How Do You Declutter Personal Belongings | We Are Going to Japan Camping Car Show 2024

Hi everyone thanks again for tuning in here to Coco Leno Japan so we are on our way to the Japan camping car show 2024 in uh Chiba near Tokyo but uh we are actually driving from Iwakuni all the way to Tokyo which is about a 12-hour drive so we decided to go ahead

And make a quick stop here in takashima which is really cool Island right here several temples here uh behind those trees really cool and then way over there you can see there’s a um uh walkway where you literally just walk across to the island but actually this upcoming video is uh me basically

Rambling about going through my War chest that I had in storage for many years in North Carolina and we finally retrieved it as I’m editing this video video I was thinking to myself like you know no one really wants to watch this uh but on the other hand too I think

It’s probably relevant so I was telling my wife about it that I was working on this video and then I was kind of having uh mixed feelings about it because no one really wants to listen to anyone like going through their personal items and uh the sentimental value that it has

To you then we’re also talking about you know how you know when we purchased our AA here in the rural side of Japan you know I had to go through uh the previous owner’s very personal property such as photos and stuff like that so in the way

It was kind of sad and so she said that there’s actually a term in Japanese called shatu do not necessarily mean that you’re dying right now basically you’re just kind of cleaning up stuff so that your loved ones are not stuck with it uh later on so I was like okay well

Let me go ahead and continue so if this kind of relates to you please comment below and let me know what your thoughts are or what you have done to uh gone through uh let’s say downsizing if you’re going to uh go ahead and uh have

A second chapter in life uh whether you going to RV for the rest of your life or kind of RV full-time or or move abroad like we are uh what do you do what do you do in this kind of situation so uh again a lot of this stuff is very

Personal to me uh so I continue go ahead and sharing this story with you but in the meanwhile please enjoy this little side trip and look forward to the RV Show uh because as I have mentioned before eventually we want to buy an RV and continue traveling here in Japan so

We can share beautiful sites like this please stay tuned and uh if you like what you see please hit subscribe like and share and uh follow our journey thanks hi folks thanks for tuning in again so uh if uh if you have been following me uh you know that uh not too

Long ago we received a lot of stuff that we had in storage back in the United States they found finally got shipped over here after 6 years of being in storage which leads to me thinking like what do you do to declutter your life folks help me

Out so if you uh have watched some of the previous videos you know that um we purchased this uh vacant house in in Japan AAS or open houses vacant houses or many times even abandoned houses is a common problem and when we bought this house it came with the previous owner’s very

Personal property such as pictures and that type of stuff and so here I am you know stuck with the same problem myself you know gosh you know am I going to leave this to my children or someone else to uh bear the burden to take care

Of it or is it going to stay behind who knows right so again folks if you know how to declutter your life you know kind of give me some tips uh personally some of the things that I need to do they’re like pictures and and things that like

For example that my my my daughter made for a school different school projects um maybe take a nice picture of it and then just um unfortunately get rid of it but there’s other very personal stuff for example this uh this uh Foot Locker right here it’s

Uh looks like trash to some people but for me uh it has a lot of sentimental value the other day I just kind of peeed through it but um these are things that it’s hard for me and my wife you know some of her other things over here and

Down in the garage as well is to to part with or to figure out what to do even though they’re just kind of sitting around for no reason whatsoever right this is the Foot Locker that I had when I was um I deployed to kille dur uh

There was a little conflict back in 1999 and in my GP media tent so some of you Army folks if you know what that is uh let me know they’re next to my C and uh so this is what I where I kept a lot of uh my you know my

Socks and shirts and stuff like that but then eventually it became a like again like what would you call it a war chest or something like that here we are that’s my daughter back when she was uh 5 years old she’s about to go she was in kindergarten about to

Go to first grade and picture from um the folks that I was uh stationed with and deployed to in in Afghanistan and in Germany let’s see what else we have here good old army duffel bag looks like my desert uniform when I was deployed to uh God who knows Iraq Afghanistan Kuwait

One of those three places very worn in I decided to keep one uniform yeah this is yeah so this is the uniform actually that I wore when I was in Afghanistan based on the on based on the unit patch oh this hat um uh obviously as you can tell it got a

