Let’s go to Enoshima in Kamakura: Roller Coaster Train Ride & Money-Saving Tips!

Hi, I’m Atsuko.😘I’m at the Ofuna Station of Shonan Monorail. I am going to buy a one-day pass for the monorail and visit Enoshima! Oh, here comes a cute train! This train also has cute seats inside! The monorail is a popular train that runs through tunnels, curves, and steep grades… it’s like an attraction!

Let’s go! Wow, I feel like I’m flying! The maximum speed is 75km/h! A sharp curve! Looking down, it’s pretty scary! It’s really fun, like a roller coaster! The station has a kind of thin wall on the underside. Wow, it’s a pretty steep downhill! Kamakurayama Tunnel

Arrived at Nishikamakura station, let’s get off the train here. Close by, there is a shrine dedicated to the husband of the goddess Enoshima! Interesting, so this is how the underside of a monorail looks. If you turn the image upside down, you can see a train running in the sky.🤣

The shrine we are about to visit is dedicated to a five-headed dragon! In the past, the dragon caused trouble for villagers in this area. One day, the dragon fell in love with the goddess of Enoshima, but she initially refused due to the dragon’s past misdeeds.

Realizing his mistakes, the dragon changed his ways and eventually married the goddess, becoming the protective deity of the area. Next, let’s visit the goddess of Enoshima! The monorail takes 14 minutes from the first stop Ofuna to the last stop Shonan Enoshima! You can see the sea in the distance! Mejiro Yamashita Station

After passing through the second tunnel, we will arrive at Shonan Enoshima Station. The station platform is on the 5th floor, nice view.🥰 Whoa, there’s an observation deck. Mt. Fuji is visible today, lucky! Enoshima is a 15-minute walk from Shonan Enoshima Station

To Enoshima Station on the Enoden Line, it is about a 1-minute walk First, let’s go to the Tourist Information Center. You can buy a special ticket here!👍 A set of admission tickets to several facilities at a reduced price! I purchased a 1,500 yen ticket to visit four attractions.(≒$10.25) Hi😍Fuji-san, nice white hat!

We’ve arrived at Enoshima. Whenever I come here, I’m always drawn to the smell of seafood! The bronze torii gate has stood here for almost 200 years, even against the sea winds. The dragon pattern is so cool! Oh, is there a path this way? I wonder where this road leads to.

Ah, it turns out it leads to the beach. Fishing with a view of Mt. Fuji would be so nice! The red torii gate is the entrance to the Enoshima Shrine. Enoshima shrine is made up of three different shrines enshrining three sister goddesses.

To get to these shrines, you have to climb the stairs, but there is also an escalator! This escalator, nicknamed Escar, has three escalators, all for 360 yen. (≒$2.45) But I’ll ride with the ticket I just purchased. Here they worship the third sister, Tagitsuhime no Mikoto.

And there is a square on the way to the next shrine The Enoshima Yacht Harbor, visible from here, was constructed for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The second sister, Ichikishimahime no Mikoto is enshrined here. This goddess is said to bring various blessings.

And after climbing the third escalator, you will arrive at the highest point on Enoshima! The other shrine is a bit further ahead, so let’s make a stop at another place before heading there Oh, they sell octopus crackers, let’s eat! Takosenbei (octopus crackers) 500 yen (≒$3.41)

This is a cracker made by pressing 2 to 3 octopuses under 1 ton of pressure. Tastes like pressed and crispy octopus tempura! Birds seem to like octopus crackers too. And there is a beautiful Japanese-Western garden here, let’s go see it! This garden is created by Englishman Samuel Cocking in 1882.

Looks like spring is already here.🥰 That’s a sea candle, now let’s go to the observation deck of that tower. Admission to the observatory is 500 yen (≒$3.41), I used the one-day pass Wow, the sky looks wide. Mt. Fuji can be seen very well here.

The height of the sea candle is 41.75m (101.56m above sea level) Oh, that’s the bridge I walked on this morning. From this observation deck, you can take the stairs down, but it is a bit scary. The city of Fujisawa, where Enoshima is located, has established sister-city partnerships with various cities.

Friendship symbols inspired by each city have been created. This is the plaza built to commemorate the sister-city relationship with Miami Beach city. It is not a beach, but you can enjoy a beautiful view. This place will be beautifully illuminated around 5 PM. Looking forward to it!

Now, we’re at the shrine dedicated to Tagirihime no Mikoto, the eldest of Enoshima’s three goddess sisters! Perhaps the wife of the dragon god is the goddess here! ❤ Now it’s time for lunch! I kept my stomach empty to have lunch at this restaurant.

It is a long-established restaurant that has been in business for 140 years. Wow, there are so many turban shells! Enjoy this breathtaking view from my seat🥰 Mt. Fuji, let’s have lunch together.

