FIRST TIME eating Nasi Goreng (Indonesian STREET FOOD in Jakarta)

We’re doing a street food tour. All street food. And there’s no better place than Jakarta when we eat all of it on a food tour day. You know, it’s good. there’s literally street food everywhere here. I can handle it, though.

And today we are trying some of the best of the best. And even though we trudged through a ton of traffic, never seen anything like this. it was well worth the wait. I’m mad that we’ve never eaten this before. And then I tried something. Geez… To be fair, that is not nearly as much money as it looks like. In Indonesia, If you’re a millionaire, it means you have about 100 bucks on hand. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Alright, we made it and I’m hungry. Which is probably last time I’m going to say that today.

I’m not that hungry. I was like, “Hey babe, let’s cross.” I turn around. He’s already across the street because there’s chickens. Where there’s animals, you will find me guaranteed every time, even at the expense of protecting my lovely lady. Hi. For two, okay? Where do you want to sit?

Wherever’s fine. This one? Yeah, We’ll just do one. Anything else? No, that will be all. Thank you so much. Do we put this on this? Yeah, well, it depends on your need.. If you like, you can pour it. Or, just keep it and I can bring a spoon.

Oh, okay, great. thanks. We’re at Mie Ayam Gongdangia We’re doing a street food tour, but sometimes street food is served inside restaurants like the one, still very street food-esque. We’re sitting on stools low to the ground and eating with wooden chopsticks. Most of the restaurants we’re going to today

Are the name of the restaurant is the name of the food we’re trying. So this is mie ayam. Which is a Chinese noodle with chicken. So it’s like a chicken noodle soup, almost. We got the combo with the chicken balls, the chicken and the chicken wontons. steamed. So much to try. I know.

Try a wonton first. Yeah, they’re kind of falling out. Mm. Super just like mild flavor, but the wonton wrappers. Like nice and thin and steamed really well. So it’s not too chewy, but nothing like crazy flavor-wise, yet. I’m going to try some of this chicken. Mmm. That is good.

The chicken’s marinated in, like a soy sauce, it tastes like. With some other spices, but it’s really flavorful. Bok choy, steamed bok choy. One bite?! That’s what you always say to me. One bite? Hmm, this is good. Is it? Hm-mm, that was a good chicken ball.

Normally, those are just like flavorless ground meat that’s been steamed, but this had flavor. And it kind of had like a little bit of char, almost. So there was some texture besides just steamed meat. Mm. So I love flour noodles, or egg noodles, best

Over a rice flour, and these are made with a wheat flour. So it’s kind of like in between, but they’re definitely more like egg-y in texture than the rice noodles are, which are normally like, slimier and like, thinner. But these are like nice and hearty. So this dish is Indonesian in nature,

But it is influenced by the Chinese who brought the noodles over. And then I think the Indonesians just kind of made it their own with all the chicken, and the sauces, and the flavors. But I do love the noodles. They look good. They’re very good. You literally picked up all of it. That’s the perfect bite. The noodles are like nice and buttery. I don’t know if there’s actually butter in this, but that’s what it tastes like to me. I think it’s just the broth that it sits in. These are like the world’s longest noodles. They never end.

It’s pretty good sized portion for one meal and we ate all of it. So I think we are off to a pretty good start so far. Agreed. Thank you. Hello. Where you from? California. Oh, California. Smells like coffee in here. It smells good. So in reality, we probably could just go down a big street that sells all street food and get a lot of the food. We’re getting today. But we want to get the best of the best.

So we’re traveling around a little bit and just honestly, taking Grabs everywhere. It’s just easier. And as always, air conditioned. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow. Oh, awesome. Thank you so much. Oh, it smells really good, actually, yeah. So another popular street food spot is a warteg, which is a warung

And the word tegal mixed together. They do it a lot in Indonesia. They like mix the two words to make like a shorter, more fun word to say. So warteg is the word. There’s a ton of them around here, but this one is it’s open 24 hours

And they basically just serve central Javanese food, which is where Tegal is. It’s in the center of the island of Java where we are located. So they serve central Javanese food. I had no idea what to get. I just knew that they served it with a huge thing of rice, which they did.