Lot of sweat and sand this is probably worn during the the year I spent one year in the between quit in in Iraq during the beginning of the war in uh o if1 after 9911 uh I used to like these old um I still like old classic cars and my my

Wife has bought um a few now this is one dorky hat right here I’m sorry but this bring back some memories the Red Devil so uh I was I was a warrant officer in the Army and uh during 2201 I went to Warren officer candidate school why you at

School you have to you each class is designated a color and we were the red class and then you had to come up with a a a name so we were the Red Devils how how authentic very original right and so everything was red to include your um

Shoelaces if you were that class and they say oh here’s the shirt the red de was Walk You Like a Hurricane sir oh boy you know if y’all only knew the uh the stuff that they put you through you know part of the I a borderline hazing but you know in a way

Is just to um uh to see how bad you want it how bad you know my case like I said I I became a warn officer and then they just put you through let’s say living hell and uh uh and I guess the red de was kind of fitting for that right and

Um so yeah they just kind of tried to break you down see if you’re going to make it uh when we were getting ready to leave uh Germany in 2007 to my follow on assignment to uh for Brag North Carolina the house was empty and my daughter

Wrote this lovely note that she was very very bored in the in the little town of ilison was a really great uh place that we lived in my wife my wife and kids made for me this says welcome home Daddy when I came back after the yearlong

Deployment during U um again during uh o1 this was a stupid little joke that I had on my on my desk and so so War officer is basically someone that you’ve been in for a while and then you you supposed to have a lot of experience it’s supposed to be the technical expert

Right quick little joke right there and basically warn officer right here saying uh yeah watch this and uh basically you watch this how I get this done some other things the four most dangerous things in the US Army same thing the war officer saying watch this my

Daughter one day came to the office and uh she wrote me a little note there love you Daddy okay Alpha 556 that was my my number my yeah my number when I went to jump School Airborne school I was a little bit rip when I went to jump

School I was uh like 36 years old 37 so not the youngest youngest guy from Afghanistan yeah and actually this uh uh unfortunately we had four soldiers that um uh they were actually shot down one of my jobs was the I had to recover the personal effect

Of one of the soldiers and it was very sad to go through his stuff and pack up his stuff you know because you know like all of us you know you just left for the day expecting to come back unfortunately not can’t bond Ste paper July 99 so

This is the toilet paper that we would get in the porter potties that you know have like a Mount Fuji size of uh Brown matter yeah these bad boys block blocked the whole lot sand cards Iraq Most Wanted cards yeah so you had uh all the most wanted people they a

Right oh my God this is from from Koso wow oh wow oh wow so yeah so when that when I was in Koso we volunteered to go uh renovate well actually not fix fixed up a school that was damaged because of the war and tore down and everything and uh I I I

Could I I always kind of wanted to go back to that school and just kind of look at it and um see whatever happened with it but I just could not remember the name I totally forgot I had this WOW let me let me read it real quick on

The behalf of the school staff the students and their parents uh we are great ful for helping the school and the children with the supplies this show of support was tremendous and also necessary due to the fact of our government nor normality uh distribute supplies which are now lacking for several

Years a special thanks for the children adults soldiers and their families from America for giving us these gifts of Aid this Aid is just the beginning of Mutual friendship and cooperation and then the there it is wow the miras miras schools Village wow I am going to go back there folks I’ve always

I’ve always wanted to go back to Koso and one was to kind try to find uh this school I totally forgot I had this oh my goodness wow oh and uh there’s the principal and and this kids wow oh yeah there you go I remember this

One I was checking off the days and we we arrived December uh right here it says December 9th going home home but we arrived here it is we arrived 21 December of 02 right before Christmas I remember um just wanting some coffee Christmas day is that’s the day we we

Departed but we we arrived around the 24th or 24th 25th and um my buddy and I all we wanted Dave if you’re watching if you remember all we wanted was uh some coffee and this one guy at the mess hall was kind of being a little uh snobby

Saying oh we’re Clos and I I never forget this guy who supervised like he said man just give them some freaking coffee all they wanted some coffee in this Christmas all right folks so um yeah thanks for this was totally unplanned I was just bringing some stuff up and uh I

