20 Sprinter Vans Survive Canada’s Dempster Highway

Going so dented huh we’re going to be so dented welcome back when we left you last we  had conquered the Dalton Highway with   20 Sprinter vans and a group of adventurous  Spirits from prudo Bay Alaska to Dawson City

Canada where we spent some much needed downtime  together we have been on this journey for weeks   now meeting up in seart Alaska after the 4th  of July to continue our Quest through Alaska   into Canada and on to the dumpster Highway  which leads us to the northernmost Village

One can reach by Road Tu toak tuck Canada  venturing miles and miles of unpaved Roads   wildfires and massive storms today we reach  the Pinnacle of our Arctic Journey yet again   crossing the Arctic Circle and swimming in the  Arctic Ocean but this time spending some time

In the Canadian Villages such as anuic and Tu  toak tuck and experiencing a part of the world   very few get to see thank you for joining us  on another adventure through [Music] Canada today we leave the memories created  in Dawson City behind the long days

Of driving on remote dirt roads made  it even more important to keep the dogs   active and take advantage of the simple  things that we won’t see again for a while clear that’s the one we had a wonderful night in Dawson City  explored the town went to the cabaret

Show and slept really nice last night we  decided to get a campground because a hot   shower just sounded like something we really  needed and the rest of the group went to the   boondocking spot that we had been to before  but there wasn’t really enough room for all

Of us so we just kind of went and did our own  thing and explored and had a good time so this   morning we are up and ready to go at 9:00 in the  morning and we have officially hit the dumster

Highway just passed a sign that said no medical  services on the Dempster Highway and no services   at all basically so we’re on our own out here  and it looks like there’s a little bit of fire

Smoke in the air but we’re ready to roll and  uh yeah there’s 20 of us heading up to TU   toak tuck and this is going to absolutely be an  adventure it’s a beautiful day there’s a little

Bit of fire smoke in the air it’s going to be a  good day reminder headlights on everyone thank you Jim drove the Dempster Highway solo to  TU toak tuck 3 years ago and for me this was

A brand new experience I was excited to see  new things because it had been a while since   I’ve experienced a road that I haven’t  been down before this was the ultimate   exploratory Expedition leading 20 Vans up the  Dempster Highway with three more joining us

Up in Dawson City aired down and gassed up it  was time to conquer the Dempster Highway with   our next stop being in the remote region  of of the Yukon Tombstone territorial Park   where we learned a little about the rich  history geology and beauty that surrounds us [Applause] hello Sun Sun the geology anyway

I yeah for it’s wild to think there’s so many mountain  ranges in this area that 48 remain unnamed and unclimbed vehicles that just uh pulled  out from the truck passing uh   is leaking water not sure which one but  we’ve been watching it all day so now we know

We’re going to pull off into  this Campground just to do the   loop and uh take a little bit of  a break since it’s been about 2 hours what camp engineer for a little break we’re  pulling off at this engineer Creek right into the right into the campound copy right turn the

Just beging for some food that Raven just landed on top of your rig Jim we are now where the boy Forest meets  Alpine in Arctic tundra and very much like   addan pass on the Dalton Highway in Alaska  this part of the drive is spectacular and

Very much like the Brooks range with its unique  Mountain formations and this is where it once   again sinks in just how remote we are where  Canadian roads remain wellmaintained and the   road signs were long- winded and a sense  of anticipation for what lies ahead was undeniable way through the actually the truck the

Tra as soon as it starts to get pretty with beautiful weather and time on  our side it was wonderful to sit in   awe and observe the everchanging  geography the hall trucks were   few and far between and because  this was an exploratory trip we

Found random stops along the way to stop  and rest and enjoy each other’s company [Applause]   back the weather was hot and dry Prime for  wildfires and little did we know we had   a wild ride ahead with storms so we stopped to  fuel up in Eagle Plains where the weather had

Changed turning left into Eagle PLS for [Applause] well I was we were in h Joshua tree  and I mean at how much we have you   have C Service just looking  at GPS what do you think 60 miles not too probably like 15 miles Mike how you doing keep asking we’re just checking in

This doesn’t bother me bother me bother me we got  I don’t know where the fires are we got smoke but   every time a whole new Mountain what’s going on so  the question is uh whether or not tape on the back