So we asked what was popular and they said the chicken and it smells like a peanut sauce. And then some guy recommended it looks like bean sprouts and tofu, which I love bean sprouts. So it’s smells really good and it’s kind of just like buffet style, like

They cook up everything ahead of time and then you just point to what you want. It’s going to try the sauce first. Oh my God, that is so good. I didn’t think I was going to like it, to be honest. It’s really good. It’s like uh… It’s not that peanuty.

It’s kind of spicy. It’s like gravy, almost. But like, Asian flavored. It’s like a teriyaki gravy. That’s what it is like. It’s really good. I think this is like fried chicken. Mm. Yeah. The sauce is so good. Okay, This like, tofu, thing. I took way to big of a bite. It’s unspectacular.

It’s not bad. There’s something familiar about it. Maybe like lemongrass or something, but it’s just bean sprouts and tofu, It’s okay, it’s a good side. Adds a little texture. So fun fact about the wartegs is that their run by Tegalian families, families from Tegel and they rotate.

Who works at the restaurant in town versus who works on the farm. You get like one three month or four month period, and then you rotate with like your brothers or sisters or your cousins so you don’t get bored. And then the place is always run really well. That’s so cool.

Yeah. Wow. I didn’t know that. She did not tell me that. It was very… It was so loud out there. It’s literally one of the best fun facts we’ve ever had Just saying… Oh my gosh…(horn sounds) That is the definition of traffic right there. It’s literally like people are driving backwards.

Driver: Oh My God. We’ve never seen anything like it. No, this is… Wow, Thank you. Sorry about that. Oh my gosh. Right here? Yes. Terima kasih (thank you). Yeah, yeah, thank you. Thank you. No, thank you. Thank you. Yeah, this is good. Okay, okay, we’re here. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Oh my goodness. That was so nuts. It was like a funnel trying to go through a straw. Yes. Yes. Oh my gosh. Hello. Yeah? Can we just get one order of Sate Padang? so much sauce. Wow, look at that fancy little bag?

How much is it? I don’t know how much it is, so I just gave him money. Thank you so much. Uh…Terima kasih (thank you). This packaging is so cool. Look at this. It’s like in a little like, paper. There’s a lot. Remember? Nate loves satay, but hates that you only get like, three,

Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten… Ten satay padang from Sate Padang Ajo Ramon That was a fun one to say. Alright, here, you get to try it. That is so cool how they twist that into a to-go bag. Yeah. Oh my gosh, it’s so hot. Hot…like hot to the touch.

Hot to hold. I feel like… I’m going to just unleash this and it’s all just going to fall, and that scares me. Oh my gosh. Look at that, like gooeyness in there. Yum. Is there something else? Other than satay in there? It looks like potatoes or something… It does look like potatoes.

Look at this. So it’s seasoned beef or beef tongue, depending upon how they serve it here. Seasoned beef is like a huge understatement when you see it on the grill, it’s cooked before they put all the sauce on it. It is literally, it looks like about five coats of seasoning on it.

And then they just douse it in the sauce like it looks like a soup in here or porridge, but it’s just sauce. It’s good, It’s getting like a little spicey. My mouth is on fire, I can’t even begin to imagine what the spices are. But you can taste them, and they’re very good.

And what’s in the sauce? It doesn’t taste as peanuty. I didn’t say it was peanuty… usually satay sauce is peanut. Oh! Yeah, this is different. It’s like a curry almost. It’s a curry? Curry-like sauce. That explains why it doesn’t taste like peanuts.

But now I know that I understand the curry flavor profile a little bit better. It’s very good. It’s really thick sauce, too. I would…I think I don’t really like the meat, though. Yeah, it tastes good, but I like the texture. It’s really chewy. What the heck is that?

I’m going to eat it. Yeah. I think you should. I don’t know what it is. Mm. Maybe a potato. I don’t know. It doesn’t have a lot of flavor, but it just takes on the flavor of the sauce. It could be a potato. Very soft.

