And if you want to know about the Showa era, this is the place!

– Showa Museum! – That’s right! After you! – Ah! There’s a great atmosphere! – It’s written “Shhh!” here! Hello! – Hello! – Amazing! – Yeah! amazing! – Nice! Look at this old phone!

– Oh, that sound! – Even the door! – It also sounds like Showa! – You can hear the sound of Showa from the door too… My grandma too used to have this kind of phone at her house!

– In France too, there used to be black phones like that, but when I was a kid, they were gray! – Oh, really?

– That’s amazing! The shape! – I don’t even know how to use it! – Like this? – You speak in here? – Or the opposite? Who knows!

– We don’t know! How to use it! Which way is right? – No clue! Even though we were born in the Showa era! – Yes! Yes Yes Yes! – Well, the Showa era was very long so… – TRUE! – The Showa era was long!

– It’s true! Wow! amazing! – So many! There are so many accessories! – The characters are amazing! – Watching this makes me feel like a child again! – TRUE! Wow! It’s so cute! – Hello! – Hello! – Thank you! – Please!

We came here today to learn more about the Showa era in Yonabaru Town, and our first stop is here, at the Showa Museum. – So what is the concept of this museum? – It’s basically an antique shop!

– Antique shop and museum! – So, everything is on display and for sale! – That’s right! We also do leasing! Rental! – What made you start? – At first, I’m basically an antique fan! Basically, a collecting enthusiast! – Originally! – Yes, originally!

So, I’ve been collecting everything mainly in Nagoya for about 20 years, then as my mother is old, I came back. – So, are you originally from Yonabaru Town? – Yes Yes Yes! I came back, but couldn’t just leave everyhting behind

– All the things you’ve been able to collect! – So I thought I’d bring them back and show it to everyone! – What is it called the thing over there? – Amazing! A gramophone (Chikuonki)!

– Chikuwa (Japanese food name) ?? – No, a gramophone! – (Jap. Litt.) “Storing the sound” – Amazing! – Manually! Also, the sound quality is really old-fashioned, which is amazing! – Yes! It feels retro! Ah! “Asatoya Yunta”!

– Ah! A folk song! ? ? – Yes, folk song! – Yes! This is a song about the port of Naha! – I’m also interested in this corner! – Yes! This place is amazing! – What’s this?

– This is the reproduction of a candy store! – A candy store! Nice! – That’s right! There are many signs of various sweets! In this day and age, you don’t see candy shops very often anymore, speaking of what

– about things that are no longer there, I’ve heard there used to be an amusement park in Yonabaru. – Oh, right! There was an big amusement park, with a zoo, and things like go-karts. – What was this amusement park called? – “Yonabaru Tech”! It’s very famous!

– Sometimes you can still hear from the radio talking about it, saying “Tech”! – Yonabaru Tech! – Do you know what “Tech” means? – Technology? – Yes! – Tech was a place built in cooperation with a big manufacturer from mainland, here in Yonabaru.

– So technology! An abbreviation for technology! – They called in engineers, and it was the highest level at the time… So, at that time, the amusement park had the latest rides and such! It sounds like fun! It’s now turned into a golf course on top of the mountain, but it was pretty nice!

– Did you ever go at that time? – I went, yes! So, there were two entrances: the normal entrance, and the one from the top.

– From the peak you could ride, what’s the name… the thing you put your butt on when skiing! – Ah! A lift? – Yes! A lift! – Amazing!

– It would be so great if we could make something like that again, like “Yonabaru Super Tech” or what! – that would be so nice! We’ve experienced the Showa era quite a lot here, but I heard there are still many places in Yonabaru where you can feel it!

I’d like to visit those places too, so where should we go next? A long time ago, there was a rail-station in Yonabaru! There was a port here for Yanbaru (Northern Okinawa) ships,

And from there they went to southern areas, Itoman, Shuri, Naha, and as far as Kadena! – Oh, I see. – There is still that light railway station! – Well then, let’s go see it! – Let’s go!