Of the band makes a difference so uh this one was  not taped and as you can see you’ve got a little   bit of dust at the bottom but uh not really enough  to really worry about so easily swept right off

And this is all day in some very very nasty dust  fabulous there you go so tape or no tape that’s   the question I would say no tape right doesn’t  look like we need it yeah but then again the

Seals are different on every van and the alignment  of the doors is different so you just don’t know right fueled up and ready to roll  with the next stop the Arctic Circle the drive from the tombstone  interpretive Center to Eagle planes

Was gorgeous and the road is much better than  I ever expected there are a few parts that are   bumping through here just outside of Eagle  Plains but the views this can’t be me this   is absolutely beautiful however it’s a very  long drive Jim I were looking at the sign

On the road all Vans are on the road Jim  and I were looking at the signs and one   of them said what 52 kilm till Eagle  PL Eagle Plains but it felt like 300 miles yeah I think it’s because there’s just  no end in sight to the road you can see for

So far that even 7 km felt like it was a  really long time you almost get deja vu   in a place like this where it just you go up  a hill down a hill around a corner every 60 miles that was a joke anyway it’s  been wonderful we’ve had very few

Issues and we will talk about all  the issues that we had towards the   end of our video but uh everything’s  going pretty well so far Bella [Music] uh that for coming up on the Artic Circle I recognize it from the video Welcome to our second passing of the Arctic Circle

Front of the line and reach the [Music] circle [Music] for For blueberries they’re not  they’re ready they’re ready l they’re sweet aren’t they  they’re cute doesn’t feel yet oh that’s tart now we know what the  Bears are eating right uhhuh so what Jim   said he said where’s all the blueberries  I said well look up there’s probably a

Bear that one tastes like so  these are black currants you   can make jams and jellies out of  them they’re just not very tasty we considered finding a boondocking spot  for the night near the Arctic Circle but

The sun was high and we had many more  miles to go so we pressed on to find a   spot that could hold us all for the night  before Crossing into the remote Northwest Territories when we come up over these  Hills the only thing that I can say is wow

A lot of mosquitoes out there but  that’s how it’s been the entire time   so we kind of expected it we’re going  to light a fire get our thermos cells going sit Ember sit good girl [Applause] stay [Applause] very unprepared like here these are  two extras like oh you’re you saved

My life to blood she’s O blood a so they  like you mosquito say oh my God this is   the best blood right here CU it’s good she’s my  mosquito think discrimination what do you think yeah don’t wait for everybody that way we’re not  bombarding all the fairies at one time uh it’s

About 50 Mi to the first ferry and then about  25 mil to the second Ferry didn’t you mean 6 6   60 well it’s 54 I wanted to be a little bit more  accurate around the corner so right around the

Corner uh on the way to the ferry we’re going to  cross into the Northwest Territories that border   crossing is really awesome it’s through a  pass and uh there’s a nice area where you   get a picture with the Northwest Territory  sign cuz I know a lot of people have never

Been to the Northwest Territory so uh we’ll  stop there first and then we’ll continue on   to the fairies but once you get off the ferry  whoever you’re with if you’re solo we’re going   to be right behind you so it doesn’t matter  just continue on to the next ferry okay and

That way people can cuz we’re going to end up  getting staggered between those fairies it takes   a while to get across uh so we’ll be crossing  the Peele River and the McKenzie river on the

Fairies uh both of them are really pretty areas  and uh just have fun um but you can get water   in anuic so if you go to the other Campground  it’s free water free dump so actually downtown   but everything that I’ve read don’t stay at the  one downtown because it’s really noisy and it’s

Not very uh nice safe it’s safe it’s just not  nice okay so I recommend Jack Camp you define nice get just the facilities are not as uh  maintained as the territorial maybe not as   modern so those are our two options we’ll we’ll  play it by ear we’ll check out the C plane base

If we don’t want to stay there then we can just  go up to the Jack Camp which C plane base Comes First We Take Care at the very end of our  60 M Tri end of our 60 m double trip yeah

It’s 120 mil total today so it’s not bad it’s  a nice easy drive a nuic has all the services   that you could possibly need they have a nice  grocery store um so yeah I recommend get out

Go and see the town a little bit today if you  want to and then uh we’ll do a drawing tonight   for a canyon Adventure vanand item we have  four items left we’re not going to do them   all in one night but uh we’ll spread them  course not we’ll start with the lowest one