I don’t know. It’s in here, so I ate it. It’s spicy, though. The longer this goes, the spicier it gets. Aw, man. On your shirt? Aw, right on my shirt. Question…sorry. What is this? Compact rice. Oh, that’s so interesting. Okay, perfect. Thank you very much. Thank you.

Now that I would have literally never guessed, it’s rice. What? I mean, they said it’s rice. So I imagine somehow they mash it up and then make these cubes out of it and then they put the sauce on it. I literally never would have guessed that.

But it kind of explains why the flavor was pretty neutral. Terima kasih (thank you). As we’ve been eating here, we noticed a lot of cars coming in and a lot of people just get the food and eat right inside their car and then they just bring the plates back.

Kind of funny, especially because I think this is a restaurant right here, I need ice cream. Yeah, you’re welcome. Should I get white coffee, peanut nugget? Or spec-u-lous?? Found a really highly reviewed ice cream place just like 5 minutes down the road. Oh My God. Oh my God, I got white coffee nugget and peanuts. It’s like a white coffee snickers. These are like fresh peanuts.

This literally just tastes like a whole peanut. Oh my God, this is good. That is like crazy good. It’s like such fresh flavors. Okay, we’re looking for ba-ba… Ba-bur… Ba-brr… Bubur…Ayam…Barito… I have no idea what I’m doing. This is like…we finally got to the real street food after 5 p.m..

That’s when they all opened. Hi. Can I get…just one bowl of Babur ayam? Thank you. Can we sit here? Okay, great thanks. Terima kasih. I’m gonna get my notes out. Cause I don’t actually know. This looks good though. So far. Really liking the food on this street food tour.

Sometimes we try stuff and it’s like, that was good, but not something I would normally like. I actually would normally like a lot of this stuff. This place is called Bubur Ayam Barito. And it’s just one of the stalls. And you just…

They have like a banner you can see, you know, we’re getting back more. And we’re getting Babur ayam which is chicken rice porridge or chicken con…con-gee…con-gey. We’ve honestly seen this everywhere in the past three years and we’ve never tried it. I don’t know how it’s possible, so we’re trying it today.

This one looks amazing. It has shredded chicken, like cilantro, shallots. And what makes this place special is they put cheese sticks on it, so it’s kind of like a fun, crispy little cheese stick. It doesn’t really taste like cheese. It’s hot… It’s hot. This is really good. I’m mad that we’ve never eaten this before. It tastes like chicken noodle soup, where it’s like really hearty chicken. and it’s like rotisserie chicken, almost. And then the crispy shallots add crunch, plus all of this on top. I think…well I’m going to mix it all together.

But I think all of it together, it makes it like a lot of different textures and flavors. I honestly am a fan. Like, I might order this for breakfast tomorrow. This is one of the few Indonesian dishes that’s not spicy. I have no idea what this is. There’s no label. Ooh, yeah.

Start small, start small, start small. Oh, yeah. that’s delicious. It’s like a sweet soy sauce or it’s, like, thick. So kind of like teriyaki sauce, almost. They thicken it up. Very sweet, but very good. Hmm, what is that? Oh my God, there’s like… There’s fried dough in here. It’s really good.

It’s not sweet, but it’s just like dough, you know? So it’s kind of a little sweet. What the heck? There’s an egg. I just popped an egg inside here. I don’t even know where that came from. All right, let’s. Let’s mash this all up. Let’s get crazy… Alright, I’m guessing… I guess there’s an egg in here. Now I’m going to try all this together. The egg doesn’t really add any flavor.

I think it just kind of like, adds texture to, like, mash it all together more. But I love everything on this right now. I’m putting more in here. All right, You got to get in here. I know, I can always tell when you like something, because I never eat it. Mm-hmm.

It tastes like there’s green chilies in it. You know those like roasted green chilies, that like, People put in eggs sometimes. Yeah. That’s what it tastes like. I love the cheesy chips. It’s like, uh… It’s tastes like Funyuns in the dish? Yeah. So delicious. I really like that.