– Thank you for having us in this wonderful place with an atmosphere that makes you feel like a kid again! – Thank you very much! – The bell! It really feels like a train station! – And it also looks like a station!

There is this old model of Yonabaru, and you can even see this railway! – It has a red tile roof! – Red tiles that are a symbol of Okinawa! – This is what the old atmosphere was like!

– Here are the remnants of that era! – Photos from that time! – Pre-war photos from the Showa era! – There are a lot of valuable documents! – Panels that explain the history of this place, so you can learn a lot!

As you mentioned earlier Vincent, there used to be a railway running in Okinawa! The route network was laid out in three directions from Naha to Kadena, Itoman, and here Yonabaru. It was called a “light railway” (keiben) and was smaller than a regular railway,

– so it was nicknamed “Kaybin” or “Kayven”. – It sounds like someone’s name! Like “Kevin”! This “Yonabaru Light Rail Station” was the first line to open in Okinawa in December 1914, connecting Naha and Yonabaru on the Yonabaru Line, and was the terminal station between Naha and Yonabaru.

It supported the lives and economy of Okinawan people! However, the facilities were destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa, the line disappeared, and it was discontinued in March 1945. That’s right. In fact, the pillars of the original building still remain outside, so you can feel the remnants of that time.

Time has passed, and then, based on the few valuable pictures and memories of elderly people who knew the time the Yonabaru Light Rail Station building was revived in its current form as an exhibition resource in the summer of 2014.

I see! Thanks to that we now have a lot of this valuable documents left! Actually, there is another placeI want to take you Kana here in Yonabaru, where you can really feel the Showa era,

– so let’s go! There too! – Yes! Because I’m a Showa woman! – A Showa woman, and a Showa man! – Let’s go! – Well then, let’s go! Chuchu! – Po Shu Poppo! – Poppopo!

Now, speaking of the Showa era in Yonabaru Town, this is the one and only Orion Street! There are really old izakayas here, and there used to be a movie theater, and there is also a goat soup shop now! Yonabaru Town originally flourished as a berth for Yanbaru ships

It is an area where sailors hang out at night to drink and the remnants of that time can still be seen in this Orion Street. There was a time when this area became a shuttered town with fewer and fewer shops,

But recently young people have started renovating the town opening new shops with new concepts. There is a lot of movement to revitalize the town, with very stylish atmospheres! It’s showing excitement again! There are rows of retro-style shops, with a unique atmosphere!

I’ve been looking into this as well, and here is a shop called “Hamajo”, which opened in August 2023. This place is filled with the passion of the owner, Mr. Yamashiro, and his brother, who run the establishment together. The interior has been stylishly renovated while retaining the charm of an old folk house,

With a calm and comfortable atmosphere so you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time there! The carefully selected Yachimun utensils collected by the owner, Mr. Yamashiro, enhance the delicious dishes even more, and the dishes that change daily are also recommended!

There are also counter seats, so even if you’re alone you can enjoy a relaxing meal or drink! – It was an episode where we could really enjoy the Showa era! – It made me realize once again how rich the Showa era was!

And while retaining the atmosphere of the past, in this folk house built over 60 years ago, so of course in the Showa era young people are now working hard with shops like this in this wonderful atmosphere.

– To revitalize the town! – Yes! To liven it up! – I think it’s great that the’re doing so! There are so many shops like this popping up these days!

– So, how was it today? – It was very valuable to hear the story of Yonabaru at the museum! – That’s right! There were a lot of storiesthat people don’t know about,

Like Yonabaru Tech! I knew that there was an amusement park here a long time ago, but I didn’t know much about it… – Also, we could see all kinds of Showa era accessories, not only from Okinawa. And the station! – Yes!

Well, tmany people who don’t know that there was a train in Okinawa in the past, so we learned a lot today, – and it really felt like a time leap. – It’s true! It was fun!

– Well, it’s only natural that we, who were born in the Showa era, were in charge today! – If it’s Showa, leave it to us! Well then, everyone… See You Shisa!
