Day Trip from Tokyo: Kamakura! Top places to go to in Kamakura!
What’s so special about Kamakura anyway well let me show You good everyone today we’re in Kamakura Kamakura is one of the best spots to go to for a short day trip out of Tokyo especially if you want something totally different from the hustle and bustle of the city I’m so excited to show you around my name is
Hannah and this is what you Hannah do Kamakura wo what you Hannah do what you Hanah do when they come for you a lot is to be said about Kamakura first it has amazing history behind it being the place where Japan’s first Samurai government was established in
The 12th century as granted by the Japanese emperor if I explain the whole history behind it it would have to be its own video because it’s super interesting but also quite long so yeah second it feels like a smaller Kyoto because it has a lot of shrines and
Temples concentrated into such a small area and lastly it’s only an hour by train from Tokyo but it has a totally different atmosphere and Vibe having its own Coastal area shrines and temples plus surfing at the beach such a cool combination anyway let’s get to the list
Number one meetu in or originally meguin was founded as a religious retreat in the late hyen period so around the year 794 to year 1192 but soon became a part of the much larger zeni Temple and served as sort of like a temple guest house for many many years until zeni
Temple was dismantled following the Magi Restoration in 1868 it later became a Zen temple of the rinai sect and was founded by a powerful Statesman named UGI nikata its Nick name is aisera which translates to hydrangea Temple which it is most famous for in June when the
Hydrangeas are in full bloom but it is also extremely beautiful in Autumn this Temple is not by far the biggest temple in Kamakura but something about it just hits different the Landscaping is incredible and the way it has been maintained is immaculate as I’m walking through the
Back Gardens of the temple it’s so beautiful the Landscaping in and around this Temple is spectacular everything is so well-kept and now that the colors are changing from green to Red it’s even more beautiful I’m enjoying so much my eyes are just going everywhere it’s so beautiful mangu in is also well known
For this particular window and when I saw it for the first time my jaw dropped I was completely mesmerized by it the window created a perfect frame for the garden across of it so much Beauty and depth I gasped a little when I saw the window boy I would love to see that
Every day when I wake up on to the next place Kamakura most important Shinto Shrine turaka hachimangu sudaa hachimangu was founded in year 1063 by minamoto yodoshi but was moved and enlarged to where it is now by minamoto yoru the founder and first Shogun of the Kamakura government
Government what is a Shogun and what is the Shogun It Anyway a Shogun is basically the most senior Samurai a military ruler and the Shogun it is where the Shogun conducts politics or the government of the Shogun Kamakura is important because this is where minamoto Yuro set up base because of its
Strategic location being surrounded by Hills on three sides and the ocean in the South he also chose Kamakura because it was associated with his ancestors and haiman the the patron god of the minamoto family were all enshrined in suruga hachimangu making it extremely sacred and extraordinary the deified
Spirits of Emperor Olin and Empress jingu are also enshrined here lots of History to be learned here so if you’re really into Japanese history especially history about the samurai sudaka hachimangu is definitely a place to visit there’s also the turaka museum in the compound if you want to learn more
About the history and culture of Kamakura I still have so much to say about Tura hachimangu but let’s move on to the next place number three huji at first I thought the entrance to this Temple was a little underwhelming but as soon as I entered I was floored the choice and
Variety of plants and foliage the placement stunning anyway Hui was founded in 1334 by priest tenan eeko it was the family Temple of the ashikaga Andi Clans and it was founded to pray for the soul of ashikaga ioki Grandfather of ashikaga Taki the first Shogun of the ashikaga shogunate the
Ashikaga family’s ashes are also said to be buried in the large cave at the west side of the temple hokokuji is famous for various reasons but its most famous attraction is its Bamboo Garden which is why it’s also known as the bamboo Temple the Bamboo Grove is just behind the main
Hall and is now densely covered with over 2,000 bamboo it’s only a fraction of the size of arashi in Kyoto but still really beautiful the path even leads to a small tea house where you can enjoy a cup of matcha while savoring the view of the bamboo
Groove this Temple is gorgeous it’s much smaller compared to a lot of other temples in the area but it’s so peaceful I personally really loved it because of its Gardens and with all the variety of plants it’s sure to look beautiful in any season now for the food and trinket
Lovers the next one is for you Kachi Street Kachi Street begins just outside of the East exit of Kamakura station it has about 250 stores in only around 360 M of Street I love this street it’s a little crowded right now but it’s still so Charming sometimes when I go here I
Can’t believe that’s it’s only around an hour and a half away from Tokyo it’s so so so different yeah kind of like an older Harajuku though like the buildings are much more quaint they have a little bit more how do I say character to them in addition to store selling daily stuff