Favorite meal of the day so far. Really? Mm-hmm. I love it. I like it here. It’s kind of like Bangkok for me. Like it’s big. It’s crazy…it’s chaotic, but I like it. It’s clean. I feel safe walking at night. People are friendly. Good food. Gulai Tikungan? Yes. Yeah, just one. One? Yeah. Thank you. Did you see them laugh when we said we wanted to eat here? They laughed? At us, yeah. Cause they’re like…what are you doing here? Probably. We are at Gulai Tikungan. Did I get it right? Yeah…Yes!!

And essentially that stands for the junction where they make curry. So it’s like anywhere from 4 to 10 stalls, just all making the same thing. It’s all this curry. And that’s why you come here. There are different side dishes and it’s just basically to dip in the curry.

Like that’s why people are here. I’m trying the meat and the rice and curry, because it looks like you’re supposed to eat it together. Mmm. It’s very good. I don’t know how to describe curry. It’s like, very well seasoned. It’s not spicy at all.

The curry is also a little runner than I am used to. I don’t know. I feel like it’s a good late night dish and that’s why they sell it… They sell it at this time. One thing that’s really interesting is… they eat with spoons a lot here.

Not really like chopsticks or even forks mostly spoons. Mmm. The chips are good. I love prawn chips. This, with the curry, is really good too. It’s like dried prawn, like shrimp, and they’re delicious. Even my parents like them. Hmm. the meat is like mutton. So it’s not like the best piece of meat.

But it’s… It’s not super chewy. So we’ve both liked every single meal we’ve tried, but… It seems like every other meal. One of us likes it more… So that’s the person who finishes it. it’s like working out well, to like, save some room for the next meal every time. It’s crazy out here.

We’re not night people. We’re usually at home in bed by now. We’re still out halfway through the food tour. All these motorbikes is insane. There’s literally, like, hundreds. It’s this Roti baker back here. Yeah, Yeah. That’s where we’re going. Thank you. Thank you. I wrote it down. I hope that’s okay. Ah, chocolate? Yes. Mineral water? Yeah, cold please, thank you. We’re at Roti Bakar Eddy, which is actually a chain now in Indonesia. But this is the original and we got roti with chocolate. Now we’ve eaten a lot of roti.

And this is not what I think of, when I think of Roti Roti Roti is something usually I think that’s like almost like a pastry, like that’s fried. This looks like a sandwich that my mom made me to take to school for lunch. But with chocolate,

I also don’t know what the chocolate is, because it doesn’t look like Nutella, which I know is not necessarily chocolate and it doesn’t look like chocolate syrup, It’s so good. Give me a piece. Hm-mm. Please. No, not yet. Please. I’m still enjoying it. No…

Like I know I said, it just looks like a sandwich with chocolate on it. That’s literally exactly what it is, but it’s very nicely toasted and the chocolate is just like so warm and delicious, Hmm. So, fun back story on this, actually. Growing up, my best friend Sammy, she always got white bread.

It wasn’t toasted, but just white bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles. And that was like sometimes her like lunch sandwich. So Nate was joking about the chocolate, but my friend literally had that. And it’s actually a Dutch thing. We just met a kid in the Philippines who was telling us about…

This like most popular meal is white bread with butter and these chocolate sprinkles. And I forget what they call them, but Indonesia used to be a Dutch colony. So this is all starting to come together here. It was all information that like…

Was not research, but just kind of clicked when we came here… Oh dang… Oh, this is totally chocolate sprinkles, too. Is it really? Yeah, look at that. This is good…(laughter) Now I need a glass of milk. I know they don’t sell it though. You can get combo’s.

So we just got the standard, which is one flavor. But if you get two or three flavors combined, they’re good. It’s like salty, almost. Okay they just kind of … Prep all the bread with all the chocolate. I think that’s probably the most popular one. And they just have them all set up

And then they just grill em’ when it’s time to eat them. That’s why they’re so nice and warm. Terima kasih (thank you) Terima kasih (thank you) Thank you, guys. Thank you, you two. Thank you. Terima kasih. That was amazing. Good timing. Hello. Feels good in here. Thank you.