Among the many delicious dishes, I ordered the Enoshima Don Teisyoku (bowl of rice topped with turban shell and egg) for 1170 yen (≒$8) If you have room in your stomach and can afford it, I recommend crab miso soup!

It’s full of turban shells, that’s why there were so many turban shells in front of the store. Turban shells are a specialty of Enoshima. Although they may not look great, they are delicious! I wonder if that boat is going to get turban shells.

By the way, you can get a 5% discount when you show your one-day pass at the checkout!😁 Hmmm, steep stairs, Enoshima is full of stairs! But you can see this view if you patiently go down the stairs!

This is Chigogafuchi. It was created when the seafloor was uplifted by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Beyond Chigogafuchi, there is the Enoshima Iwaya Cave. Without a one-day pass, you need to pay a 500 yen admission fee. (≒$3.42) In the caves, they lend you candles. Let’s explore!

It is said that this cave extends to a cave at the foot of Mount Fuji. Really? Wow, it’s super dark. Ghost-san, I’m sorry if I stepped on your foot. It is said that this is the birthplace of Enoshima Shrine Did the goddess appear from here?

There are two caves here. Let’s go to the other one! I heard there is a dragon god at the end of the cave… wow, beautiful!😍 There he is! Konnichiwa😁 I heard that if you clap your hands in front of the Dragon God, something will happen.

But nothing happened! Ah! Guess I clapped too soon😅 Whoa😅You made me jump! What did you say? Here, Chigogafuchi is known for the beauty of the sunset sinking beyond Mt Fuji. It has been selected as one of the 50 Scenic Views of Kanagawa Prefecture. Let’s visit here again during sunset!

See you later 🥰 Fuji-san😁 Great. Looks like we’re here just in time. Beautiful Kamehameha. Personally, if you want to see the sunset in Enoshima, I highly recommend Chigogafuchi. The waves rolling ashore, and Mount Fuji bathing in the hues of the setting sun create a truly exquisite scene.

The enchanting blend of a stunning sunset, the sea, and Mount Fuji is the major allure of Enoshima and Kamakura, wouldn’t you agree? The night highlight in Enoshima is Samuel Cocking Garden. I wonder how the sunset looks from the Sea Candle🥰 Wow, it’s beautiful, but there are a lot of people.

But you can even see the birds flying around Mt. Fuji from here The moon looks like the sun. The illumination here is called the “Jewel of Shonan,” one of the three major illuminations in the Kanto area. You can see it from the end of November to February every year.

This year marks the 24th edition. Nevertheless, it must have been challenging to decorate it with so many lights. If it were me, I might end up leaving the lights up all year because decorating again would be a hassle. 🤣 Thank you for showing us such beautiful illumination!

How was our trip around Enoshima today? If you enjoyed the Atsuko tour, please subscribe to my channel, hit the like button, and leave a comment 😘 I’ll be delighted, and probably dive into the sea to catch some shellfish and turban shells and prepare them for you.

But I’m sorry if you get a stomach ache.🤣 I post videos that are useful for your travels in Japan, so please check them out when you have time😍 Where shall we go together next? Please look forward to our next trip. 🤗Until then have a lovely day and stay safe😁

I took the Shonan Monorail, known as a roller coaster train, to Enoshima in Kamakura!
Summer is the best season to visit Enoshima, but winter is also very nice!
A day pass is convenient for sightseeing in Enoshima.
I purchased one that allows me to see the escalator, Enoshima Iwaya, Sea Candle, and the nighttime illumination of Samuel Cocking Garden for 1,500 yen,
The price was 360 yen less than the regular price for all the facilities!
Moreover, you can use the facilities as many times as you like, so it was great to enjoy both the daytime and evening views at the Sea Candle!
I hope you will visit Enoshima on your next holiday!

  1. WOW! Another stunning video as usual! That pass is a great bargain, seeing how much you saved with it.
I was a bit taken aback by the western style garden (at the shrines), but it was indeed very beautiful and full of color. Spring is just around the corner, it seems. AND the lights at night were AMAZING. It was like it was a major holiday, with everything almost overly decorated to celebrate!
Also- I always wondered about Japan's aging population, and how many shrines have SO MANY steps to go up. It's nice to see the escalators there at these three, and how they can still go there much more easily!
Thanks so much for sharing this with us! 😄

  2. Hello. Glad to see your new video. It is, as always, very interesting. And Shonan's Pearl is simply something incredible. Thank you for your work.

  3. thank you so much!! this was so insightful. i didn't know there was a cute monorail in enoshima, thankfully found your video before going 😆
I'll definitely try to ride the monorail! thanks so much, have a nice dayyy
