JW MARRIOTT Phu Quoc, Vietnam 🇻🇳【4K Resort Tour & Review】Still at The Top?
For years, the JW Marriott Phu Quoc was hands down the best resort on the island. With the recent opening of The Regent though, this fantastical fever dream of a resort’s number one spot may be on the line. Join me for a full tour and review and welcome to Phu Quoc.
For those of you that are new to the channel, thanks for stopping by, my name is Kevin and I am the Flip Flop Traveller. I think the internet is in need of a whole lot more honesty when it comes to airline and hotel content and that’s why I’m here.
I make trip reports and high end hotel reviews and I always self fund my trips. In fact, you’ll always be able to find the exact price I paid in the description below. This content was created without the knowledge of or compensation from Marriott because I want as typical of an experience as possible.
So, in this video today, I’m going to give you nothing more than my personal, honest and unbiased opinion based on my own experience. The amount of attention that this hotel received when it opened what feels like decades ago way back in 2017 was quite a sight to behold.
Since it’s opening, it’s style has been duplicated- you can kinda see it right here- literally all over the island. Think, backlot European street scene movie set, meets Disney world, meets cotton candy factory explosion. Et voila. Nearly any non-international brand development on the island since it’s opening has been
Created in it’s image, it was that big of a deal. Sungroup, the owner of the hotel, literally created another island theme park to the south of Phu Quoc with lots of let’s say, inspiration from this property. This doesn’t effect the resort itself, I’m just trying to frame how big of a deal this
Place was in it’s first few years. And here we are at Lamarck University’s entrance. So based on the attention, you can imagine, my expectations were high. As we pull up to the resort and have a walk around the entrance, let me tell you a bit about the history of the property.
“As the story goes, between 1880 to 1940, the Lamarck University was thriving with both local children and the children of Colonial residents. In the 1940s the University was closed, mothballed and stood still in time. A number of the buildings were lost and all of it fell into disrepair.
Luckily, Sun Group saw the potential and commissioned the world famous architect Bill Bensley to return the site to its former glory, this time in the form of Phu Quoc’s most elegant international five star resort.” I should mention a few things.
First, what I just read for you is a quote from the inside cover of the Student Book, the name of the resort guide which I’ll show you more of later. Second, no this was not a university. It was built brand new for this hotel.
This resort is a storytelling experience with every minute detail designed by Bensley, that part is true. Third, at no point do any of the staff break the fourth wall. The bit and the story is maintained meticulously throughout the resort.
If you go on Tripadvisor you’ll see this in action with the hundreds of reviews the resort has raving about the incredible restoration of a heritage university. And last, the reason they can maintain the bit so well, is because it is crafted that
Well, but I’d be lying if I said the elements have been kind to all aspects of the resort. I’ll get into that more later. For now, let’s enjoy what I do think is one of the more beautifully designed lobby and reception areas in the entire country.
From wall to wall, ceiling to floor, every detail has either been crafted for or curated for the resort’s many maintained themes. Lamarck’s mascot, the Ridgebacks is one of those themes, named for the Phu Quoc Ridgeback, which is actually a dog breed.
Bensley has been featured on my channel multiple times- and he has a few different types of works that he creates, primarily cultural integration properties or storytelling properties. All of his projects in Vietnam, from the Hotel de la Couple in Sapa to the MGallery Yen Tu,
To the Intercontinental Sun Peninsula to here at the JW lean heavily into the storytelling side of things. Upon arriving you’ll be offered a cold towel and a refreshingly tart hibiscus iced tea. Surrounded by greenery and soaring paned windows, the reception area is located just off to the side of where we are now.
Here’s your friendly reminder to click that thumbs up button, subscribe to the channel and share this video with friends and family. Those are truly the easiest ways- all free for you- to help the channel grow. If you’d like to support me further my Patreon is linked in the description below.
Thanks very much in advance. After taking in all of those beautiful details you’ll be lead around the resort by staff, first on a quick tour down Rue Lamarck and then on to your room. Bensley named the fictional university Lamarck after Jean Baptiste Lamarck, a French Naturalist-
And from that one of the other themes of the resort, the display of and preservation of flora and fauna. This is surely not a typical resort layout, so in order to help you to understand where we are walking right now, let me show you on the map.
The resort is located way down at the far southern tip of the island, one of the few major name resorts which actually get a sunrise view- with the vast majority of facilities being on the west side of the island. Zooming in further we can see the compact size of the resort.