Driver: How long are you in Jakarta? One week. Driver: Only one? Yeah. Nate: How long are you in Jakarta? Hmmm… 43 years. 43 years, that’s awesome. It’s a good place. We like it. Yeah, we like Jakarta. Yeah, we like Jakarta. This place is over 18,000 reviews. Wow. Seen this tea literally every single restaurant we’ve gone to today. I’m really not a big tea drinker, but cold drinks are hard to come by and this one is in the fridge with ice and it’s actually ice cold. Is it sweet?

Yeah, it’s not as sweet as sweet tea, but it is sweet. But it’s just a very simple tea. You think it’s sweet? That is so sweet. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s that sweet. It tastes like the sweet tea at McDonald’s. No. You know what it tastes like? Wow, I’ve almost drank the whole thing. Just tasting, like testing it right now. It tastes like boba tea without the boba.

Oh yeah, it does. Like exactly like that. Without the milk too. Yeah. And without the milk. Yeah, that’s probably what they do, it’s probably just condensed milk and boba tea. Yeah. Okay. So we had a tea without Boba and without milk. That’s what it is.

The nice thing about Indonesian is you can kind of learn the words pretty quickly. So Goreng is fried, nasi is rice, so this is fried rice and that’s exactly what it is. They fry it in this huge wok with like a ton of spices. And what we came here for

Is the Nasi Goreng Kambing, which is goat. We’re gonna try goat meat. I don’t know if we’ve ever had goat meat before, so it’s a little darker in color. To other rice, because of the sauce that they use.

And it’s, uh, like a sweet soy sauce that they use to fry the rice in. Hmm. It’s really flavorful. it seems really simple, like just the sauce, the rice, and the meat. But all together it makes like a really, like, it’s like a good fall dish, almost.

Like you get, like those, nutty kind of flavors with it. The meat’s really good. It like, you can tell, it just takes on the flavor of the sauce that it’s made in. and it has that yellow curry flavor Yeah. that’s been present in a lot of dishes we’ve had today.

Is that yellow curry… And that’s what it tastes like. It’s good. But… Can you believenhow much rice they’re making up there? Do you think that… Do you think they go through all that in a night? Or they go through that and more? That and more. That’s crazy. Terima kasih. Terima kasih. Bye.

We’re at Warmindo Abang Adek. This is the finale, and it seems fitting that we’re ending with the food that we have by far and away eaten the most of over our three years of travel. Instant noodles. It’s a very popular street food here.

But the difference here is that you order by the number of chilies from 1 to 100. 1- 1-0- 1-0-0 Who does that? I have no idea how many I’m going to get. Alright, I’m going. We order here? Yeah. I don’t know how many to get. What do you think I should get?

I don’t know, maybe 50. 50? I’m going to get 50. Great. Thank you. Whoo, look at that. Is that dramatic enough? Yeah. Oh no…I don’t want to litter. It was fast. Thus, instant noodles, I guess. Ahhh. I see what appears to be a fair amount of chili seeds in there. I can’t tell if this is the right amount or if I’m gonna regret this in about… 10 seconds Before I’ve even eaten this, Alicia’s like, “should we just get 100?” Like maybe I should try this first. I feel like this bird behind Alicia is just screaming for me not to do this. “Don’t try it.” I mean, Where we at? Spicy! So far…,yeah, spicy, right? Spicer than Mark Wiens? It’s like, right up there. It’s right up there with Mark Wiens. It’s that spicy that doesn’t happen right away. It takes a second. And like, the more it sits, it gets spicier and spicier and still getting spicier. I can handle it, though.

I don’t know if I should do 100, though. I’m like, super torn just because I want to say “I did it.” But my lips on fire, so I don’t know if I should do it. Water doesn’t help, but I’m going to drink some.

There’s no need to waste pasta just to say you did it. Whoo…yeah. I don’t think you’ll be able to eat the whole thing. I can eat this whole thing. It is hot. Like what does it taste like? Does it just taste like spicey?