First I think he enjoyed that for [Applause] go to back into the go to back yeah back saw that much water when we  pulled in along and I said go oh we’re done copy three vans have stopped to help phah  with her tire that’s correct Roger keep us

Posted we’re going to find  a little pull off up here [Applause] MO SA four vanand including faras that  have stopped to take and change her   tire out they’ll work on the repair  camp tonight so we have continued forward copy you have continued  forward uh after fixing FIS tire

So FIS tire is still being changed Ed  but there was enough bands there to   create congestion so we moveed forward and  they’ll be following us okay copy that got it thank you first groups of coming up on the first Mac copies first group  of Vans are arriving at the F Crossing see I

Um how many we got on here six we  got eight or three van how many   Vans eight you have eight on here  seven seven okay so 13 more 13 more Vans um eventually T to and thank you [Music] thank don’t forget to smile nice and hot yes it’s been hot here all look

There there’s other bands on this [Music]  road really since to may have a wonderful Day on the fa you guys already across the  last six uh in front of you Jessie has   just finished the first barrier and on  their way to the second barrier okay wow that’s pretty good uh radio  perceptions we’re probably 30 m apart is for for The sense of isolation really began to sink  in for all of us as we were grateful to have   each other the road ahead had an ominous  appearance seemingly disappearing into Oblivion Hi come on it looked to be rain so we stopped  to let Ember and Bella out to play   we had been hopeful for a little  rain to tame the wildfires but   what started out as hope quickly turned  to fear as the raindrops got bigger and

Bigger those hurt this is hail it hurts this is hail it’s bouncing off the top ouch d what model marker are you at 250 marker 250 and uh yeah it’s pretty big no it’s [Applause] huge somebody coming up behind  me and I think it’s a big truck two oh my God these are

Huh we’re going to be so Dented it’s over [Applause] too [Applause] we’re going to make an attempt  to keep moving through the storm holy the hill seems to by FR at [Music] 32 now what’s gone after that Adrenaline Rush that  reminded us we are not in control

Of our journey on this road the  weather cleared up and we set out   on a mission to find a place to explore  before reaching the Canadian Village of anuic all [Applause] this is exploratory right we  could consider this in the

Future well that would have been perfect for just  us but we really small group yeah it’s a nice spot there’s more space over there but we  don’t want to crash their [Music] part feel   bad about that so let’s give  them peace and go get them um that’s cool

Cool on yep we got a hitchhiker su’s taking a ride this is a bonus for yum Browning both sides into the meat  and once that’s done pressure cook it   for an hour and 20 minutes we’re  going to use mother’s ale as our base so we’ll pour this in

Cancel seal up our pot we’re going to  pressure cook for an hour 20 get a nice and tender it keep warm and We’re Off to the  Races what we racing to I’m so hungry that   we’re racing to get this food into my stomach  even though it’s an hour and 20 minutes we’ll see What are your thoughts on what  you just cooked well let’s see I got to say that is a really really good meal   like 3 weeks into this trip that’s  incredible it tastes so good let’s eat we’ve carried this meat with  us since where did you buy it in

To yes three bears has three  bears really good stuff in to Y cheers to however many weeks it’s been it’s been fun tell us what happened Farah well I was  driving behind you guys eating all the dust   but I I saw my alarm went went out uh pressure  and next thing I just kept it rolling because

Thinking it was a false alarm and then I saw  the first pull out I’m like yeah I’ll take it   to the next one and it got down to 58 I did  not air down so I was up 70 something so it

Was like 70 down to 58 I was going to ask you  if you aired down yes you did air down and yes   and then I air down afterwards you know you air  down after you got the FL yes butth yeah we get

The spare tire on there it’s good so muscle  is up what are you going to do this to that   this one mhm what are we doing yeah what are you  going oh so the guys said they will try to plug [Applause]

It as soon as I pulled over I heard it  so I tried to locate it it’s somewhere   here there’s a rock that’s wedged if I  can find it now I don’t know oh right here what’s the plan well Todd and Nestor said

They will try to plug it but I  think it’s Todd right now all right tell me about your hammock just right here you go I love it I love it when I’m at the beach  I would open this and just sit right here like