It doesn’t feel small, but I think intimate is a fair word. The buildings to the far left are some of the super pricey oceanfront villas with the majority of the rooms being centered around the two primary pools. Besides the pools and one restaurant, all of the resort’s other facilities are located
Over here on what they call Rue Lamarck. The reception area at the top of it and where we are about to walk down. If you’re curious about the best time to visit or driving times and taxi fares, this is the graphic for you.
The street is lined from tip to tip with different facilities. The first space we come to is the Lamarck Lounge. Open throughout the day, the lounge seems to be utilized quite a bit for events and guest arrivals but also has a game room attached to it for guest use.
On the left hand side you’ll find some local shops and behind that you have the JW Garden. Also back there are quite a few event spaces and such. One design detail that I love about the property are the number of retro billboard murals throughout the property.
When doing some research for this video, I came across The Points Guy’s review of the property. I have reviewed or at least stayed in quite a few properties he has reviewed and I generally share similar sentiments. The title of his review for here was, Whimsical but Worn.
He says, “Though fantastical and over the top, this university-themed resort is already showing its age via weathered paint, faded fabrics and some rundown facilities. [Compared to the Regent] the guest experience doesn’t feel nearly as luxurious, personalized or detail-oriented.”
Walking further we will pass by the Department of Physical Education and the Spa and stop by the working Lantern Workshop where you can create your own, for a fee. Don’t worry I’ll be back to the spa and gym later on.
For now, let me explain why I agree and disagree with The Points Guy. I agree some areas are a bit worn. I think Rue Lamarck itself could use a bit of sprucing up- the whole thing just looks a bit like an old sidewalk.
There are some cheaper materials used, some a bit worn- he is correct, but I don’t think it matters here nearly as much as just about any other resort. This place is so experiential that I reckon less than one percent of guests would even
Notice the things that he and I could nitpick, so I don’t think it’s worth diving into. As for comparing it to the Regent, he is absolutely correct. If we are talking about the best resort on the island, the Regent is the very easy winner,
But the JW is still definitely number two and that’s not nothing. The resorts are so unbelievably different that I think they both have a home here. Though I would say I think the JW is more suited for younger families where as the Regent is better for couples or families with older kids.
If you head down to the description you’ll find my next five videos to come out as well as other bits and pieces like the soundtrack titles featured in this video. On your way down there, don’t forget to subscribe- I release full length videos every Thursday and Saturday.
Down here we have French & Co which is the on site deli which also serves up afternoon tea. Walk a little bit further down and we reach the beach area which is just in front of most of the dining venues.
Before we head over to the Pools and beach itself, I think this is a good point for me to show you a few highlights from the student book and how comprehensive it is. This one is over the top, but I really do with more resorts that would put together guides like this one.
It has information on each of the venues, a resort map, a QR code treasure hunt and lots more, including separate activity calendars for kids and adults which you can see here. The resort has four pools open for guests.
The first small one for kids- just across from the kids club and the other three larger ones are open to all. If I had to critique one thing about the hotel design, it would be this pool. If you’ve seen any photos or ads about this resort surely you would have seen a gorgeous
Shell shaped iridescent pool- we will get to that in a bit, it is beautiful, but I don’t understand the point of making what looks like a really cheap and generic we could be anywhere pool over here.
The resort has a total of 244 rooms, suites and villas and the majority of them are in low rise buildings in a broad U shape around the pool and garden areas. Really beautiful gardens at that, I should add.
The beach area itself is beautiful and the waters are generally calm as you see here today. The clarity may be effected by the time of year though. The beach has a variety of seating options and is kept spotlessly clean. And here we have the much more famous of the three pools.
Lastly there is one other- again generic looking- pool at the far south end near the ritzy-titzy villas. Now we’re going to head in the general direction of my room, which is a garden walk out room, similar to what you see here.
Behind the U shape of buildings is a buggy pathway and some other guest room categories. As far as all of the standard rooms and facilities go, they are all fully accessible. Of course continuing with the University theme, there is also a jogging track.
When was the last time your luxury resort had a jogging track like this? The blue building over there is where my room is. Each of the buildings is a different university department and all of the signage is marked as such. It may take a bit of getting used to on your first day.
I was staying in the Department of Zoology. The rooms are elegant and fresh with soaring ceilings, especially on the ground floor. The mini bar was well stocked with glass bottled RO water and genuine Nespresso pods, with a few other chargeable drinks and snacks below.
There are three things I don’t like about the room and the first two can be seen here, first up is that grey carpet. It is one of those outdoor plastic carpets, floor covering may be a better word. I find that these plastic carpets generally speaking hold onto quite a bit of dirt and
Are simply not nice to walk on. The second thing is the layout. If we look at the size of the full room, it is plenty large enough for a standard room, but the layout prioritizes design over comfort and practicality.