Honestly, for like, a split second, you get, like, tomato-base sauce, but then, like, the heat just takes over. It’s honestly still getting more overwhelming. I can’t believe it. Whoo…(laughter). starting to sweat. I think I need to jump in a pool… Wow. Who could finish this?

I literally took one bite. I don’t think I can take another bite. That’s wild. There’s also a reason we did this last, because I was fairly certain that with the spice level I chose, I would not be able to taste anything for the rest of the tour. So we did this last for a reason. There’s a little freezer over there. I’m thinking about jumping in it.

I’m usually pretty adventurous, when it comes to eating stuff, but spicy stuff recently I’ve had a limit. We went to the pharmacy for her heartburn, I literally just got two medications for heart burn right now. It’s really embarrassing, but… I knew this was going to be too spicy.

I wanted Nate to try whatever he wanted, cause he likes trying spicy stuff. So I just, bowed out on this one. But I have never seen Nate react like this. He’s never had something that’s too spicy for him not to even eat another bite. He’s like, he drank the whole water already. He’s dying. He’s, like, sweating. My lips are on fire. I can’t feel the lower half of my face. Are you okay? Oh yeah, I’m fine. It’s hot though. You really can’t eat another bite? I’ve never really like…met my match. When it comes to spicy food, I’ve always been able to tolerate it to an extent, but I think today that has changed.

I hate wasting food. Like I really don’t like to. I’m going to take one more bite, but I can’t eat another one after that. This is just because I hate wasting food. Try level 50 Spicy Instant Noodles Now I’m done. You want take away? Huh? Take away? No. Terima kasih. All right, so we got… That like actually scared me. Hard drinks have been really hard to come by. What kind of drinks are hard to come by? Cold drinks. You said, “hard drinks are hard to come by.” Oh gosh… The filling… No, not the filling. Filling…or like… Why do I keep saying filling? Filling, filling, filling… Get it out. Tegalian families?? Tegal families? Oops, cutting off my head…

Ow…I bit my lip again. What do you want? Are you okay. You literally look like you’re crying. I feel like it…I literally, like… I can’t distinguish, like, my lips from, like, my face right now. You’re lips honestly, look really red. They feel on fire. I feel like I’m having, like, an allergic reaction. I just wanna like, do a cannon ball in a pool of milk.

  1. You have to try the rawon rice and sweet martabak… I hope you always have fun in Jakarta 😊🎉

  2. a thing that rarely mentioned, is that some South East Asian countries are using phonetic language, spelled exactly like how they're written. and luckily, Indonesian language is one of them.

this makes learning how to pronounce them become easier (if not much more), and at the same time, drastically reduce any chance of mispronounce since the possible variations become really limited due to being phonetic… (might even be able to spell them with almost 100% accuracy before you guys even know what each words mean)

with exceptions of some assimilated/borrowed words, for the vowels, in general, they usually go like this:

    – a, like the a of delta, or when dentist asks us to open mouth and say "aaaah"

    – i, like both i of India

    – u, like both u of Zulu

    – o, like the o of bravo, tango

    – e might be trickier than others, since there are 2 variations, which both are present in English word "enter". it'll take time to learn which ones using the first "e", and which ones using the second "e"

most consonants are more or less the same as English. maybe some of these:

    – c, like children, cheese, choose, but without the "h" (we rarely have words that stick c and h together)

    – g, like gaga

    – Indonesian "r", personally, I'd say it's similar to Spanish or Russian. it's a clear "r" where the tongue vibrates at upper palate

  3. Warteg = warung tegal. Tegal is a small town is central java.

A lot of Indonesian foods are named after a province/city.

Other example: Nasi Padang (Padang Rice). Padang is provincial capital of West Sumatera.

Other authentic Indonesian foods: gudeg, martabak, soto, sate padang, nasi padang, rawon, otak-otak, siomay, empek-empek, kerupuk emping, gado gado.

  4. that is rice cake in sate padang , a potato look-a-like… actually if you eat sate padang in its origin place, west sumatra, the meat is more tender and it is even not spicy… you should visit west sumatra!