Was going through this so said let me go ahead and uh uh go go through this box together um they again but it’s part of the um I guess the Dilemma you know what do you do with this type of stuff that only I or my wife or kids may

Know the history behind it after that it’s just garbage to people and uh you know again when uh you go through yeah go through your personal belongings you what do you do um sorry I lost of words so all right folks again if you like what you see please hit

Subscribe like and share and continue following the journey here in the or Japan as we travel around Japan Asia and live here in the countryside and uh all right thanks again take care bye

How do you declutter very personal belongings? We are sorting our personal belonging in the rural side of Japan after we renovated our Vacant Japanese House (Akiya). We are on our way to the Japan Camping Car Show 2024. Stay tuned!

I am an American (of Mexican descent) living and working in Japan. My wife of 32 (plus) years is from Japan. We bought a vacant or empty house “Akiya” in the countryside of Japan near Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture for $35,000 (5 million Yen as of August 2022). The property consists of a 2-story house built in 1975, small guest house, large 2 car garage, storage building, and 3/4 acres of land with many fruit trees.

As very common when purchasing an Akiya in Japan, the personal belongings of the previous owner were still in the house. It took multiple trips to the local recycle center to dispose of all the property.

The grounds were overgrown with many weeds and vines. This will take a while to get under control, but it is looking much better around the property, and I think the neighbors are happy to see us cleaning up.

This traditional Japanese house also features a gorgeous Japanese Garden in much need of cleaning up and bringing it back to its glory. I am still working on the garden, but it already looks stunning under a beautiful maple tree and huge decorative stones.

We performed an extensive renovation in the entire house. We focused on keeping traditional Japanese features such as the engawa, shoji doors, ranma, shikkui, tatami room, but incorporated modern features making a very comfortable house for years to come. Walls, ceilings, floors were insulated. New modern kitchen, toilets and bathroom units were installed. We installed a wood burning cast iron stove (Quadra-Fire, Explorer II). New electrical throughout the entire house and guest house. Double pane windows and doors installed and much more.

  1. We are downsizing and decluttering …I was left both my parents belongings and it was agonizing getting rid of stuff, So we are determined to not leave our children a large amount of clutter to sift through.

  2. Bro you can't throw out Uncle Sams tactical toilet paper! Somebody risked their life choppering that into the war zone so you guys could enjoy the sandpapery goodness!

  3. It is hard to get rid of memories that you have collected. Some of it you can still keep an use like maybe the old uniform or red t shirt (if they fit) lol. There is a lady on a popular platform that talks about this same exact stuff. One thing that she says is REMEMBER those are your memories not your childrens. Does your daughter want them? Its a hard reality. Take your time an go thru the stuff no rush in throwing things out but going thru them is a lot of fun an lots of memories that can live in your heart an maybe not in your home.

  4. When I PCSd to Japan 9 years ago, I was newly divorced, and brought everything with me. I didn’t store it because it would be shipped back after my tour. I ended up getting married and retiring in Japan, but now we have stuff I haven’t used in ages. I’m struggling with trying to sell many of the items, but the market for many of the items is limited. I don’t have children to hand down to. My trunk of memories was emptied and we burnt most of it. The trunks were sold to a second hand shop. My more important things were kept, and pictures have been scanned and put on a hard drive.
Fancy dishes, silver, carpets and art are much hard to rehome!

  5. I've always believed that the only good thing about moving is that it gives you a good reason & incentive to go through your belongings & get rid of stuff (especially if you're paying to move everything yourself). I had to clean out a 3800 Sq Ft (350 Sq M) home in Virginia after our five kids all left home & I was relocating to the West Coast. I either gave away, sold or trashed most belongings until I only had a small U-Haul truck size load left to move. Even then, I've slowly been going thru the remainder of my stuff to get rid of unneeded stuff. It's hard to let go of memories sometimes. I look forward to a video from the RV show.

  6. I’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A horrible tornado ripped through Alabama in 2011. Many family members and friends lost everything. After that, I scanned all of my old photos. You could get someone to make you a quilt with your old uniforms or T-shirts with sentimental value.