There’s a massive amount of dead space given to the entry hall, closet space and walk in shower which results in what feels like a cramped bedroom area. Having two double beds in here or worse a rollaway bed- I honestly don’t even know how you’d walk around the room.
The rollaway would fit best in the bathroom as you’ll see. Avoiding the reflection of these convex mirror domes truly made this bedroom one of the most difficult to film I’ve ever had. The high ceilings and design in general are one thing I do love about the room and the second is the bathroom.
The windows, decorative details and slab marble add a really upmarket feel to what could have easily gone in the tacky direction. The windows by the way just look out into a shaft- there’s no way for guests to walk by.
I love the shower, I think the tallest rainfall shower I’ve ever seen, but I also hate it- let me explain. Personally I like my rooms to be kept quite cold for sleeping, but I don’t necessarily want my bathroom to be cold.
Normally it’s not an issue, but considering the open air nature of the shower combined with the fact that the water literally cooled down before it hit you it had to travel so far- made for a very chilly shower experience.
As silly as it sounds in Vietnam, if I was visiting again I’d actually request a space heater just for the bathroom just for showers. The closet was in the form of a stylized wardrobe with an open center section for luggage.
Finally just off of the hallway, we have the separate tiny toilet room with it’s own tiny sink. I did think the rolled washcloths in here with a bin specifically for them was a nice touch. Ok, time to head outside, the condensation on the windows giving you a pretty good idea
Of how humid it was. The outdoor space is my final favorite thing about the room. If I came back, I’d probably want an ocean view just to change things up, but I enjoyed the added private space here which would be great for a family- if you could figure out
Where everyone was going to sleep. Ok, food and drink time. The first one was locked up like fort Knox and is Pink Pearl the Vietnamese Fine Dining restaurant. During my stay this was only open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On their website they’re currently showing only set menus as the dining option, each
Of which with a Truffle theme and price tag. Next up is probably one of the more cleverly designed over the top venues I’ve ever seen, the Department of Chemistry Bar. I’ll let this one speak for itself as I tell you about the service at the resort.
It was either really really good or really really mediocre. I’d say the highlights of the staff were easily at the restaurants and bars. That said, as with literally all resorts on the island, the staff are overall very young-
So what they don’t score in poise they’ll generally be trying to make up for in enthusiasm with better than average English skills from the staff I interacted with. Near the beach is Red Rum which is a Latin inspired bar and grill which is open for dinner daily.
Finally we have the magnificent Tempus Fugit, latin for Time Flies and styled as the Universities Department of Architecture with endless small details which just kept adding to the charm. For that reason, this is where I had dinner. This is their all day menu which had a variety of cuisines on offer.
For starters I chose the veal with tuna sauce which was out of this world good. Veal is not so common to see on menus in Vietnam so I knew I had to try it and recommend you do as well.
For the main, I went more Vietnamese with Bo Luc Lac or Shaking Beef as it’s usually translated to. Shaking referring to the wok-frying motion, not scared cows. Also really well done. Tender beef, actual wok hei and peppers and onions which had enough of the rawness taken off of them.
The next morning, the sun was trying to show it’s face, but just couldn’t gather up the courage to get through the clouds. Heading back to Tempus Fugit for a pretty spectacular buffet. I don’t want to distract from all of the beautiful details, so I will definitely let
This speak for itself for a bit. I think I went back for that pork belly more than once. Easily the best thing on the buffet. There was also an egg station which was more than just omelets and also offered Eggs Benedict which were expertly prepared and almost piping hot.
Ok, let’s check out the spa and fitness center as I bring together my final thoughts. There was one thought that I had when putting together the graphics for this one. When a Bill Bensley property is no longer the crown jewel of it’s hometown, does it
Begin to transition from fantastical and unique to tacky and tired. Part of this is up to personal taste levels and part is yet to be seen, but I think it’s a valid Question. Bensley’s properties in Sapa, Hanoi, Da Nang and until recently here are generally considered the best hotel in their respective city.
Only time will tell if the other locations or even here will be able to maintain or take back those titles. I really do hope you enjoyed this colorful video today, if you did, please be sure to click the thumbs up button and subscribe with notifications on so you don’t miss out on
Any of my twice weekly videos. I’ll see you next time on board Royal Jordanian in Business Class from Athens to Amman. Oh and as always, thanks for watching until the end.
Watch this video if you want to see what it’s like to stay at the luxurious 5-Star JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay in the south of Vietnam. This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that’s the way I like it!