For locals there are a lot of souvenir stores restaurants and my favorite street food kiosks I love having street food here lots of delicious food to choose from here’s what I had to try first on the list smells so good good I had to get a meat and shirasu steamed Bun it was delicious Kamakura is famous for different types of food but especially shirasu which is like a small fish so I had to try this shasan and it’s so good it’s a little bit Tangy not just Savory like your typical nikan has a bit of a kick still have
This super dense really thick egg it’s not sweet as you would imagine it’s actually quite Savory last but not least for this restaurant this stall we have Minch KATU another popular street food to eat in Kachi street so this is deep fried minced meat oo so good crispy on the outside soft juicy
And super flavorful on the inside a delicious minatu next up I had to have grilled fish cake with octopus it looks super big and juicy let’s it again wow delicious super dense really bouncy extremely flavorful highly recommend I can’t get enough of street food and I absolutely
Love Inari Zushi so we had to go to hanar to get some we ordered a goo or berock root Inari roll and a shirasu in roll I’ve never had Inari in a roll before so this is new I tried the goo one first got shocked it was pickled and
I love pickled anything so that was a pleasant surprise if you don’t know what in is inti is a deep fried tofu pocket and it is quite sweet so for this one sweetness from the inti Savory from the rice and sour from the Goble I absolutely loved
It extremely delicious next I have the one with the shirasu I know it may not look appetizing to you but it’s so good the shirasu was crunchy and had a lot of bite to it and gave an exciting new texture to the roll both equally delicious now for some dessert Kamakura
Chacha has different strength levels of mat ice cream but I couldn’t choose so we went with the premium soft serve one I the same M premium definitely premium you can taste the bitterness of the matcha and also the sweetness because it is a soft serve ice cream
H I have a lot of friends who don’t like matcha and then they came to Japan and then they became matcha fans if you don’t like matcha where you’re from I highly suggest you come to Japan and give the matcha a try okay now having been filled with
Delicious food let’s move on to the next place kotokuin if you look up any list on the internet about where to go or what to do in Kamakura go kuin will always be a part of the top three this Temple houses the dut statue or the great Buddha it is
No exaggeration to say that the Kamakura Great Buddha is the most famous statue in all of Kamakura just to give you a comparison the great Buddha at toi temple in N is around 15 M tall 18 M including the pedestal and it was built in year 742 the great Buddha of Kamakura
Is 11.3 M tall around 13.3 M including the pedestal and was built in year 1252 so it’s pretty big you can even go inside the great Buddha if you’d like the temple grounds also has some seating areas and the trees around the temple are also so beautiful the next place isn’t exactly a
Place but a train line inoshima D the inoshima dentetsu was opened in 1902 and the railroad connects Kamakura to fujisawa Via inoshima the journey from Kamakura to fujisawa station takes around 37 minutes and the train runs along the sea making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in this area
With very nice scenery if you do want to stop at one of the stations though we just got off the stop called Kamakura if you really love anime and I’m talking about OG anime I think you’re going to love this next activity I grew up a big fan of the the anime
Slam dunk and this iconic scene from the opening song with sakuragi being in front of the railroad crossing was based off of this place lots of people stop by and take pictures of enoden passing so it’s a big big big tourist spot and now onto the last place on our
List and only one stop away from Kamakura Koko May shiir Gama Beach I got so excited over the view that I couldn’t even say the name of the place right where are we sh Gama Beach Beach okay where you are I I can’t because I can you see Mount Fuji right
There right there Mount Fuji is right there we were extremely grateful because we got an incredible view of the sunset and M Fuji I mean look at that what an amazing way to end a day we just stayed there for a while admiring The View and the people that were also enjoying the
View whoever lives in that house by the way is so fortunate to see a view like this all the time there are also a lot of cafes and restaurants on that street so you can enjoy the view from there Too For me Kamakura is an awesome place to unwind and just absorb a different side of Japan there are lots of places to see lots of History to learn lots of places to relax and lots of food to enjoy 10 out of 10 highly recommend spending a
Day or two in Kamakura oh and here is a map of Kamakura and we pinned all the places we mentioned in this video they’re quite close to each other and you can easily get to any of the locations either by train or by bus Kamakura City also has a downloadable

Joyous Christmas to you! Happy to see a new video. Many, many years ago, my father served in the US Army, stationed with the 500th Military Intelligence Brigade at Camp Zama. I have an old photo of him standing with the the Great Buddha of Kamakura. I recognized it immediately. Thanks for sharing.

Very useful info thank you so much!
We'll definitely visit there!
What time in the Fall did you record the scenes? I've been to Japan in October/November and didn't see that much color on the trees, I was kind of disappointed at the time.