Who needs a bed yeah cuz this was my solution  to not having to get on the bed during the day   what you sleeping more that or that during  the day this mhm at night up there I love

It yeah that’s intuitive that is awesome I  so when I sit at home I think about not so   bright ideas and apply it and make holes so  pretty much everything that’s in the inside I   did it so if it’s there are holes there that  I made them holes something I got some busy

Customers I’m not going back to that this is  what went through her TI her Tire a piece of   shale about the size of uh pinky caliber so  it’s like a knife Tire now the whole thing

Is is hopefully we have a plug big enough to  fit that thing make a necklace out of that   you know you could do that make a pendant out  of it or yeah or like the engage so this this

Is this is ream the hole out to make sure that  you can fit the glue and the patch inside the   hole so this is a normal kit and I’ll show you  how this works in a second and we’ll put a patch

In there glue it up stick it in here it’s on the  edge normally wouldn’t advise patching it right   here with a plug because it normally has to be  Center somewhere between here and here because

This Edge is just don’t know if it’s going to  take but it’s not going to hurt so that’s what   we’re going to do is try and put a plug in here  and glue it and then we’ll cut the end off of

The plug and hopefully it will set up hold there  and she’ll have it at least for a halfway decent   spare but I would replace this spare if it was  me and that’s what we’re about to do so start

Out so a piece of shell like that is actually  what blew our Tire in 2019 uhhuh okay this is   going through right here right on the side you can  see it and I really don’t even have to ream it out

Like you would normally do for a plug normal plug  you’d go back and forth like that to try and make   sure that it would go in real easy so that’s where  we’re going after you do that you grab this piece

Here and one of these patch strips  which is a piece of pretty much just   rubber with some glue on it not enough  glue you pull that out excuse me and   then we’re going to go ahead and put  it through here we kind of pinched the

Top uh let’s see if we can get this thing close  enough to where I would normally use a pair of   needle nose I don’t know if I have any right  now or a pair of pliers to pull that through

You get the patch in there to about halfway point  and you see the split in here it actually will   open up between the two so when we pull this out  it’s going to be like this doubled up in size and

This part of it is going to be sticking out and so  you’ll have two pieces of this rubber that’s going   to be glued with this adhesive right here so what  we’re going to do is put a little of this on here

In the old days that’s all they  used to do to patch tires before   they got all fancy so don’t be  afraid to use too much cuz it’s   just going to do your thing and you  got enough there for three or four

Flats and then all we do is take this piece  here try not to push it in so far that you   can’t excuse me I’m going to might don’t I  mess up your camera okay it is in but not

All all way in so then at this point you’re  going to need like two plugs in this I think so let’s see if we can get this one off nope  not yet and again this thing’s a pretty wide

Hold I would don’t know if this is even going  to work so we’re going to put a couple more in there and that’s that’s the general  principle how you plug now whether   like I said you might have one where  it works perfect and another one that Okay okay got both of them in there and I’m just going  to try and spread them out as best we [Music] can again whether this takes is going  to be cuz that was a pretty big hole

It wasn’t like a simple screw hole it looked  like somebody shot it with a 45 mhm so we’ll   let some of that set up before I put air in  it cuz I don’t want to just push it right

Back out and let the glue take and then  we’ll see if it’s hold holds uh by this   in a couple hour or in an hour or so doesn’t  take long to dry what’s all the noise about huh these are rose hips they’re stunted up here  they’re usually really big and

Tall this is called Labrador te oh they couldn’t patch it um and same Rock  so it was late that cut her tire and it’s   mixed in with all the rocks on the road so  you can’t tell but she was what happened in

Anic what’s that what happened in anuic when  you needed a new tire so in anic it was a   $500 Tire y so that we had a spare because  there were only two vans so we wanted to

Make sure we have plenty of spares just in  case as we headed north nice and clean and shower we went to and bought these and they  have a table who took a shower today in the   shower here at the campground not me yet how  was it great the best shower experience the

Whole trip I’ll get to it later really who’s  going to take another one in the morning clean   bathro [Music] clean for those of you that  have it mounted and not big strong dude like   Tim here we go the easy way to pick this  up put it against your legs grab it in the

Front keep your back straight and then you  you bring it up to here you already got it curled to mount it on the door so on your th 10 more you did that so well you show us that  again so we’re getting ready to do another

