【京都観光】泉涌寺（せんにゅうじ）皇室菩提寺｜Sennyuji Temple, Kyoto Higashiyama
Sennyu-ji is located in Higashiyama ward of Kyoto. 15 minutes walk from Kyoto City Bus “Sennyuji-michi” bus stop It’s all uphill, so I recommend taking a taxi on snow days. Sennyu-ji Temple is the head temple of the Sennyu-ji sect of the Shingon Buddhism.
It is called MITERA because it was hereditary temple of Japanese imperial family temple. During the Kamakura period, the retired Emperor Gotoba and Juntoku received religious precepts and because the funeral of Emperor Shijo was held at Sennyuji、 It is said to have been supported by the imperial family. Taxis and private cars can go through the somon gate. Map of Sennyuji and sub-temples The Senzan seven gods pilgrimage is an annual famous event on the second sunday of January. I recommend visiting Sennyu-ji Temple first, which is located at the highest point, and then visiting sub-temple on the way back.
Sokujo-in Temple: Amida Nyorai statue and 25 bodhisattvas statue, all are important cultural property of Japan. Unryuin temple: famous for sutra copying, a beautiful garden, and Daikokuten statue. Raigo-in Temple is famous for Japan’s first Three Treasures Kojinson and Oishi Kuranosuke’s tea room.
Imakumano Kannonji Temple is famous for simplified Shikoku pilgrimage. Kaikoji Temple has big Shaka Nyorai Statue whichi is made by very famous sculptor Unkei and Tankei. There are many things to see at the sub-temple of Sennyu-ji Temple. Both the fresh greenery in summer and the autumn leaves are beautiful.
Daimon gate – Important Cultural Property Admission is 500 yen. The high priests of Sennyu-ji Temple had studied in the Song Dynasty of China, A statue of Kannon, said to be made to resemble Yang Guifei of Emperor Xuanzong of China, is enshrined in this hall.
Many temple treasures are displayed in the treasure hall, Shinsho-den. Mitsufumi Tosa’s “The Tale of Genji folding screen,” which became the iconic poster for “oh yeah! I shoud go to Kyoto“ campaine in winter 2024, can be seen at Shinshoden. Photography is prohibited inside buildings at Sennyu-ji.

We can see inside through the wire mesh on the door. There is a reliquary hall at the back of the Buddhist hall. The reliquary hall is normally closed to the public, but on this day it was open to the public during a special period.
This building was relocated from the Imperial Palace during the Edo period. Dragon is painted on the ceiling by Sanraku Kano. It is called roaring dragon because the sound echoes when you clap your hands in a specific place under the painting. Japan’s oldest statue of Idaten is enshrined next to the Buddha’s relics.
Reimeiden The memorial tablets of emperors are enshrined here. It is said that the Buddhist altar articles used at Reimeiden were donated by the imperial family. There is a path that leads to Tsukinowanomisasagi. There are many Imperial mausoleums in Kyoto. There are a particularly many mausoleums around Sennyu-ji Temple.
Many emperors and other members of the imperial family mausoleum are here. Imperial Messengers’ Gate (Chokushimon) There is the temple office behind this gate. Reimeiden Gozasho Admisson for Gozasho and garden is 500 YEN I entered the garden. The hall with white wall is Kaiedo.
Buddhist statue which kept close at hand for personal worship by successive emperors and empresses are enshrined here. There is a map of the sub-temples next to the main gate, so you can check about where to go next.