First!!!!!🎉
Me and my partner stayed in this one before Covid for 4 nights and we never left the resort lol. This is one resort we will never ever forget. It just smacks itself in your memory and stayed there. Will want to go back and bring friends, just to let them experience it themselves. Btw, I took out some of the books off the shelf at the lobby, thinking they are fakes but they are not lol. The Pink Pearl’s private dining room upstairs are all over the top and elegantly crazy like the main dining room.
We had a green colour twin bed room on 3rd floor and it was much more spacious and a better layout. The balcony with its sofa looking out into the sea was very cosy.
Thanks for sharing
Wow, never expected this to be a JW Marriot property! From the moment you entered the grounds I got Hotel de La Coupole vibes and no surprise as it turns out to be another Bill Bensley design. I can imagine for some people it maybe too much out there, but I love the originality and quirkiness but at the same time class and style it exudes. It’s just so different from most of the cookie cutter designs. It’s a true experience, yes maybe the Regent is better, but to me this personally feels more special. Thank you, absolutely loved this review!
You have mentioned the Intercontinental Sun Peninsula at Danang in this and another review. Do you intend to review it? I ask because I have stayed there in 2018 and it would be interesting to know your opinion.
For me, the Intercon in Danang will always be Bensley’s best property in VN. From the design, the details, the paintings, the door knobs, the storyline, all the mysterious corridors, the black and white and especially the toilets. Although his style can sometimes be seen as tacky, for me the Danang property is his most elegant work with true Vietnamese inspiration. It was meticulously designed. The cliff terrain also helped. Later Bensley’s properties have become a bit…too much.
I'm not sure what you meant by the cold showers, I stayed there and the hot water was fine for us. It is an amazing resort, and the beach is amazing. The price for food on site is on another level though.
Thrilled to see this review!! Was going to stay at the regent after seeing that one (for a birthday trip) and then found this hotel, which, well it just looks like it had a much more beautiful beach! And the good aspects of Disney without all the repulsive crowds 😅 it does look worn as TPG said, but couldn’t agree more with you, that the whimsical nature of the resort would help blend any imperfections in. 🎉🥸
The pools! Are they heated? The shell is gorgeous, but more pools is better than less as far as finding a private place to swim sometimes…
Would love if you did a collection of reviews of Bill Bensley hotels ❤🪴
I stayed at the JW and IC on Phu Quoc over Christmas and New Years. We stayed at the JW first and it was complete different experience to IC. The JW felt warm and the service and people working at the JW were very friendly and seemed to enjoy their job. Compared to the IC, where the main area, besides the Club Lounge, felt always overcrowded and was so noisy, due to many familys with kids. We regret that we stayed first at the JW and then at the IC. The JW is complete different world compared to the IC. Fantastic Hotel!
Did you notice if there a car rental place in the hotel? Scooters a little scary 😂😅
Thanks 🙏🏽 for another review luxury travel mavin! 🙌🏽
Go to intercontanental da nang !!!!
Excellent video of a property I was not familiar with. I can't get my head around the "theme" for a beach resort. I quite like it but I am partial to anything by Bensley. Having been to the IC Danang (same designer and owner) regularly except during Covid, that property requires a lot of upkeep and the quality of some of the material is meh. The rooms while very large have also a not so practical use of the space which seems to be an issue you have also experienced here.
I was actually watching the Regent before this video came up Kevin,,,you can see the Bill Bensley design in this hotel very nice indeed and thank you again for a great video,,,peace and happiness on your travels 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Beautiful my impression is the playa❤
Mmmm 😋 pork belly. Nice resort, thanks for sharing 🎉😊
This resort looks fascinating! Thank you for the tour 😊
I have been there twice, but it's still very exciting to watch your video. I like the way you lead people to experience everything even though it is good or bad. As a Vietnamese, the property is our pride. I do not really like the details which are kind of too busy, but I love the vibe and the environment there, the beach is really nice and the buildings are so elegant to match with the curve of the white sand beach. You are excellent hotel-story teller. Thank you very much for being an ambassador of Vietnamese tourism.
I don’t know … having an issue with the design of extra pools is like getting a free extra dessert in a restaurant and grieving about the portion size. 😊 I actually was happy that you indicated the shell pool was not the only pool on the property. Also I wish more of the big super chains had unique features like this property instead of offering the Generic Resort type look.
Oof. I can't help thinking that the non-Disneyesque parts of that resort look like what would happen if the E&O in Penang or the Danna in Langkawi got a makeover by Restoration Hardware. You used the word tacky, albeit in a question. I'd say naff fits the bill but also happily acknowledge that design is subjective.