Drawing we’ve got four items left as we’ve talked  about before okay all four items come from Canyon   Adventure Vans there’s four different stages that  they got us so we’re going to do stage four today   which is the lowest stage obviously um so with  this all proceeds go to Project 9 hero it’s a

Nonprofit organization that take care of our dogs  who serve all of us right so retired working dogs   across country project K9 hero takes care of  all of their medical and Veterinary needs so   stage one is the glss their new brand new model  workstation for the driver’s side yep oh from who

From Canyon Adventure Vans if you haven’t heard  of them great company we’re happy to support them   we’ve been supporting them the entire time we’ve  had the rebel we are one of the first owners of   the glss and we just absolutely love it it’s been  really incredible for keeping our van organized

We’ve gone a long long way to get to this point  so enjoy what you’re doing there’s a lot of pull   offs along the way to see you know signs and  scenery and stuff like that take advantage of

It and really soak it in because I know a lot  of people this is like a bucketless portion of   their trip so take advantage of it and enjoy it  all right let’s get our drawing underway okay so

The next four items they are either Direct ship  in other words if you don’t live near Canyon   Adventure Vans he’s going to send them to you  it’s a lot cheaper than sending them up to Alaska

And then us trying to give them to you and carry  them around with us the whole time or he’ll do a   direct install on any item that is won during this  event so stage four is the canyon Adventure band’s armrests W skin

W do your do your magic John them up okay  what do the old ones feel like they’re like dirt now probably Dusty very dusty right read it last four  mhm 64 83 [Music] oh 6483 yep I never win anything It’s a very hot day here in anuic and we have  all of our Shades up the air conditioning for   the doggies and ourselves we’ll put our  shade up it’s going to be cozy here to   sleep [Music] tonight so what have we learned  today the Dempster Highway has been even better

Than we anticipated and I had been ready for a  new adventure sometimes our minds get so caught   up in routine and the normaly of the mundan  that it can be difficult to realize when it’s   time for something new whether it be a new road  traveled a new adventure or both it’s never too

Late to take the leap into the unknown next  week we reach the end of the road Tu toak tuck   Canada subscribe to follow along with us on our  adventures in the Arctic and give us a thumbs up

To show your support and until we see you again  stay happy healthy and safe we’ll see you again Soon [Music]

We are coming up on the end of our epic journey to the remote Canadian village in the Northwest Territories, Tuktoyaktuk. Today, we begin our quest up the Dempster Highway with 20 Sprinter vans. We have overlanded together through Alaska, from the shores of Seward Alaska, North to Prudhoe Bay along the Dalton Highway we overcame mechanical issues and came together to share our knowledge of our build out 4×4 Winnebago Revel Sprinter Van. This was an incredible summer adventure that we are excited to share with you. Thank you for joining us on our journey through Canada, past the Arctic Circle, over the continental divide and through the most beautiful scenery one could ever imagine! 1. Hi, love your videos. If you could include the date when the video was taken that would be awesome. It helps put things in perspective in terms of weather conditions for those of us that haven’t traveled in the North Yet.

Edit: i just noticed the weather map in the video and it shows July 2023. That’s helpful.

  2. Great video guys as always hope to see the Artic circle some day just a far ride from sunny FL stay safe love the vids

  3. Another wonderful video. FYI there is a good tire repair shop on Inuvik which has lots of used tires available. We ruined one tire on the way north and purchased one to keep our 2 useable spares. The tech identified the shale as Rock River Shale and said the zone is about 150 km long. We had two flat tires simultaneously on the way south but both could be plugged on the truck, an F350 with a slide in camper. All tires were heavy duty AT designed for rugged off road use. The tech also said he had patched or replaced every brand and size made. In spite of the tire problems this was a wonderful part of our trip.

  4. Hi guys,
Wow did that hail break anyone's windshields or dents?
Love those small villages and towns..
I see the fireweed is almost to the top meaning winter is on it's way.
We only have 10 more days before our summer is over and the cooler weather arrives.
The mountain and rivers are beautiful.
    Another wonderful video.
Both of you stay safe and of course HAVE FUN
    Your friend
    James

  5. I knew I would regret driving by this intersection last year and missing that great destination! Oh well, it is only 14,000 km return from home!!!