I really enjoy your videos- they are so well made. Thank you!
Ritzy-titzy villas…love it.
Loved your review, thank you! This will definitely be added to my list.
Thank You ✈️
With so much attention to detail in every corner of the hotel why don’t they bundle the wires hanging down from the tv.
Great video in JW Marriott Phu Quoc! I hope that on your next trip to Vietnam you will visit Mgallery Legacy Yen Tu. 🥰
my wife and i stayed here before covid and really enjoyed it. it really is a beautiful property though the "twee factor" does get a little overbearing. also, at the time, the breakfast buffet ranked up there as the best we had ever enjoyed anywhere. it's interesting to see marriott's portfolio of hotels in vietnam growing but also how different the properties are. for example, there is simply no comparison between this JW and the new (-to-marriott) renaissance hoi an which is the most boring hotel ever conceived. as always, enjoy your work — keep it up!
I love Phu Quoc island✨
Man, how rich are you?
The bedrooms in itself reminded me of the St Regis hotel in Osaka 😅
Смотрела видео 2 раза. Очень очень очень красиво. Интересная архитектура. Что то в последнее время вам как то не везёт с номером. Но всё равно я рада за вас. Такая красота кругом! Приятного отдыха!
Stayed there as well, but it wasn’t at the right time of the year as the currents brought plastic garbage all the way from the mainland. Regent will keep its top spot for sure.
I am dreading your Crown Plaza review already. My bet is you will give it a 65/70 on 100 score. Let’s see 25 Jan 👍🏼
Not sure why it took the YT algorithm this long to recommend your channel, but so glad it finally did. Just the fact thay you actually put the price of things in your description makes your channel 10x more valuable than nearly everyone else making this kind of content!
Morning Kevin!! What a beautiful Hotel!! I love the various Themes however the interiors and the uniqueness of those small touches make a huge difference!!! My favorite of ALL was the Bars!!! Also, that Breakfast Buffet Selection looked amazing! I think whilst there is many more from you to come, this so far is my FAVOURITE review of all Kevin. Have a wonderful day 🙂
I was here in late february 2023 and there was a constant stream of rubbish floating onto the beach. The staff did their best to keep it clean, but just couldn't kep up.
I assumed this was seasonal, but you say the beach was pristine, and must have been there in January?
Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw, might have been a recent storm or something…
Maybe that's why most resorts are on the other side of the island, away from the main land. Had no such problems at vinpearl immediately after.
Never thought a JW could be over the top enough to make a video this long. Very funnily accurate description of the style in the town as you drove in 😂. Btw there's a spelling mistake in the title in 'Marriott' 😉
Looks super nice! Thanks for the info + video!
Thank you – yet another great report. Good to see your subscriber numbers increasing – very much deserved!. Is there not a 'Club Lounge' at the hotel? Also is there much in the immediate (walkable) vicinity outside of the hotel e.g. local restaurants, shops, supermarkets, attractions?
Excellent vlogs
Just very curious want to kindly ask you why you are always staying and filming your hotel vlog in the whole Asia but perfectly circumvent China, even there is no single hotel video filmed in Hongkong, please do come to Hongkong and even China mainlaid to experiece some of the best urban luxurious hotels in the world, I would say half of them are better than all of the urban hotels you have films in this channel. Don;t get me wrong, I really Iike your channel, you are filmming in a way that no other can compare. Maybe you think is hard to get into China mainland, feel free to use 144-hour foreigner transit visa. Afraid of being in China, never trust western media who always demonize China, just literally search some vlog of China filmed by Western, all of them are surprisingly shocked by what is the real China present to them. Not to mention, China is the biggest hub of luxury hotels with resonable price, please come to China to film your own story in the channel. If you need any help like confuse about which hotel you want to choose, feel free to reach out to me I can give you a list of hotel that deserve to stay with confidence. Anyway, really like your channel always supporting you, althoght feelling a bit disappointed as you missed the gem of the Asia!!
the design is chic, the rest was terrible, I just returned from this hotel. service is 0, the sea is dirty, a bunch of garbage layouts, tiles are falling off in the pool. the room was not cleaned when we checked in, they give us tea in bags for breakfast, we can’t bring our own yoghurts, and the staff is always absent.
So empty.
Hi, this hotel is very good. I wanted to know how do you think the Movenpick at Phu Quoc compares to the likes of the Marriott? Are you planning on staying there at some point soon?
Is it me but all of the vlogs on YouTube show everything completely empty?? Its kind of creepy like an episode of black mirror or twilight zone
This is such an amazing place!
Great videos.
Tons of detail. Subscribed
